Which food trends are you tired of?

Sriracha on everything. Enough already.

I don't understand this trend for putting biscuits on cakes, in brownies and in chocolate. I could understand it a bit more if it's incorporated into the brownie but often it's just stuck on top.

Burgers that require you to dislocate your jaw in the manner of a python, in order to eat them. I don't have a delicate appetite. I like a good sized burger but some are so ridiculously huge and have so many toppings that you practically need a forklift to get it to your mouth.

What food trends don't you understand?

*stuff!

@LoveFall

I am sick and tired of the gluten is poison trend. No it's not. It is just a protein found in many grains. It helps make delicious bread by helping it to rise.

It is an issue for coeliacs, for sure. But not something evil.

In fact, many so called healthier foods that are gluten free contain far more fat and sugar.

I cannot stand the holier than though attitude of some people who love to broadcast their gluten free status.

Well, I used to think that myself. But then a couple of years ago I was battling a case of sebhorreic dermatitis on my face (and scalp) and couldn't figure out what was causing it till I tried an anti-inflammatory diet for 5 days or so which was completely gluten-free. It was a revelation. My skin did indeed improve and an additional positive was that the terrible wind (Blush) that I was really struggling with really improved.

I do like loads of stuff with gluten in and it's a pain in the arse to try and do properly gluten free with a family who seem to want to live off pizza and pasta so I do still have it, just a lot less of it. And it has made a difference. The last few days I've given in and had loads of bread (went to a restaurant, plus DH made home made bread for him and the kids and the smell was lovely) nand the result was that today in Tesco I had to run up the next aisle to escape the embarrassment of the stench from my arse. Grin

I would always choose to have bread or pasta in a restaurant if I wanted it because we rarely go out to eat so when I do I want to have what I want, smelly wind or not! And I would never try and make a fuss that I was gluten free in a restaurant because those dishes are for true coeliacs in my eyes, not people like me who just seem to be a bit intolerant of gluten.

TheChosenTwo · 12/09/2021 19:32

Haha my dd2 loves bubble tea, £5.50 for a cup of sugar Grin you can eat the balls! She probably only has one a month but I still wince paying for it.
Any food presented on a board/slate/chips in buckets/baskets, any of that shit. Just chuck it on a plate thanks.
Also dribbles of dressing/sauce. If it’s meant to be there, put it on properly. If it’s not, can I have a clean plate without the smears on it please?
Grazing boards and boxes. I started a whole thread on these so I won’t go on about them again, but just Envy

Claudia84 · 12/09/2021 19:32

@Barney60

I cant stand pretend meat, im veggie always have been why would i want pretend meat with similar texture taste, just eat the real meat.
I’m veggie and I like the taste of meat, so something that is similar in texture/ taste is a good thing. I never understood the argument that vegetarians shouldn’t like the taste of meat!

But I do agree that at times it’s a lazy way of cooking. There are so many naturally vegetarian dishes out there I would love to have an option beyond a fake hotdog/ burger. I’ve had nicer meals before they were everywhere and the chef used to make something up if there wasn’t anything on the menu!

EssentiallyDisorganised · 12/09/2021 19:33

Rainbow and red velvet cakes, too much colouring. Those huge cakes decorated with several packets of biscuits or chocolate bars.

ButYouGottaHaveASkillJeff · 12/09/2021 19:33

The word 'deconstructed' makes me want to do bad things to people.

I once had a bad steak in quite a fancy local hotel. Couldn't get my knife through it for love nor money. I absolutely hate complaining (and I wasn't paying) but on this occasion I had to say something.

I was compensated with an on the house deconstructed cheesecake. Talk about adding insult to injury.

@ThePluckOfTheCoward

I thought I was being common not liking my burger in a sweet shiny brioche bun.. Well if you are, then so are a lot of us on here.
I have found my people!

@IglesiasPiggle

Avocado (just VOM)

Salted caramel (just VOM again!) Even the caramel chocolate in the Milk Tray box is fucking SALTED now! Hmm It's putrid.

Food served (in restaurants,) on pieces of slate.

Kale

Prosecco - overrated fizzy piss

High tea. (just fuck off.)

Veganism. Hmm Sorry, but although a few vegans are fine, there are too many annoying judgy pious ones.

'Pulled' meat. (WTAF?)

Pumpkin spiced latte - it's just latte with cinnamon sprinkled on it

Super-small fucking chocolate bars. (WHY have they shrunk? WHY?)

