Which food trends are you tired of?

Sriracha on everything. Enough already.

I don't understand this trend for putting biscuits on cakes, in brownies and in chocolate. I could understand it a bit more if it's incorporated into the brownie but often it's just stuck on top.

Burgers that require you to dislocate your jaw in the manner of a python, in order to eat them. I don't have a delicate appetite. I like a good sized burger but some are so ridiculously huge and have so many toppings that you practically need a forklift to get it to your mouth.

What food trends don't you understand?

@CarrotSticks23

I fully agree with the cakes with biscuits on top

Any over the top deserts covered in various biscuits, sweets, chocolate sauce. Freak shakes, cakes covered in biscuits/sweets, ice creams that are covered in masses of shit. Cakes that's are covered in royal icing so they can look nice but are not tasty. Too much and means I can never have a desert.

Most of the things on here I am okay with though

I got slated on here once for asking why the sudden trend for grown adults to rave over children's party type food. Everything with squirty cream, sprinkles, unicorn wafers, sickly, sickly, sickly shit, just a big sweet fatty over the top pile of mess on a plate. People were VERY defensive in their responses.

Don't get me wrong, I like sweet fatty mess on a plate, if it's something like an Eton Mess, a cheesecake (with a small garnish of a couple of raspberries), a chocolate fondant type of dessert, a good old crumble or pie with ice cream or custard. But I can't understand the over the top "more is better -pile it on" way of thinking. It seems to be purely that they can put it on instagram and show people what an indulgent treat they are giving themselves. No-one can seriously like that mushy mix of children's toppings.....

@TomRipley

I went to a Cote brassiere yesterday. It's been a while but they used to do some lovely vegetarian food with French cheeses. For example, the Roquefort and walnut salad Halo Not anymore. It's meat, fish or vegan.

I had the cheeseboard (large) as a main 👍🏼

Sadly Roquefort is made with animal rennet like Parmesan so isn't vegetarian.

It used to be one of my favourite cheeses too.

I also hate all the poor quality vegan restaurant options too. Maybe it's time for us veggies to fight back and start complaining about the horrible tasting fake cheese etc. I shall certainly start saying something in the future but we rarely eat out.

Barney60 · 12/09/2021 19:13

I cant stand pretend meat, im veggie always have been why would i want pretend meat with similar texture taste, just eat the real meat.

Brioche buns for burgers 🤮🤮🤮

Plummer88 · 12/09/2021 19:14

Chips in a bucket/separate container. First thing you do is tip them on to the plate anyway.

@sylv165

I've just read the full thread and don't think I have ever been more shocked. I LOVE salted caramel. I am also partial to halloumi, sourdough and avocado, and wouldn't say no to my burger coming in a sneaky wee brioche bun. Is there something wrong with me?!!
I don't think so! Out of those, I'd say:

Halloumi - love
Sourdough - not all the time, but nice
Avocado - as above
Brioche - I just wish pain de mie / shokupan would get trendy, cos I prefer those Wink

Killeditwithkisses · 12/09/2021 19:16

Sourdough bread 🤢 its everywhere and doesn't seem to be moving on. ...it can get in the bin!

Doubleraspberry · 12/09/2021 19:17

To be fair, I’ve gone from being someone who checked out the puddings on a menu first and spent the whole meal secretly waiting for dessert to someone who now just has coffee, so it’s been great for my health.

Longdistance · 12/09/2021 19:18

Deconstructed bollocks aka chef couldn’t be bothered to cobble it together.

CaMePlaitPas · 12/09/2021 19:19

Cakes made with fondant icing and people falling over themselves because it's "so good". It doesn't taste of anything!

Bubble tea
Oh my gosh yes! My dd saw it on a kpop video and begged for it, we all went out for bubble tea and I honestly can’t believe anyone likes it. DS8 asked repeatedly whether he could eat the bubbles, we didn’t know so just said no, and to top it off they seemed expensive for what they were.

