Would you judge someone for having cubic zerconia stones

We have been married for over 40 years.
My original engagement and wedding rings are getting to tight.
DH wants to buy me a new set.
But the prices are very expensive for us pensioners. I have seen a lovely set in 9ct gold which has cz and not diamonds
Would you think Cheap if you saw them.
Or should I just get one diamond band even though I love wearing a solitaire

Nope. Diamonds only have value because we decided they do, they’re just shiny rocks.
And most people can’t tell, anyway. Save your money!

3GreenPullups · 05/09/2021 16:49

CZ are still naturally produced stones and have a similar refractive index to diamonds which is why ther are such lovely substitutes.

I use them liberally in my blingy mcbling jewellery and love them. particularly during covid when all the handwashing meant I was worried my diamonds would go down the drain.

Wear them and love them I say!

No one would ever know, and to be honest, I would judge anyone tacky enough to quiz you on your jewellery.

Personally, I wouldn't be able to tell, so the only way I would know would be if you told me.

I'm a big believer than rings very personal choices and should be much more about sentiment and commitment than their commercial value.

Get something you both love the look of and enjoy yourselves.

Nicolastar78 · 05/09/2021 17:00

I have friends who do and will judge engagement rings and jewelry, infact anything really and it has always annoyed me,My first engagement ring cost 5.99 ,16 years ago, and I still have it ( don't wear it as DH upgraded it a few times)

Our first wedding rings were cheap Argos finest ones too, were dented and broken within weeks..

My final and last wedding /engagement rings are diamond and gold and we're more expensive, but the first ones are always going to mean way more to me than the others,. What I'm trying to say is it's not about the cost of the items it's the sentiment behind them,

So OP if you want to wear cubic zirconia instead of diamonds then go ahead, it's no one else's bees wax, feck you could wear glass and it shouldn't matter, you wear ( especially wedding/engagement ) rings for you and your DH ,for the commiemt and love, there has always been more to engagement rings than just being flash xxx

AdditionalCharacter · 05/09/2021 17:02

My engagement ring is a cz one. Still wear it every day for over 20 years now. Doesn't bother me one jot.

Soubriquet · 05/09/2021 17:04

No one would know unless they carry a diamond gadget or you tell them

lannistunut · 05/09/2021 17:04

No one will know, and your marriage sounds genuine which is more important than the jewellery.

SirChenjins · 05/09/2021 17:04

I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference - and definitely wouldn’t judge!

My engagement ring is my great granny’s from over 100 years ago that I had redesigned and reset so it’s unique - would you be able to do something similar with your existing rings (if you wanted to keep them, that is)?

SirenSays · 05/09/2021 17:05

I wouldn't notice or care! Wear whatever you like and can afford! Have you considered second hand or moissanite?

GoodnightGrandma · 05/09/2021 17:05

I wouldn’t notice, but have you thought about having your rings re-sized ?

SionnachRua · 05/09/2021 17:06

If anything I'd admire you for not buying into the deBeers BS that diamonds are best and the only way to go.

Before I get jumped on ,that's no shade to the diamond buyers - wear what you like. But I personally don't like diamond rings and find the hype around them ridiculous.

Disneycharacter · 05/09/2021 17:07

Unless they are ridiculously huge and ostentatious I'm sure no one would notice.

Mischance · 05/09/2021 17:09

It's nothing to do with being judged or it being cheap. It is going to be your ring, so you choose what you want and what you can afford. You won't be wearing it to impress others; and if that is the aim, then what can I say really? - ridiculous.

Autumnally · 05/09/2021 17:12

I probably wouldn’t notice at all. It might be cost effective to have your existing rings resized or reworked into another style, or you could also look for second hand jewellery - you can get some bargains that way.

Mariell · 05/09/2021 17:13

Take your rings to a jeweller and ask him to show you comparable rings made with CZ stones and see if you can tell the difference.

I don’t expect that you will be able to do so.

hashbrownsandwich · 05/09/2021 17:14

I wouldn't judge someone who had them.
I would judge someone who judged someone else for having them. I'd judge them as a dickhead.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 05/09/2021 17:15

I wouldn't give a shit.
Even if I could tell the difference, which I can't.
And even if I actually noticed the ring in the first place, which I'm unlikely to.

Don't chuck money away because you fear random nobodies might be looking hard at your ring and might be able to tell a diamond from a cubic whatsit and might be the snobby arsehole type.

bamboocat · 05/09/2021 17:15

Even jewellers can't tell the difference unless they take them out of the setting and weigh them.

Nothing wrong with them.

Frazzled2207 · 05/09/2021 17:18

I wouldn’t know so of course would not judge
I am not sure why resizing the original rings are not options though

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/09/2021 17:19

Even jewellers can't tell the difference unless they take them out of the setting and weigh them

Pretty sure that's not true but I wouldn't judge anyone on any jewellery they wore.

QueeniesCroft · 05/09/2021 17:19

Don't stop yourself from doing something meaningful to you, just because some people might bitch about it.
For every single possible thing, there is a person who will sneer at you for it. The trick is not to care.

Duetorain · 05/09/2021 17:19

I don’t look closely at people’s fingers so wouldn’t notice. I haven’t seen enough of each to know the difference.

AlfonsoTheMango · 05/09/2021 17:20

I wouldn't judge and would think it a sensible choice.

JaninesEyePatch · 05/09/2021 17:20

Wouldn't know and even if I did wouldn't judge. Hope you enjoy your new jewellery 🙂
