What do you order at an Indian Restaurant?

I’m going to an Indian restaurant next week and ALWAYS order a biriyani or tikka masala.

Please give me some different suggestions by telling me what YOU order?

I like a LITTLE bit of spice, but not lots!

Saag paneer, dhal (red lentil is tarka, black is makhani), lemon coconut rice, Peshawari naan, onion bhaji, vegetable samosa, puri.

Terracedtardis · 12/09/2021 22:38

Saag Paneer and Dahl Makhani.

Saag paneer or tikka paneer, tarka dhal, and usually chicken or king prawn dish (balti / bhuna etc)

Korai is lovely if you like peppers.

Morporkia · 12/09/2021 22:47

I usually have a vindaloo but last time I went for a curry I ordered the chilli garlic chicken.. absolutely gorgeous, about the same heat level as a madras, so might be a good option for you?

earsup · 12/09/2021 22:47

Chicken or lamb madras or vindaloo and saag aloo
dad used to cook hot curry for us since childhood so has to be hot and spicey for me...

justjuggling · 12/09/2021 22:50

Chicken dhansak, garlic naan, Bombay potatoes. Perfect!

NanooCov · 12/09/2021 22:52

Our regular takeaway order is:

King prawn puree
Lamb samosas
Pilau rice
Lamb korma (for me)
Chicken madras (for DH)
Sag aloo
Poppadoms
Naan bread

The restaurant always supplies a little tub of mango chutney, one of raita and another of some kind of slightly pickled red onion and cucumber mix.

I also like bhuna, dopiaza, makhani. Our local takeaway is Nepalese so they do some lovely other stuff that I had never tried before.

noblegreenk · 12/09/2021 22:52

Dhansak is my favourite.

InnPain · 12/09/2021 22:55

@Bookaholic73 I’d advise you to go with a seekh kebab with naan bread and some salad on the side and even chips if you fancy, exquisite meal.

bumblingbovine49 · 12/09/2021 22:58

Different things sometimes but my go to , when I can't decide is usually

chicken dhansak with rice and a veg dish on the side . Favourites are Alo Gobi, sag paneer or Brinjal Bhaji

waltzingparrot · 12/09/2021 22:58

I always look at chef specials ,- there's usually one that has some of the following and is a milder dish..... Coconut, honey, mango, almond.

I always order the same thing, poppodoms with all the dips to start, chicken tikka korma, 1/2 pilau rice, 1/2 chips, onion bhajis (alongside my main) with a garlic naan.

Our local restaurant is amazing and a total hidden gem. It sits in a row of dodgy looking shops and seems like it’s just a takeaway, but once inside it’s a beautifully set out modern restaurant where the staff are lovely and the food is to die for.

crumpet · 12/09/2021 23:19

Thali every time. Either meat or vegetarian. It’s a variety of different curries, in smaller portions, so lots of different flavours. Not all places have it on the menu but I jump at it when it is.

BigMamaFratelli · 12/09/2021 23:25

Either chicken balti or jalfrezi, tarka dahl, saag aloo and a peshwari naan.

If you don't like it very hot I'd recommend either butter chicken or lamb pasanda.

I'm going to have to cook a curry tomorrow night now!!!

ForgedInFire · 12/09/2021 23:25

I get a madras and I keep the mint yogurt from the poppadoms to cool down the spice level if needed. Or order one separately. Although you can probably ask the chef to make it mild, I always feel too shy to do that.

Sittingonabench · 12/09/2021 23:26

Chicken chaat is usually quite reliable and Parthia. I like a chicken makhani from my local but everywhere else makes it totally different and far too sweet.

ForgedInFire · 12/09/2021 23:26

Dopiaza is lovely if you like onions

IVFdreams2021 · 12/09/2021 23:27

Always a korma.
