Which food trends are you tired of?

Sriracha on everything. Enough already.

I don't understand this trend for putting biscuits on cakes, in brownies and in chocolate. I could understand it a bit more if it's incorporated into the brownie but often it's just stuck on top.

Burgers that require you to dislocate your jaw in the manner of a python, in order to eat them. I don't have a delicate appetite. I like a good sized burger but some are so ridiculously huge and have so many toppings that you practically need a forklift to get it to your mouth.

What food trends don't you understand?

I long for the days when an (admittedly rare) vegan meal in a cafe would have been made primarily of vegetables, beans and/or lentils. Not various unidentifiable mock meats. To be fair, it probably would have been a health food or vegetarian cafe, but they were around.

Also, freak shakes. May as well just go and wait outside A&E now.

coffeepleeease · 12/09/2021 18:31

I disagree with so many of these, I love salted caramel, biscoff, halloumi Grin

For me it's coffee that's more like a dessert - the iced latte with a tonne of syrup in and loads of squirty cream on top! Doesn't even taste like coffee!

Fuzzysock · 12/09/2021 18:32

Biscoff everything!

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 12/09/2021 18:33

Yes but they used to be called Angel Cakes or Butterfly Cakes and we're lovely and delicate. Not with mounds of claggy, brightly coloured butter icing. Cupcakes can go now.

Ohh yes, being back lovely delicate butterfly cakes or iced fairly cakes, delicious.

Xmasbaby11 · 12/09/2021 18:33

I have a sweet tooth but still don't like the biscuits / choc bars on top of cake - it's just sickly and takes the focus away from a nicely baked cake. Often the focus is on the icing and decorations.

I think more traditional, plainer cakes need to make a comeback - fruit cake and swiss rolls. I make these at home and love them. As I say I do have a really sweet tooth but it definitely feels enough to have a piece of plainish cake rather than one with loads of icing and toppings.

I love salted caramel though.

underneaththeash · 12/09/2021 18:33

@DearFatties I know - how dare you, bordering on racist!

melmos · 12/09/2021 18:34

I like most of these things but I wish the fish option in pubs wasn't fried calamari or battered fish. Like I doesn't have to be dover sole a tuna sandwich would do it. Thats probably just me being fussy though!

Babyroobs · 12/09/2021 18:34

Cupcakes where there is more icing than cake, just too much. I end up scraping it off and wasting it. lets be honest it's just to make the cake look good, but wasteful as no-one wants that much icing surely.

MrsMiddleMother · 12/09/2021 18:36

Grazing platters/boards/buffets.
Makes me feel sick just looking at the pictures online

Confusedandshaken · 12/09/2021 18:37

Not a fad as such but v popular with my friends - charcuterie. It just tastes of salt and garlic. I love salt and garlic but I like meat to taste meaty.

EerieSilence · 12/09/2021 18:37

Biscoff spread has been here for ages, it's not a fad.
I love salted caramel, brioche for burgers and pulled pork.
Hate all fake sausages, stews, burgers (it's a fucking mushroom, people) and anything else fake wants to be vegan.
I hate pretentious little bistros where ridiculous replacements for plates and ridiculous combinations mask the fact that the owners can't cook. You'll get all the snobby attitude served with a sub-par food.

Morph2lcfc · 12/09/2021 18:37

@smallandimperfectlyformed

Red velvet. I hate that, it just tastes artificial to me. I am vegetarian and glad that vegans now get more options on the menu but a bit fed up of the fact that so many places now only offer a vegan alternative to the meat dish, especially as some of the things are not particularly tasty and remind me of when I first became vegetarian over 25 years ago.
I’m fed up of the Cavan thing too, lots of the nicest veggie dishes used cheese and vegan cheese is just not same
ThePluckOfTheCoward · 12/09/2021 18:39

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

I might come across as grumpy, but pretty much everything.

Food has turned into a spectator sport and a show of activity. I think it's obscene now, when we are nearing a environmental catastrophe to have all the wasteful cookery programmes and the endless cook books and magazines and to be chasing the newest, most exotic ingredient.

We need to step back and go back to a more utilitarian view on food, I think.

I agree and I think this raises a serious point about how we view and consume food nowadays.
eekbumbler · 12/09/2021 18:40

Nigella anything.

As for having your lunch served on a wooden board, how easy is it to get steak juice out of a wooden board full of scratches before you use it for the next customer?

I thought I was being common not liking my burger in a sweet shiny brioche bun.

gogohm · 12/09/2021 18:40

Not a modern trend but can we have egg free breakfasts please? I'm a meat eater and I love avocados too but I hate eggs, well specifically egg white with a passion, and I've been told twice this week alone (I'm on a road trip holiday up in Scotland) that they couldn't vary the breakfast to not include egg (surely it saves them money!!!)

gogohm · 12/09/2021 18:43

And dd wants more vegetarian not vegan food too. They refused to substitute the (disgusting) vegan cheese for proper cheese last week despite them selling normal burgers with normal cheese.

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 12/09/2021 18:43

I thought I was being common not liking my burger in a sweet shiny brioche bun.. Well if you are, then so are a lot of us on here.

CottonSock · 12/09/2021 18:43

Don't mind sourdough, but hate it when they burn it to a crisp. Tastes like charcoal and can't bite it.

Soggy biscuits topping things totally agree. Just for Instagram

iklboo · 12/09/2021 18:43

Charging ££££ for fishfinger butties
BBQ sauce on everything
Fake meat
'Sourced' - you bought it from a supplier. You didn't trawl the ends of the earth to find some cheese.

My new favourite food is curry buns though. A fantastic lady comes to our monthly pop up market and I would buy out all of her stock if I could.

Doubleraspberry · 12/09/2021 18:44

I only eat homemade cakes now really. So fed up with overly sweet or dry cakes for £4 a slice.

georgarina · 12/09/2021 18:44

Dirty burgers and freakshakes. So disgusting and OTT and not even appetizing, just grease/sugar piled together.

Fateofthecookies · 12/09/2021 18:44

Prosecco & all the slogans that come with it like the Xmas jumper I was given last year ‘Prosecco ho ho’ (fuck off) tastes awful.

ImprobablePuffin · 12/09/2021 18:45

@dotdotdotdash

Yes *@speakout*. Why would you want salt flakes in your chocolate? Ruins it.
Hmm stumbling across a little salt nugget in a biscuit is one of life's great pleasures IMO Grin

I've been vegetarian since I was 10 and I'm pissed off how all the perfectly okay vegetarian options have been replaced by fake-meat vegan stuff, for the 5-minute vegans or people who "identify" as vegan and still want to eat meat. I don't want to eat a "chick'n", "it's not tuna", "vegan ham and cheeze" baguette; just give me cheese, egg, mozzarella, falafel, houmous and roasted veg, whatever. Some of those are also vegan, btw ;)

Um, freakshakes. They are properly freaky. I have a sweet tooth and the sight of them still makes me a little queasy.

I did like salted caramel but yeah, slightly over it now!

jay55 · 12/09/2021 18:46

Menu sections called 'Instagramable ' with a whacking great price on something normal like a latte or pancake because it has a flower on top.
