Which food trends are you tired of?

Sriracha on everything. Enough already.

I don't understand this trend for putting biscuits on cakes, in brownies and in chocolate. I could understand it a bit more if it's incorporated into the brownie but often it's just stuck on top.

Burgers that require you to dislocate your jaw in the manner of a python, in order to eat them. I don't have a delicate appetite. I like a good sized burger but some are so ridiculously huge and have so many toppings that you practically need a forklift to get it to your mouth.

What food trends don't you understand?

Oh and the fad for grazing tables, also for intragram where it must look as indulgent as possible abd must all be stale.

reprehensibleme · 12/09/2021 18:46

For those mourning the lack of plates, I give you the inimitable John Finnemore

Any cake which has the contents of a box of chocolates embedded in the icing, overloaded icing on anything - I want to taste the actual cake.

RosesAndHellebores · 12/09/2021 18:48

Taking pictures of whatever it is.

KitKat1985 · 12/09/2021 18:48

Another vegetarian here who has nothing against veganism at all, but feeling a bit miffed that it's getting harder and harder to get any veggie cheese or egg dishes now as pretty much every place has a vegan alternative on their main menu rather than a veggie one.

Also putting wasabi and chilli on everything - it tastes vile for christ sake.

And restaurants increasingly sneaking service charges onto the bill. It's always something steep like 15% as well (outside of being in the USA I don't believe anyone normally routinely tips in the double figures). I do tip but I prefer it to be at my discretion and a reflection of the service received rather than automatically added to the bill. For example I ate lunch with a friend the other day and had a 15% service charge added to the bill. The service had been pretty poor - had to ask for the bill 3 times and wait over 30 minutes for it. I wouldn't have therefore chosen to tip 15%.

@BluebellsGreenbells

Can we talk chocolate bars?

Salted caramel aero
Mint kitkats

Anything that has had a ‘new flavor’ quickly seems to disappear!

Just why bother?

There seem to be orange this abs mint that all over the supermarket at the moment. Nooooooooooooooooo! (Cadbury it's you im talking about )

bananabuddy3 · 12/09/2021 18:49

Deconstructed anything

Pies that turn out to be a bowl with a little meat and gravy and a tiny circle of detracted pastry. If I want a pie, I want a pie!

Masterchef style sauce - ie just a little line of it or a few carefully placed drops. It’s not enough.

HoneyDragon · 12/09/2021 18:51

Shitting salted cunting caramel, ruining chocolate, puddings, and anything else that stays still long enough to doused in the wretched stuff.

Williamshatnershorses · 12/09/2021 18:52

Salted caramel everything
Loaded fries (= soggy chips)
Milkshakes that have biscuits/cakes/the kitchen sink on top of them

NotAnotherPylon · 12/09/2021 18:52

@PatchworkElmer I know veganism has been around for a long time. A sizeable proportion of my friends and family have eaten a vegan diet for many years. It doesn't mean it can't be a trend like anything else. I'm pretty sure the vegans I know aren't particularly interested in plastic sausages and cheese and burgers with similar properties to roofspace insulation. They are competent cooks and will still be eating a vegan diet long after many of the current bandwagonners are back to chowing down on bacon sandwiches.

PersonaNonGarter · 12/09/2021 18:54

‘Plant-based’

Actually, everything on the planet is fucking CHEMICAL BASED you utter dicks

missingeu · 12/09/2021 18:57

skin on chips - peel the potato, please.

Redsquirrel5 · 12/09/2021 19:01

Pea shoots!

I went out today for a Roast Dinner with friends.
Roast beef.
Roast potatoes,
Mashed potatoes.
Yorkshire Pudding.
Gravy.
Pea shoots.

Pot of
Carrots.
Cabbage.

It doesn’t make it look any better, it doesn’t make it taste better. STOP!

To the Free from people... I have Dairy Free I don’t want to eat Gluten Free I find it taste less.