Supermarkets selling cakes, and packs of chocolate bars, ice creams, and crisps for two £2.00, or 2 for £2.50, but never having low fat food/fruit in the sale.

I LOVE how so many people LOATHE salted caramel. I mean WTF why??? WHY have caramel with salt?

shinynewapple21 · 12/09/2021 19:35

The gourmet junk food trend .

I eat out quite often and would like to be offered food which is nice, a bit special but also healthy .

Agree with others it would be good to see vegan dishes made with real food.

A few restaurants offer mini deserts as a side with coffee and I really like this trend .

IngridTails · 12/09/2021 19:35

@Bunnyfuller

All the fucking ridiculous coffees. Never been a fan and never will. Your basics from Italy/Turkey then fuck off Fappamoccachinopumkinspicedlattebumjuice
Ha! I have found an amazing Turkish cafe near where I love. THE COFFEE 😍

I did go on holiday to Turkey and the hotel was mainly geared towards to British. When I asked for proper Turkish coffee at breakfast they looked surprised.

CamVegOut · 12/09/2021 19:35

Vegan here. Dinner options are either a fake meat burger or a superfood salad. Can we have some veggie/bean burgers please 🤣.

Kanaloa · 12/09/2021 19:37

So you do eat the bubbles 😂 we spent the whole time hissing at DS8 ‘Stop it! If you were supposed to eat the bubbles they would have given you a spoon!’

Lovemusic33 · 12/09/2021 19:38

Salted caramel
Avocado/smashed avocado
Olives 🤮
Sweet potato fries

YouJustFoldItIn · 12/09/2021 19:38

Brioche buns for everything

Yes! for burgers and pulled pork etc - just too sweet!

JustBrowwsing · 12/09/2021 19:38

@TheWayTheLightFalls
You're not Jacques fucking Derrida, mix the ingredients together.

Grin
SunIsBehindGreySky · 12/09/2021 19:39

Peppers or too much spice, I like to taste other things and the complexity of flavours, you may as well just have a red pepper and spice dish and forget qdding anything else. To be fair I am a super taster so maybe the limited taste buds people need these things to acknowledge any flavour.

ChocolateRiver · 12/09/2021 19:40

Brioche with burgers. I find the sweetness weird and the bun just falls apart. I used to love a good burger but it seems like the whole world serves them with a brioche bun now. Burgers have been ruined for me.

Theimpossiblegirl · 12/09/2021 19:40

@Chocolateorangeinhaler
Pulled salmon sandwich? I fell for that one in IKEA a couple of years ago. It was indeed tinned salmon on a bit of bread.

YukoandHiro · 12/09/2021 19:40

Agree with the poor quality vegan. We eat quite a lot of vegan out because my daughters both have egg and dairy allergies - but instead of decent meals most places now have ultra high processed absolute crap

Lobelian · 12/09/2021 19:40

My pet hate is menus that list a dish's ingredients, punctuated with full stops, with no indication of cooking method, proportions, temperature, etc. so you have to guess what'll turn up, usually in an Army mess tin/child's shoe/hub cap.

Eg, CHICKEN. BROTH. GARLIC. NOUGAT. SPAM 18

Pr1mr0se · 12/09/2021 19:41

Gizmo98765 - with you there. Worse if it's a new place and the premises actually look filthy too of course.

TangledTrees · 12/09/2021 19:41

Foams. Gross. Who wants a foam of pigs bollocks with their pork belly?

And off at a slight tangent, pricing without £ signs
Coffee 3
Pizza 9
Burger 8.5
Smoothie 4.5

4.5 what? Pence? Kg?
Pretentious crap

IcedPurple · 12/09/2021 19:43

@WeAreTheHeroes

Restaurants where everything is "small plates" which is an extension of tapas as a full meal, which they never are in Spain.
Yes that whole 'tapas' thing is often an excuse to serve tiny little 'small plates' which are way overpriced for the few bites you get. A friend and I once went to this newly opened 'tapas style' Indian restaurant which was getting rave reviews. Food was nice enough but just so little of it and expensive too. We both raided the fridge when we got home!

Whereas in Spain, as you have said, tapas are meant more as a snack to be eaten with drinks to tide you over until dinner time, not as a full meal in themselves.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 12/09/2021 19:44

I just had to google bubble tea. What the F?! a cup with frogspawn at the bottom....

It's a continental thing. I think they did it when we changed to euros because they didn't know how to draw the euro sign Grin
