What do you order at an Indian Restaurant?

I’m going to an Indian restaurant next week and ALWAYS order a biriyani or tikka masala.

Please give me some different suggestions by telling me what YOU order?

I like a LITTLE bit of spice, but not lots!

Chicken korma. So I guess I’m no good to you. Enjoy your meal!

JaninesEyePatch · 12/09/2021 21:43

Bhuna? I usually get a biryani too though.

Comedycook · 12/09/2021 21:44

Half a tandoori chicken

Saag paneer. Indian cheese in a spinach gravy. Sounds gross but it's sensational

PinkFootstool · 12/09/2021 21:44

Tarka dahl as a side dish
Have a look at the chef's specials and just pick something out of the norm for you - decide not to have anything you recognise as a staple British Indian dish!

weaselwords · 12/09/2021 21:44

I’m a brummie, so it’s gotta be a balti for me!

StaceysmomandIhavegotitgoinon · 12/09/2021 21:45

Lamb rogan josh or dopiaza.

emmetgirl · 12/09/2021 21:47

A jalfrezi every time and sag aloo

magimedi · 12/09/2021 21:47

Bombay duck - how I wish...............

Bookaholic73 · 12/09/2021 21:47

@StaceysmomandIhavegotitgoinon what is a Dopiaza?

@PinkFootstool I always worry that whatever I’d order would be too spicy. But I also want to try something new.

I like a madras, but generally I never order the same thing twice. I struggle with meat at an Indian restaurant as I'm not keen on lamb, will eat chicken at a push. Most Indian dishes are great without meat anyway, prawns are usually disappointing.

Bombay duck - how I wish...............
That sounds amazing!

Chicken korma, rice, naan bread, popodom, mango chutney.

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 12/09/2021 21:48

Agree with looking at the chefs specials, the best curries tend to be in there. Chicken Habigonj or King Prawn Shootki is what I usually order from our local. Mushroom rice and peshwari naan!

Ninkanink · 12/09/2021 21:48

Whatever I most fancy at the time! But for the purposes of this thread I’ll say:

A mixed tandoori grill, or a tandoori chicken leg
Dal tadka
Brinjal bhaji
Roti

Plus one dish I’ve not tried before (if there is one on the menu).

OhDearShirley · 12/09/2021 21:49

Vindaloo (might be a bit too spicy)
Saag paneer, agree with a pp, it's amazing.
The kids have chana masala and tarka daal both lovely and I pinch a bit.

Vaselike · 12/09/2021 21:49

Saag paneer, tarkha dahl, prawn puri as a starter.

2pinkginsplease · 12/09/2021 21:49

Chicken chasni, I love the taste, it’s a sweet and creamy tomato sauce.

ZenNudist · 12/09/2021 21:49

Butter chicken
Chicken karahi
Lamb bhuna
Lamb dopiaza

All mild enough

Also bombay potatoes

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 12/09/2021 21:50

I like paneer shashlik, but you could also have chicken/prawn although paneer is better . It's grilled with vegetables and a spice mix. I also like saag aloo.

MaudebeGonne · 12/09/2021 21:50

I like a lamb saag - lamb in a spinach sauce. It is really fragrant and fresh, and it isn't over spicy.

StaceysmomandIhavegotitgoinon · 12/09/2021 21:50

Its a mild curry with onions and meat. Really delicious. Definitely try it :)

ContadoraExplorer · 12/09/2021 21:51

If they have it, chilli garlic chicken. If not, something else with a tomato base (not into creamy curries) and a bit If a kick (but not as hot as a vindaloo)

TheHouseIsOnFire · 12/09/2021 21:52

Something creamy like a chicken tikka masala but maybe a posher version like passanda (or murgh makhani which is pretty much the same thing as CTM anyway!) then a lamb dish like lamb methi (not hot at all, just nice rich gravy sauce), pilau rice and something vegetable-y like sag aloo, or niramish. Then peshwari naan - yum!! And onion bhajees to start. And some poppadoms of course Grin

countdowntonap · 12/09/2021 21:52

I like to order off the chef specials menu as it usually showcases cooking from their hometown. Last week we ordered a shorisha and a South Indian curry. Both with a bit of a kick.
If you want to try something hotter than you usually have, ask to have extra spinach or mushroom in your dish; I find that this balances out the heat.