@smallandimperfectlyformed

Red velvet. I hate that, it just tastes artificial to me. I am vegetarian and glad that vegans now get more options on the menu but a bit fed up of the fact that so many places now only offer a vegan alternative to the meat dish, especially as some of the things are not particularly tasty and remind me of when I first became vegetarian over 25 years ago.
Totally agree. I miss creamy, cheesy veggie food. I went to The Grove (fancy five star job) and was served a cauliflower head. There was cumin or something on it but otherwise just a dry cauliflower head. Perfectly cooked but tasteless and left me starving.
Housewife2010 · 12/09/2021 19:24

The current obsession for Biscoff Lotus biscuits. They used to be the little biscuit that sometimes came with your cup of coffee or tea in a cafe. Small, nice and not particularly exciting. Now Lotus biscuits and their matching sickly oily spread seem to be everywhere. There's so many recipes using them too.

FourteenSixteenTwentyTwo · 12/09/2021 19:25

Overpriced burgers. I love a burger but why do they cost £12 without sides and all have a ridiculous amount of toppings. Where’s the simple cheese burger and relish gone? Yes to brioche buns too - they just melt away with the sauce.

Gin - asking for a gin and tonic and I’m presented with a gin list longer than the food menu with half of them being weird fruity drinks.

Bunnyfuller · 12/09/2021 19:26

All the fucking ridiculous coffees. Never been a fan and never will. Your basics from Italy/Turkey then fuck off

DominicRaabsTravelAgent · 12/09/2021 19:26

Fresh fruit salads - missing in action, you never see these served as desserts any more (trying to be health conscious when going out)

You want to try asking if they have a dairy free dessert. 99 times out of a 100 they look panicked then come back and offer you a fruit salad.

Gardenerboo · 12/09/2021 19:26

@smallandimperfectlyformed YES! I totally agree. I’ve started to notice this and I want cheese. I know there’s vegan cheese but it’s not the same.

I don't like tapioca as a dessert, so why would I want it in my tea?

sueelleker · 12/09/2021 19:27

Bold fail!

FourteenSixteenTwentyTwo · 12/09/2021 19:28

And yes to vegetarian food. I’m a meat eater but 3/4s of the time would opt for vegetarian - but my favourite breakfast/brunch restaurant has swapped the veggie option for vegan, removed my eggs and replaced with fucking veggie sausages.

DominicRaabsTravelAgent · 12/09/2021 19:29

Afternoon Tea.

No, I don't want to spend £25 on two cucumber sandwiches and some sickly sweet cake 🤮

NotAnotherPylon · 12/09/2021 19:29

@PatchworkElmer Well no, of course he shouldn't be catered for above those who eat a vegan diet, trendy or otherwise (I didn't say that, but hey ho I'll bite), but it'd be nice not to be lumped in with them just because he shares the dietary preference of not eating meat. It'd also be nice, I reckon, if there were a couple of vegetarian options in addition to the vegan options, which are often a load of processed shite, although I realise this depends on the restaurant/food outlet.

Oh and maybe look up irony in the dictionary ...

YouJustFoldItIn · 12/09/2021 19:30

I'm with you on the skyscraper burgers. I take them apart and eat them with a knife and fork. I can't be doing with anything that is too complicated or messy to eat.

For the same reason I have no time for things like mille feuille custard slice type things. The top and bottom are crispy and brittle but the middle is really squishy. As soon as you push your fork into the pastry the whole thing collapses into an awkward mess and it's really hard to get anything onto your fork and up to your mouth without it landing in your lap.

Prawns I love and I am happy to peel and eat them with my fingers but not if they are swimming in a liquidy sauce or a curry. Why would you want to hoik a whole prawn in its shell with head and tail attached out of a pile of runny curry sauce and have to peel it before you can eat it? Hmm

Kimchi is overrated. I like it, but not on/in everything.

Cupcakes. All style and no substance.

Themes cakes that have far too too much lurid-coloured fondant icing on them, modelled to look like other things. Very clever, but rubbish to eat. A cake should be great to eat first, and creative to look at second. Four inches of bright red or blue sickly sweet, flavourless fondant icing in the shape of a piano or a teddy bear on a slab of dry sponge is not my idea of a delicious cake. You may as well take up plasticine modelling.
