What does your DC want to be?

DS1 is almost 13. He's spent the summer pondering his future.

He's decided he wants to be a flight attendant. He has looked into entry requirements for a few different airlines and has told me his plan going forward.

He's going to continue learning German as an extra language will come in handy, do travel and tourism at college followed by tourism management at the local uni before applying for jobs.

He's been reading up accounts from actual flight attendants and absolutely loves the idea. I've never seen him so enthusiastic about a career before.

I’m glad he is so enthused about it! I have a friend who is a flight attendant and she absolutely loves it.

My daughter is only 10 but since the age of about 7 has wanted to be a dentist 🦷 she spends time learning about teeth/gums/oral health for fun. She enjoys a trip to the dentist and she had her first hygienist appointment this year which was apparently the best day out ever!

That's a really positive post 🙂.

Ds1 wants to be an investment banker in the city and retire at 35. He has just finished a levels and about to embark on his degree. He actively follows companies and invests.

Ds2 has said he is interested in accountancy. I'm not sure how valid this is as both his father & I, plus his step mum and his late step dad are/were all accountants.

Pascha · 05/09/2021 09:55

Ds1 wants to be a racing driver. He's nearly 11 with no particular experience so I can't see it happening. Ds2 has no idea. He wants to stay home.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 05/09/2021 09:59

My 8yo wants to join the Navy. This is the latest idea.. but all on the Seeingvthe World theme.
My10yo wants to work with animals. Probably something like a Vet Nurse.

Noshowwithoutpunch · 05/09/2021 10:00

DC 12 wants to be a police officer.
Considering the entry nowadays I'm advising putting some effort into school work as currently makes no effort at all and it shows.
My academic 11year old wants to be a dog walker.

Primrosefields · 05/09/2021 10:03

Archeologist then lecturer when he has a family so he isn't away so much.

He is a whiz in geography, history and science. He wants to go to university in Wales since speaking to his geography teacher

WhatsMyNameGonnaBeNow · 05/09/2021 10:11

Dd nearly 12 is undecided between primary school teacher or speech & language therapist. Ds 10 wants to be an engineer. He’s not sure what type of engineer but definitely that’s what he currently wants to be.

Could all change of course but no harm in encouraging them to make the connection between effort required now and what they want to do with their working lives Smile.

NotRainingToday · 05/09/2021 10:15

DD wants to be a midwife.
DS wants to be a cool fashion icon.

Daftasabroom · 05/09/2021 10:17

DS1 linguist, he's mind boggling clever but autistic as well. His dream job would be to tour the world transcribing dying out languages that have been written down before.

DS2, AI, computing, mechatronics, engineering.

merrymelody · 05/09/2021 10:19

DD is in her third year of university, reading psychology. She wants to be a criminologist. DS is taking a gap year as he has no idea what he wants to be, except that he wants to "help people".

cliffdiver · 05/09/2021 10:20

DD1 (9): Marine Biologist

DD2 (7): Teacher like me, in the same school as me so she can see me every day

Although yesterday they were cutting up old pyjamas to fashion into clothes, and both decided they would be fashion designers instead.

CMOTDibbler · 05/09/2021 10:21

Currently, ds(15) has only got as far as he wants to do a PhD in Sweden (for the white tie and sword ceremony). No actual career plans

Bbq1 · 05/09/2021 10:29

Ds just turned 16 is very talented musically, mainly playing guitar and plans to go to a specialist media college in Liverpool next year to do Music Performance & Production. This may be followed by Uni. He will definitely do something in music as a career, I think.

AlexaShutUp · 05/09/2021 10:33

16yo dd wants to be a doctor. Possibly a pediatrician, but staying open minded at the moment. She has just started her a levels and has done loads of research into all the different requirements for a medical application.

KidsAreMean · 05/09/2021 11:04

DD (9) wanted to be a doctor until this year. Now she's decided she wants to travel and be an explorer! [I think it's a reaction to COVID and travel restrictions]

spiderlight · 05/09/2021 11:14

Mine (14) wants to be a pilot, but if that doesn't happen, he wants to work in the motorsport industry - deep down he wants to be a Japanese drift racer, but he's looking at degrees in motorsport engineering as a more realistic option!

BearSoFair · 05/09/2021 11:37

DS2 (11) wants to be a museum curator and DD (13) an illustrator

Older DS1 (19) is just about to start training as a barber after a couple of years being very uncertain of what he wanted to be doing.

Stompythedinosaur · 05/09/2021 11:40

Dd1 wants to be a scientist, possibly an astronaut, but also do dancing or performance in some way. Dd2 wants to own an alpaca farm.

VaguelyInteresting · 05/09/2021 11:42

DS (5) wants to be a spy- but only if I’m one too and we can we partners. 😭

Thurlow · 05/09/2021 11:43

DD(9) wants to be a forensic pathologist. I looked up the length of time it takes the other day. 15 years #sob…

liveforsummer · 05/09/2021 11:44

A vet. She's dyslexic, scatty and not very academic though so not sure it's very realistic. I've never said that but have suggested tactfully that vet nurses are often more hands on and spend more time caring for the animals so she may prefer that instead

slightlyworriedthissunday · 05/09/2021 11:45

My eldest wants to be everything! He actually worries about how he will fit in all his jobs.

Youngest … more like me and absolutely no clue.

TweedePrik · 05/09/2021 11:47

DD (17) wants to teach. She currently plans to study History/Economics at Uni.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 05/09/2021 11:49

DD1 wants to be a biochemist ( so is taking Biology, Chemistry & Psychology A levels)

DD2 wants to move to France, raise chickens & goats and be an artisan baker (good on her!)

MarshaBradyo · 05/09/2021 11:51

Ds (16) - an engineer probably aeronautical, with tech as back up

Ds(11) - something entrepreneurial would be his preference or finance related, also quite creative and musical but probably still former
