My mum has just been rushed into hospital

She had a bad headache, wanted to be sick and seemed confused/weak. She's not well in general but I've never seen her look so bad. She's been positive with Covid too so came to stay with me so I could keep an eye on her.

I'm fucking terrified. Have to wait for a couple of hours before I can ring the hospital and I'm just numb. My dad is no help. I need to tell my sister but don't want to worry her until I know something.

I don't even know why I'm posting, just need to get it out I think

Thank you.

Spoke to her doctor today and they're treating her for sepsis/pneumonia caused by the Covid. She's been a bit more awake and was moving her limbs so tiny improvements.

Oh, that's a scary diagnosis, OP. Praying she pulls through and recovers 100% Still holding your hand.

Hoping your Mum continues to improve Mouse and thinking of you both.

Poor lady.

I'm glad she is improving, QuestionableMouse.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 14/09/2021 15:05

I'm relieved to hear she has made a tiny improvement and fingers crossed for you this continues
Such a worry for you. Look after yourself tooFlowers

QuestionableMouse · 14/09/2021 15:21

Me too! It's just so fucking scary, especially as she went from poorly but okay to severely ill in the space of half an hour.

OP posts:
Antinerak · 14/09/2021 17:44

Sepsis and pneumonia are scary but she can get through this. With the right treatment she'll continue to make little improvements and she'll be with you again soon. I hope it has reassured you a bit and you can get some rest too. Sending love x

QuestionableMouse · 14/09/2021 17:46

Thank you. ❤️❤️

Not sure if I should make a complaint (give feedback?) to her GP. She rang them the day before and told them she had a chest infection and all they gave her was steroids, no antibiotics. Can't help but think antibiotics might have helped her not get so ill but I'm not sure if I'm just being reactive.

Antibiotics wouldn't have definitely helped a chest infection so steroids are a sensible prescription as a sort of cover all bases treatment. Did she self diagnose the chest infection?

They may have assumed the chest infection or symptoms were due to covid and gave steroids to help with those symptoms rather than to beat any infection.

You're definitely right to be reactive and it's good that you're trying to get across to the GP that the steroids didn't work but even if they had prescribed antibiotics the day before, it likely wouldn't have changed anything.

If she has a call or appointment with the same GP again you could mention what has happened and maybe ask them to explain what could have happened if she was given antibiotics- her current doctor at the hospital might be able to answer that over the phone for you.

TreeTed · 14/09/2021 21:30

I think at that point if she had tested positive for covid and was having chest symptoms, then the GP giving steroids was exactly the right thing to do and antibiotics wouldn’t have been appropriate.
Very glad to hear she’s doing better

SunshineCake · 15/09/2021 07:18

I hope you get better news today QuestionableMouse. What a scary time you are having Sad.

Silkiescatz · 15/09/2021 08:23

I hope you get some progress today Mouse I don't think I would complain at the moment as it might just add stress me but maybe ask a doctor if earlier antibiotics would have helped and check what meds your Mum is on now if they haven't said already.

I have no idea - our doctors was initially giving antibiotics for everything including covid symptoms last year but now seems more back to not issuing antibiotics easily and of course when they aren't seeing in person makes it harder. I think its normal to question everything though.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 15/09/2021 09:40

Morning @QuestionableMouse .
I'm looking after COVID patients at the moment. We tend to start with a steroid called dexamethasone for people with COVID. We found that not all antibiotics worked. Like a pp stated, ask on the next call what medications your mum is on .
I hope she starts to improve soon.

QuestionableMouse · 15/09/2021 09:47

Thank you! She's going for the MRI at 11 so that will hopefully give us some answers.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 15/09/2021 12:35

Still thinking of you and your Mum and hoping the MRI shows progress

Lollyneenah · 15/09/2021 13:08

@QuestionableMouse hi, so sorry you are going through this. I'm in almost exact same position as you but I'm on day 29 with my poor mum Flowers .mine isn't doing as 'well' as yours but I just wanted to let you know you're not alone going through this horrendous sedation removal process. I think it's a good sign your mum is resisting the vent, and small movements too are a tiny blessing.
Mine can open her eyes randomly but the doctors have gently said that they aren't hopeful due to her pre existing conditions.
PM me any time if you want to talk about it.
Definitely the hardest thing for me the last few weeks has been not knowing anyone in my position, and friends etc don't seem to know what to say and end up saying the wrong thing.
Sorry for the thread hijack, solidarity OP Flowers

QuestionableMouse · 15/09/2021 16:00

Hijack away! I'm so sorry. It's the hardest thing I've ever done. I need to phone the hospital but I don't want to do it in front of my nephews because they're small and we're trying to keep how bad it is from them.

spiderlight · 15/09/2021 17:05

Still thinking of you and your mum. Tiny improvements are good news at this point. My dad had meningitis and septicaemia when he was 84 and was sedated/ventilated on ITU for ten days. The process of bringing him round was horribly nerve-wracking and he took a long time to wake up properly - about three days, I think, which was longer than they'd expected. He did recover though and was with us another ten years.

QuestionableMouse · 15/09/2021 17:15

Thank you ❤️❤️❤️

I need to phone the hospital but part of me doesn't want to in case it's bad news.

OP posts:
uncomfortablydumb53 · 15/09/2021 17:22

I think if was really bad news they would call
My mum was in ITU in a similar situation but not Covid) and they did
Hopefully they'll have good, or at least stable news for you

mummymayhem18 · 15/09/2021 17:49

Hope she recovers and is soon back with her family.

QuestionableMouse · 15/09/2021 19:11

Absolutely not the news I wanted. The neurosurgeon has reviewed her MRI and she's has a bleed on her brain. Not sure what the plan is but I'll find out in the morning. I can't even cry. I'm just fucking numb.