I don’t eat it and never did - Squirting Cream horrible, tasteless and artificial. Yuk!

OP good question.😁

Cactu · 12/09/2021 19:01

Gluten free and vegan cakes.

They look tempting but will taste bad. GF cakes are ok if you can’t eat gluten as you probably forget what normal cake tastes like but no one wants to eat margarine ‘butter’ cream. Many places only sell these shit cakes now.

I wasn't meaning to diss vegans at all, and I actually love loads of naturally-vegan foods like tofu stir-fry, chili with mix beans, coconut curries, shepherd's pie with lentils, that kind of thing. But all this fake meat for the faddy vegans, which replaces the real veggie and vegan options! I bet it's not even good for the planet, how much water and so on must be used to produce it...?

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 12/09/2021 19:01

'Small plates' that cost as much as big plates but you're expected to order 3-4 per person to share. Usually in a place where the tables aren't really big enough to accommodate the suggested 7-8 small plates you order for two of you, and then the plate can't be shared easily as the portions are so small that you end up with a slice of tomato and half a lobster claw each.

LoveFall · 12/09/2021 19:04

I am sick and tired of the gluten is poison trend. No it's not. It is just a protein found in many grains. It helps make delicious bread by helping it to rise.

It is an issue for coeliacs, for sure. But not something evil.

In fact, many so called healthier foods that are gluten free contain far more fat and sugar.

I cannot stand the holier than though attitude of some people who love to broadcast their gluten free status.

IMO, it can be done decently without eggs or without dairy, but not without both. Where I grew up was a very Jewish area and there was a lot of parev bakery (no dairy) and mostly it was very good.
Kanaloa · 12/09/2021 19:07

Totally agree with places who say they are inclusive because of one dish. So they’ll have 15 meat based dishes then one vegetarian/vegan/gluten free dish that’s supposed to suit anyone with dietary needs or preferences. I wouldn’t mind but if a place advertises vegetarian options I’d expect actually thought out dishes rather than a token meal. It would also be good if it didn’t have goats cheese on it.

Trixabellecrowther · 12/09/2021 19:07

@Shelddd

Yeah I agree the vegan push is a little annoying (but completely understand it)... especially since most of the vegan food offered in restaurants now is basically junk food and completely unhealthy... like what's the point of eating vegan when it's just going to take years off your life anyway from all the nasty additives, and nasty vegetable oils to try and make it taste like artificial meat.

I hope the junk/processed vegan food trend dies.

Most vegans aren't such for health reasons.
Jourdain11 · 12/09/2021 19:09

Also, the whole obsession with protein. Not enough protein, where's the protein, the kids' lunch at school had no protein, etc etc.

As a veggie growing up in France in the noughties, half the time I literally had to eat potatoes and salad, or bread and salad, if we were dining with friends or at a restaurant. I am still alive Wink

PatchworkElmer · 12/09/2021 19:09

But why should your partner be accommodated over ‘trendy’ vegans? Surely you can see the irony of saying that vegan options is a trend whilst you yourselves are asking for another dietary choice…

TweetyPieBird · 12/09/2021 19:10

Oat milk! Choose a different dairy free milk so is coeliacs with lactose intolerance can have a nice latte! I also hate the hype around avocado.

EmKayEm · 12/09/2021 19:11

Toasted sesame seeds.
Deconstructed. If I wanted to make the food myself I would have done it at fucking home.
Flavoured gin.
Infused anything.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 12/09/2021 19:12

Another one for "deconstructed" dishes. You're not Jacques fucking Derrida, mix the ingredients together.

Vegan fake meat etc. There is great veggie and vegan food out there, and it's generally not indicated by the presence of Linda McCartney sausages or Quorn.

sylv165 · 12/09/2021 19:12

I've just read the full thread and don't think I have ever been more shocked. I LOVE salted caramel. I am also partial to halloumi, sourdough and avocado, and wouldn't say no to my burger coming in a sneaky wee brioche bun. Is there something wrong with me?!!
