Which food trends are you tired of?

Sriracha on everything. Enough already.

I don't understand this trend for putting biscuits on cakes, in brownies and in chocolate. I could understand it a bit more if it's incorporated into the brownie but often it's just stuck on top.

Burgers that require you to dislocate your jaw in the manner of a python, in order to eat them. I don't have a delicate appetite. I like a good sized burger but some are so ridiculously huge and have so many toppings that you practically need a forklift to get it to your mouth.

What food trends don't you understand?

BUBBLE TEA?!!! No just no. 🤮

TableFlowerss · 12/09/2021 19:48

@oohyoudevilyou

Avocado - mushy texture, little flavour and makes my lips tingle Brownies - overly sweet, especially their paler offspring; blondies
😂😂 brilliant

Oh my goodness!!!

Lobelian · 12/09/2021 19:48

Also, menus that do that 'add smashed avo +2, add vegan halloumi +5' thing, as if you're in a brunch spot in Brooklyn, not a greasy spoon in Leominster.

CatalinaCasesolver · 12/09/2021 19:49

Pulled meats, yuk

Burgers overflowing with all sorts of hanging looking stuff.

Vegan or veggie dishes costing the same as meat dishes.

Bavette steak charged at the price of a fillet.

Huge milkshakes with cupcakes, cookies, whipped cream, marshmallows, waffles and the kitchen sink all piled on top of them.

Not a food but menus where the price is just 9 or 7.5 with no £ sign. Sod off!

NotMyCat · 12/09/2021 19:51

The local burger place I love does pretzel buns only
Someone asked if they would start doing brioche ones and they replied with the vomit emoji GrinGrinGrin

ElephantOfRisk · 12/09/2021 19:51

Gin

separatedandseething · 12/09/2021 19:52

Wooden boards. I mean how do they actually clean other diners' saliva off them? It seeps into the cracks. Yuk. Just give me a flippin' plate.

Yes, yes to buns not holding burgers.

Twatty, pretentious descriptions of food when it's just reheated up pub grub, or else tiny portions for £46, and it's gone in one bite.

'Slaw', and mayonnaise on the side.

wendywoopywoo222 · 12/09/2021 19:52

Yep. Anything not on a plate. Ill always be asking them if they could go back and put it on a plate for me please. I don't want to eat of a tile or a wooden board etc etc.

TableFlowerss · 12/09/2021 19:53

@NotAnotherPylon

Another one fed up with vegan options replacing vegetarian options. This affects DP more than me as, while I prefer vegetarian food, I do occasionally eat meat, but DP doesn't eat meat at all and he is not vegan. Yet it is assumed he'll be ok with a few shreds of cardboard held together with wallpaper paste. Don't get me wrong, many of our favourite dishes, which I've been cooking for years, are vegan, but vegetarians have always been sidelined in restaurants with limited selections and mediocre dishes and now they're sidelined even further by the vegan trend.
Exactly- the vegan trend!
WeAreTheHeroes · 12/09/2021 19:54

The other thing about tapas in the UK is that they are far from authentic and do not reflect the variety you get in Spain. In no small part because it's a con and the restaurants are making you make a whole meal out of them.

limitedperiodonly · 12/09/2021 19:55

Why do people replace lettuce in prawn cocktail with avocado? It might be green but so is mould. Stop fucking with my '70s retro comfort food.

Beetroot tastes like mud.

And it might be authentic in the Middle East or North Africa but I do not want to be surprised with cardamom in my coffee.

Shallwegoforawalk · 12/09/2021 19:56

@HoneyDragon

Shitting salted cunting caramel, ruining chocolate, puddings, and anything else that stays still long enough to doused in the wretched stuff.
Couldn't have put it better myself! Totally DONE with salted caramel. Was actually over it 2 years ago at least.
Jourdain11 · 12/09/2021 19:57

Beetroot is only acceptable as fine shreds in bistro salad. I saw fried beetroot in a recipe the other day: bleh.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 12/09/2021 19:58

It has already been said many times but bloody vegan sheeze or Cheez or whatever the fuck they label it as on a perfectly good vegetarian pizza/pasta dish. Fuck off.

I eat fake meat/Quorn at home. I don't really want it on everything when I am out.

I once had ricotta on toast at a poncy hotel and they put lavender on it. It tasted like my nana's handbag

Jourdain11 · 12/09/2021 19:58

What about the smoked chocolate trend? I haven't had it, but it sounds revolting.

IglesiasPiggle · 12/09/2021 19:58

Thank god people don't understand the tapas thing. I like the concept but three lamb meatballs between four isn't going to feed anyone. Even if you order several dishes, you're still only getting a tiny bite of each.

If I'm having tapas I want to order and eat my own selection. They're too small to share.

Well, I used to think that myself. But then a couple of years ago I was battling a case of sebhorreic dermatitis on my face (and scalp) and couldn't figure out what was causing it till I tried an anti-inflammatory diet for 5 days or so which was completely gluten-free. It was a revelation. My skin did indeed improve and an additional positive was that the terrible wind (blush) that I was really struggling with really improved.

I'm the same. I try to low carb when I need to lose weight and that by its nature tends to be gluten free and fairly anti inflammatory. Not only does it work better than anything else, hands down, for weight loss but EVERYTHING else about me gets better. My digestive system, my aching joints, my sleep, my energy levels, my brain fog improves - everything.

If only I could get the discipline required to eat like it all the time. In spite of all the benefits I still fall off my wagon every few weeks and it takes me a while to get back on.

Chubbymummy12 · 12/09/2021 20:01

All the vegan food replacing the gluten free food, I have no issues with vegans, it's just the gluten free section is getting smaller and smaller and I can very very rarely grab a quick sandwich while I'm out now, it's all vegan stuff instead, the same in the freezer section and in the fridge bit. I have coeliac disease, my immune system attacks me if I eat gluten. I can't help it😩

BUBBLE TEA?!!! No just no.

Delicious! I guess it qualifies as a trend here but it’s been around in Asia for decades.

FuckingFabulous · 12/09/2021 20:05

Crushed potatoes. Just lazily done mash.

Anything being described as 'smashed'

Bubble tea

IglesiasPiggle · 12/09/2021 20:05

Chocolate orange everything.

@UseOfWeapons

Another vote for vegetarian, not just vegan options. Some of the vegetarian sausages used to be lovely, now they’re vegan they taste like shit. Kale. Why? Anything deconstructed is just bloody lazy. Stupid dips with everything, fish drenched in honey or chilli, or other stuff that totally overpowers the fish.
Kale dried out in the oven is lush
RedToothBrush · 12/09/2021 20:07

Stupid portion sizes.

More 'light bite' sizes please - both for me and DS cos normal portions are too big for me and children's menus should be destroyed and left in a distant century for being so dreadful.

DominicRaabsTravelAgent · 12/09/2021 20:08

Another recommendation for following We Want Plates.
