What do you wear at home to keep warm

I am looking for suggestions for what to wear when at home, to keep warm during the autumn/winter months.

I don't have a huge amount of money to spend, so cheap and cheerful ideas please.

Also, it needs to be comfortable and something that I wouldn't be embarrassed to answer the door in!

That's a lot

BadHipRising · 31/08/2021 00:59

I'd probably move if my heating was that much. Do you live in the Arctic Circle?

GTAlogic · 31/08/2021 01:04

In late Autumn and in winter I wear thermal vests and leggings under whatever clothes I have on. They're thin enough to not cause a problem but do keep me lovely and warm. I bought them as packs of 4 from Matalan.

I also wear a big fluffy PJ top that I bought from Tesco. It's massive and is like wearing a bear hug.

GTAlogic · 31/08/2021 01:08

@Travielkapelka

Does nobody just put the heating on???
Not when it costs a fortune and you don't really have the money to pay for it, no. Also, my dh is always too hot so if I put the heating on for myself he'd boil. It's easier for me to put on an extra layer or too.
BadHipRising · 31/08/2021 01:09

Are all of the rest of you genuinely skint or are you just doing that weird Mumsnet thing of not keeping your house warm despite having money?

Graphista · 31/08/2021 01:09

Layers!

They don't all have to be "warm" layers as they will still contribute

So eg :

Tights, leggings AND trousers of some kind (joggers or "slacks" work better than jeans really) you can also add warm fluffy socks

Bra (if you wish I'm flexible these days), vest top, t-shirt, long sleeved top AND a sweater and maybe even also a cardigan (I buy cardigans and coats at least a size bigger in order to fit them over loads of layers)

Slippers are a must
Also get dressed when it's warm to trap the warmth and then turn heating/thermostat down.

What kind of heating does your home have and how many people live in it/what's the setup?

I live alone now and so I focus on heating the room I am in with what the Americans call space heaters rather than having the central heating on from as soon as it gets chilly. Halogen heaters are fantastic and very cheap to buy and run.

Also use throws when sat on sofa you're not as warm when you're not active

Yes to tuck it all in too!

And have hot drinks if you don't like tea/coffee then soup, water with a little lemon juice, hot chocolate (mind the cals if you need to) I like earl grey tea myself with a little extra lemon juice. As it's a "no milk" tea it stays hotter for longer. Although note to self I need a new cosy for the pot!

BadHipRising · 31/08/2021 01:12

Fuck me I'd rather perish than drink tea with no milk just to keep a bit warmer. This is extreme fucking stuff really.

Bogeyes · 31/08/2021 02:04

I wear a fleece. It's light and comfy

I turn up the heating. I really don't earn a lot of money but I refuse to be cold inside my actual home. Unless you're really really skint (and I am pretty fucking skint believe me) I don't know why you wouldn't. Nothing, no item of clothing, compensates for being in a cold house. It is miserable.
I get what your saying it is miserable.

Slightly dreading wfh this winter for this reason. Being sat at a desk is super chilly. Got through last winter with hot water bottles stuffed down my fleece 😂 mmm sexy sexy beast of a woman that I am!

Are you doing that weird Mumsnet thing of posting snarky comments just for the sake of it? Honestly, catch onto yourself and have a bit more self awareness - it’ll do you the world of good.

Fwiw, my house is warm - I am not. Unless I hog the radiator I feel the cold, esp as I wfh in front of a laptop all day and don’t move above as I should. HTH.

If I couldn’t afford to heat my home and was skint so fucking what?

Lweji · 31/08/2021 09:17

Layers. Very warm thick wolly socks.

Other than that, I recommend physical activity. Either exercise or housework at regular intervals.

If you have to work at a desk, I also recommend a heated footwarmer. Failing that, a hot water bottle also works. Grin

Covering your head also helps. A warm hoodie could do the trick.

Finally, mittens.

GrouchyKiwi · 31/08/2021 09:36

We keep our heating pretty low for two reasons:

  1. we have a Newfoundland so keep it on the cooler side for her (she likes to be where we are)

  2. said Newf and children are in and out of the house all day and are crap at shutting doors (I really need to train the dog). I'm not wasting money on heating just for it to go out the door.

Hopdathelf · 31/08/2021 09:48

As I said up thread, its on a meter and is expensive. Does no one read threads anymore?

Sorry if I’m being dim but isn’t everyone on a meter? How else would the energy supplier know how much to charge?

BashfulClam · 31/08/2021 09:55

I am a cold person and really felt it last year even with the heating on. The room I am in is in shade all the time, the room DH is is in in sunlight and warm, we can’t swap as he need to bigger desk as has more ‘gubbins’ than I do. I use thick slipper socks, thermal leggings, wrist warmers and a thin blanket. If it gets really cold the electric throw is used. I think I’ll use the wrist warmers even in the office as I tend to have cold hands for around 9 months of the year.

Anothermountain · 31/08/2021 09:56

Just for info; for those asking about the heating .. we live in a really old house that is difficult to heat.
We love the location. It's such a lovely home in spring and summer, and it looks great with Christmas decorations up, but it is very cold in autumn & winter. So it's sometimes not as simple as saying "put the heating on" ... which we do ...but there are parts of the house that remain cold.

OhThatChicken · 31/08/2021 10:12

I have a fake Oodie that I got for £25 on Amazon that I wear while working from home and not on Zoom calls. If people are actually going to see me then I swap for a long hooded cardigan with jumper underneath.

Totally agree with people saying fleece lined leggings and socks are the thing.

Drinking tea with milk is a sin! Grin

We're fairly skint but I also spend most of the day with the back door open for the dog. I tend to air the house in the morning too regardless of the weather. So putting the heating on in the day when everyone else is out is pointless. It's cheaper to wear layers and have a good blanket.
IToldYouIWasFreaky · 31/08/2021 14:23

Cashmere. Not exactly cheap but sometimes you can find a good deal and a jumper or cardi in a classic style would last years.
I've got a grey H&M one that I wear over a long sleeved t-shirt and it keeps me toasty without overheating..can't bear that too hot, sweaty feeling that you get with artificial fibres

timtam23 · 31/08/2021 14:28

Uniqlo Heattech range - turtleneck & thermal leggings, some sort of tunic/jumper/sweatshirt over the turtleneck. Warm socks and slippers.

MrsRockAndRoll · 31/08/2021 16:13

Following for ideas

MeredithMae · 31/08/2021 16:20

CANON: the Sienna fake oodie is only £17.99 right now.

I have one and live in it, it has cuffed sleeves which help as I hate cold wrists. I also wear slippers socks on top of my normal socks. I'm such a cold person in a very old cold house!

MeredithMae · 31/08/2021 16:20

(I don't have an Oodie to compare it to mind you, but it really is great)
