What do you wear at home to keep warm

I am looking for suggestions for what to wear when at home, to keep warm during the autumn/winter months.

I don't have a huge amount of money to spend, so cheap and cheerful ideas please.

Also, it needs to be comfortable and something that I wouldn't be embarrassed to answer the door in!

Layers, wool and fleecy lined socks, a hot water bottle and a blanket. The room I work in at home gets cool in the afternoon even on the hottest day because it’s very shaded. Lovely to come into from the heat but chilly to work in all day so I have my blanket all year 😁

Two layers of silk vests from patra (long sleeves) and a wool jumper. Agree with the PP who says tuck them in. Wool socks and sheepskin slipper boots. Silk vests are not cheap to buy but mine last for years.

Uniqlo Airtech thermal leggings. Layers of thin merino. Merino joggers.
Sheepskin slippers but no socks. This is in Melbourne, near the sea, so has a winter like a mild London one.

Fivefourthreetwo · 30/08/2021 22:27

I couldn't afford an Oodie so bought an oversized hoodie from Dunelm. It's sooo warm and so much cheaper than an Oodie.

bedtimestories · 30/08/2021 22:29

I wear a zip up dressing gown and just take it off when i answer the door...... if I'm bothered, which I rarely am! 🤣

justasking111 · 30/08/2021 22:45

I wear those fluffy socks and slipper boots over them. Found it gorgeous fluffy thick dressing gown in Primark last winter looks like a black kimono with pink flowers that goes on in cold weather

PeaAndHamSoupFromAChicken · 30/08/2021 22:48

Hooded blanket with normal clothes under. If someone comes to the door I just leave the blanket. I like soft slipper socks for my feet, preferably with grips so I don't slide across my floors.

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 30/08/2021 22:50

Black leggings
Long sleeved t shirt
Chunky cashmere cardi from Gap six years ago
Bed socks
Ugh slippers

notelegant · 30/08/2021 22:53

M&S thermal jumpers and leggings.
Thermal or other thick socks
Fleece jacket
Thermal hat if needed as most of heat escapes through our head.

MsMarple · 30/08/2021 23:07

Merino wool or cashmere roll neck, cardigan and fingerless gloves. Sheepskin boot slippers, with warm socks. Also a heated over blanket on my lap if its really chilly!

shinynewapple21 · 30/08/2021 23:09

Last year I had some fleece lined tracksuit bottoms (Uniqlo), a furry fleece lined hoody (Uniqlo) and a teddy fleece half zip top (Next). And furry slipper boots .

Kevinbrady · 30/08/2021 23:15

Woolly tights! I love them in Autumn/Winter as I wear dungarees or tea dresses from the summer but with a cardigan, tights and boots.

Also - fluffy socks from Primark with slipper boots and a wooly cardigan. When I was a student a couple years ago, I’d study at home whilst the children were at school and begrudged putting the heating on. So, I’d wear pyjamas over my tights with a cardigan and scarf!

Travielkapelka · 30/08/2021 23:17

Does nobody just put the heating on???

ISpyCobraKai · 30/08/2021 23:24

As I said up thread, its on a meter and is expensive.
Does no one read threads anymore?

Yep, but not till at least late October. Currently in my bed with electric blanket on for 20 mins.
IceLace100 · 30/08/2021 23:34

I wear a big fleece hoodie.

But then again I don't care what people think when the doorbell rings...

LoveFall · 30/08/2021 23:48

I am a bit shocked by how much some of you wear.

I wear thicker leggings, a tunic style top, a warm cardigan or pullover jumper, socks and my warm birkenstock slippers. If I get chilly sitting reading, watching TV, or working at my desk I have a selection of throws of varying weights.

Mind you, I live in a temperate rainforest and it is seldom below freezing. We also have large window that are a nightmare in summer but gain heat nicely in winter. Can't win them all.

I think you answered your own question there!

We live in a colder climate and are cheapskates with the heating. That's why we wear more clothes haha.

blibblibs · 31/08/2021 00:18

The sienna oodies from amazon are great, I've just ordered more before the cold weather sets in and they end up out of stock.
We don't have any gas in our house and it's ridiculously expensive to have the heating on so we don't. Small electric heater for a quick blast getting out of the shower, otherwise it's just layers and fingerless gloves.

cissyandbessy · 31/08/2021 00:22

I got this last year www.argos.co.uk/product/5261992 and it's AMAZING. The fur is super soft, doesn't shed and has washed like new. Love it so much. Am about to get Oodies in prep for this Winter as I spent so much time last year shivering and hate how annoying dressing gowns are.

BadHipRising · 31/08/2021 00:26

I turn up the heating. I really don't earn a lot of money but I refuse to be cold inside my actual home. Unless you're really really skint (and I am pretty fucking skint believe me) I don't know why you wouldn't. Nothing, no item of clothing, compensates for being in a cold house. It is miserable.

cissyandbessy · 31/08/2021 00:27

And for cheap and cheerful
I got some fleece lined leggings on Amazon for around a fiver each which changed my dog walking massively! We're toasty warm though deeply unattractive.

Sometimes even with heating on, I get cold when I'm sat at my desk not moving for 3hrs or so and I can't get up and move around. That's mostly when I use a heated throw My body temp is a bit knackered too (thyroid but also drugs that make me alternately sweat or shiver!) So it's easier to add layers rather than turn heating up down up down...
blibblibs · 31/08/2021 00:51

I get what your saying BadHipRising but giving £300 per month to an electricity company makes me more miserable than being a bit chilly
