What do you wear at home to keep warm

I am looking for suggestions for what to wear when at home, to keep warm during the autumn/winter months.

I don't have a huge amount of money to spend, so cheap and cheerful ideas please.

Also, it needs to be comfortable and something that I wouldn't be embarrassed to answer the door in!

I wear slippers, because f my feet get cold, it feels as if it takes me far longer to warm up again. I also wear a scarf round my neck - keeping my neck warm seems to help.

Then, as others have said, layers and fleece.

Dressing gowns are really effective and you can always pull them off if answering them door. M&S do some extra warm thermal later long sleeve t shirts which area great too

Hoody and furry slippers. Sometimes I Chuck a cardigan or dressing gown on top. I just layer up basically!

@Cantthinkofanything123

I bought a heated blanket/throw from Argos last year to keep warm when WFH - literally life changing!
Do you have a link to this please? Smile

Fleece lined crocs or thick socks and normal crocs, fleece lined tracksuit, merino T-shirt, fleece, scarf (makes a huge difference). Hat and fingerless gloves if it's really cold. Easy to ake off before answering door!

MaMelon · 30/08/2021 19:28

Oh - I think I may have found it. Is it the Relaxwell by Dreamland? www.argos.co.uk/product/7074572?clickSR=slp:term:heated%20throw:1:37:1

OverByYer · 30/08/2021 19:29

Socks, cardigan and hot water bottle

Yes - that's the one! I love it! I was spending so much money having the heating on all day as was WFH and not moving much made me freezing - but this is perfect. I occasionally stick the heating on for a quick blast, but the rest of the time I just sit under this. I think it costs something like 2p a day to run.

Socks are super important for keeping warm. I like heat holders. I also wear a normal pair of socks and leg warmers to mix it up.

Like others, it's layers here. A vest, a long sleeved top and a jumper. If I'm working from home, I have a massive cardi to put over it all and if it's arctic, a heated throw.

I've also knitted a couple of shrugs to throw over my lap or shoulders for when it's chilly.

I hate being cold and I'm always bloody cold.

MaMelon · 30/08/2021 19:33

@Cantthinkofanything123 - thanks - it’s now on my shopping list! Smile

EmergencyPoncho · 30/08/2021 19:34

Primark usually do thermal tops, as do marks. Primary do thermal fleecy leggings, as do tk maxx, they are pretty hideous but really warm .

EmergencyPoncho · 30/08/2021 19:34

I got wool socks from tkmaxx last year and they are lovely.

ISpyCobraKai · 30/08/2021 19:36

I have a heated foot muff, its amazing.

imacuddler · 30/08/2021 19:37

I also wear a gilet and a hot water bottle underneath.
I'm getting worried about what effect the hot water bottle will have on my skin and also breathing in the rubber as we use the kettle to fill it Blush. So may try to break that addiction this year and buy the heated blanket.

BikeRunSki · 30/08/2021 19:38

Sheepskin slippers and massive hoody over ordinary clothes.

GameSetMatch · 30/08/2021 19:40

House coat AKA dressing gown, call it a house coat and you can answer the door in it without being embarrassed. I have a really long woolly cardi that’s very old and hokey but so comfortable, why not try a long cardigan.

lljkk · 30/08/2021 19:44

leggings under jeans
old socks (ripped open) as wrist warmers
finger-less gloves
4 pairs of socks
4 tops, including long sleeve

lljkk · 30/08/2021 19:44
  • fleecy neck buff, hat if required
Itstheprinciple · 30/08/2021 19:44

I always have my dressing gown on over my clothes in winter. Although my mum bought me a fluffy poncho type thing for Christmas last year so I began wearing that instead and I feel more comfortable answering the door in that. I usually whip off the dressing gown on the way to answer the door and shove it in the understairs cupboard on the way past.

MadeForThis · 30/08/2021 19:46

Fake oodie like the sienna on Amazon.
Wooly hat.
Warm socks.
Layers

Ellarain · 30/08/2021 19:47

Fleece top, fleeced lined leggings, big wooly cardigan, wooly ponch/shawl style thingy, warm socks, fluffy blanket and hot water bottle.

Scunneredcrump · 30/08/2021 19:48

I live in a very old, cold, house and I honestly I think it's better to wear ordinary clothes (jeans, jumper, or yoga pants if more comfortable) with proper shoes and socks (trainers or wool lined slippers) and a body warmer or gilet over the top. Add a woolly hat if you must!

I personally dislike drifting about in "lounge wear" for the simple reason it encourages me to "lounge" and I like being able to pop out with the dogs at a moment's notice. I loathe wearing dressing gowns around the house as the sleeves get caught on everything, or dip in to things, and they are bulky. And if you sit under a heated blanket, it's lovely while you are cosy and warm under it, but the minute you get up (when you dare) you have the unpleasant shock of going from warm to cold. At least a body warmer has convenient pockets, it's fine to pop out in, or answer the door in, great to drive in, and allows you to take your accumulated body warmth with you wherever you go, unlike a blanket.

Sorry for the essay but this is my specialist subject Grin

grapewine · 30/08/2021 19:49

I wear a onesie on deadline days where I'm locked in my office and not leaving the flat or answering the door unless there's a fire.

Other days I wear thermal tights and layers under tunics, oversize sweaters, or dresses. And there's always a fleece blanket close by.

NotMyCat · 30/08/2021 19:50

Heated throw
Fleece lined leggings
Thermal vest tucked in!
Body warmer
Socks
Ugg type slippers

Mustard foot bath with a brew if all else fails!

ufucoffee · 30/08/2021 19:52

A cardigan that is over 30 years old. I don't care about answering the door in it.
