What do you order at an Indian Restaurant?

I’m going to an Indian restaurant next week and ALWAYS order a biriyani or tikka masala.

Please give me some different suggestions by telling me what YOU order?

I like a LITTLE bit of spice, but not lots!

Karahi paneer 😋

Bringmemoonshine · 12/09/2021 23:34

@magimedi

Bombay duck - how I wish...............
@magimedi Aah, how I miss it! I would so love one (…or a dozen…) now.
RomComPhooey · 12/09/2021 23:39

Chicken gurkha masala, mushroom rice and share a side order of tarka dhal with my family and a corner of a shared naan.

Fish karahi is my curry of choice at the moment
Chicken pasanda or makhani are a creamy step up spice wise from korma.
Love a peshwari naan but usually have a couple of roti’s.
And to start with ALL the starters and 2 foot of poppadoms and pickles.

notapizzaeater · 12/09/2021 23:45

Chicken or prawn chaat to start, then lamb rogan Josh with a peshwari nan.

If you like the sweetness / mild korma try a 'butter' dish or a 'makhani' dish, neither is hot,

Antsinyourpanta · 12/09/2021 23:46

Slow cooked Sri lankan lamb
Sag paneer
Brinjal bhagee (sp)

Unfashionable · 12/09/2021 23:47

I’m not a veggie, but I love Gujarati vegetarian food, and usually order a thali with poori as the bread. If I’m not having a thali I love panipuri as a starter followed by a masala dosa. Chilli paneer is also a big favourite of mine.

Boysofsummerhavegone · 12/09/2021 23:54

Aloo chaat, lamb dopiaza or prawn methi, boiled rice, raita. Sag paneer sometimes.

beautifullymad · 13/09/2021 00:02

Chicken rezala with saag paneer and Bombay potato. And peshwari nann. Yummy.

Hm2020 · 13/09/2021 00:04

Poppadoms
Tandoori lamb chops
Saag paneer
prawn purée
Lamb passander
Sometimes a madras
Mushroom rice

Maduixa · 13/09/2021 00:13

Paneer shashlik tandoori

MouseholeCat · 13/09/2021 00:34

Pappadoms
Palak or saag paneer
Lamb passanda
Pilau rice
Peshwari naan

If it's a southern indian restaurant I do love a dosa though!

BadLad · 13/09/2021 00:34

A chicken vindaloo. Which I always regret when I start eating it, and I have to take gigantic gulps of water between tiny mouthfuls. But it seems like a good idea at the time.

Also tandoori chicken, naan and a couple of poppadoms with lime pickle.

NortieTortie · 13/09/2021 00:43

Veg bhuna, rice, naan. 😋

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 13/09/2021 00:46

I agree with chicken/prawn shashlik if you want to try something different

IncyWincyGrownUp · 13/09/2021 01:27

I haven’t been to an Indian restaurant for about fifteen years :(

When we used to go as students, I’d just ask the waiter to suggest something tasty that was medium-ish with no egg involved. Would never remember the names of things, but had some good food. Wouldn’t bother with rice, always got chapatti and naan to share.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/09/2021 02:37

If they do potato bhaji or aloo tikki, which is like a spicy potato cake, I'll have that.

There's a popular local chain that serves aloo tikki with a small portion of chana masala and salad as a starter and I often have that. Or another Indian Street food place that does this as a vada pav, which is the potato cake in a brioche with chutney.

I often get a vegetable thali as it saves me the bother of having to choose which I usually can't from a large menu.

Or something like masala dosa, which usually comes with some thin dhal or prawns and salad or in a pancake.

If you don't like things too spicy they can often make things milder if you ask.

Ugzbugz · 13/09/2021 02:51

Paneer masala

Pikamoo · 13/09/2021 05:32

Something mild! I don't go out for Indian often tbh as I prefer the curries that I make at home. If that's where we're going though I'd go for daal, korma, butter chicken, something like that.

Mutton varaval is amazing though (not sure I spelled it correctly), it's double cooked mutton that's deep fried so it's crispy and omg it's so good. Hmm just looked it up and that doesn't look like the dish I am describing!

miltonj · 13/09/2021 05:41

Regaza
Makhan
Passanda
Butter chicken.

These are all creamy and mild - regaza a bit more of a kick. I like hotter ones too but usually just have a bit of what husband orders.

Garlic or peshwari naan or paratha if they have it.

Love a prawn puri, bit struggle to eat my main of I do that, so often times, popadoms and pickles and maybe a samosa.

custardbear · 13/09/2021 05:53

Passanda is a nice mild curry if you like a creamy base

I like chef specials or if bog standard choices I like madras, karahi, masala

NessieMcNessface · 13/09/2021 05:57

Chicken or lamb tikka, side of vegetable curry (niramish), naan bread, Kingfisher beer. This might be a bit too dry for many people, but I don’t like rich sauces as I can’t take too much fat so this is perfect.

SpeakingFranglais · 13/09/2021 06:07

Popadoms with dips
Jhinga Khas (spelling may be off but chargrilledtikka king prawns)
Either a chicken Bhuna or a creamy but spiced curry like makhani

Simonjt · 13/09/2021 06:08

What sort of Indian cuisine do they serve, south indian, north indian etc? Or is it Bangladeshi, a lot of Indian restaurants are actually Bangladeshi.

Rajma is quite nice, dilli ki chaat, chole bhature, dahi bhalla all go together quite well.

Bookaholic73 · 13/09/2021 07:19

Wow, thank you for so many yummy suggestions!
I think I’d like the Thali (not sure I’ve spelt that correctly), the small portions of lots of different dishes.

I’ll definitely have the saag aloo, as I make it at home a lot. Or maybe Bombay potatoes instead.

Lots of people recommending the paneer dish. Fried cheese sounds horrendous, but is it the kind of thing that sounds terrible but actually sounds delicious?

I love kind prawns, chicken or beef, but not keen on lamb/mutton.

Thanks for your suggestions!
