What do you wear at home to keep warm

I am looking for suggestions for what to wear when at home, to keep warm during the autumn/winter months.

I don't have a huge amount of money to spend, so cheap and cheerful ideas please.

Also, it needs to be comfortable and something that I wouldn't be embarrassed to answer the door in!

Rules out dressing gown then!

fruitpastille · 30/08/2021 18:47

Sheepskin boots as slippers from tk Maxx. Long chunky cardigan (most supermarkets) and a scarf over other clothes. Microwave wheatbag when sitting down.

BeautyQueenIamNot · 30/08/2021 18:50

I layer up

Always wear a base layer, then a long sleeved top with a big oversized jumper or chunky knit cardigan (my current one is from eBay was £6.99 including p&p) and thick socks…I find if my feet are cold I never get warm.

I bought a heated blanket/throw from Argos last year to keep warm when WFH - literally life changing!

I brought one a few weeks ago ready for winter.

I'm sat here now with it on because all the windows are open and my feet are cold 🤣

I wear fleecy pj bottoms/ lounge pants, plain t shirts and hoodies.

Like being in PJs but dressed and very comfy.

sittingonacornflake · 30/08/2021 18:57

Thermal leggings are amaaaaaazing. I also like to wear a polo neck thermal to keep any chills out and then layer up as needed on top. Usually all I need is an extra jumper and fluffy socks and I am snug as a bug all done. Got my thermals from mountain warehouse I think.

ISpyCobraKai · 30/08/2021 18:57

Fleece and lots of it.
I have no shame about answering the door though, so long as I'm warm.

Cherryana · 30/08/2021 18:57

I wear M and S long sleeve thermal vests. They have been a game changer.

Scotlass · 30/08/2021 18:58

DD bought me an oodie type thing for Christmas- I lived in it up until March time. Not sure about not being embarrassed opening the door though Grin

MaMelon · 30/08/2021 18:59

Thermals - long Johns and a long sleeved top - or fleece lined tights or leggings underneath trousers or jeans. Primark do some cheap ones. I usually wear a fleece or fleece lined hoodie and have a hot water bottle for when it’s cold. I do keep the house heated but I really feel the cold so I’m always wrapped up as well.

Bordois · 30/08/2021 19:00

Primark fleece lined leggings.

tempchecked · 30/08/2021 19:00

I second the heated throw, best money ever spent and so inexpensive to run.

I'm a huge fan of fleece zip up jacket things, long sleeved tee shirt underneath and padded gilet on top. God you'd think I was going to climb Mt. Everest! Can de layer as required and with warm jogging pants or similar can answer the door no problem!

MaMelon · 30/08/2021 19:01

Oh - and wool jumpers, usually roll necks. Got to be wool or cashmere. Have a look on eBay for wool or lambswool jumpers, and occasionally the odd cashmere bargain.

tootingbeclido · 30/08/2021 19:01

a onesie. .you cannot get a warmer garment

kowari · 30/08/2021 19:01

If I'm very cold I wear Uniqlo heattech leggings under jeans and a merino long sleeved top. Otherwise just jeans, cotton long sleeve top and hoodie, ugg style warm boots as slippers (not worn outside!). I normally only need the latter though, house kept at 17 in the evenings so warm enough.

2pointfourmonkeys · 30/08/2021 19:02

Primark plush lined leggings are amazing! If needed i even wear them under other trousers to look a bit smarter!
Also, dressing gown all the way!! I have coat pegs by the from door. If i need to answer the door i quickly take off the dressing gown and hang it up!

SunbathingDragon · 30/08/2021 19:03

Warm slippers, Heat Holder socks, thermals, fleece lined leggings, heated overblanket, fingerless gloves (can heat up via USB if working on a computer), a big warm cardigan and a gilet.

Screwyoularry · 30/08/2021 19:03

Wool socks. They keep you warm In the winter & cool in the summer.

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 30/08/2021 19:07

Hoodies over a top, woolly socks, slippers, basically layer up.

I have a couple pairs fleece lined leggings and couple fleece lined joggers, I team this up with t-shirts and a thick woolly cardi
icedcoffees · 30/08/2021 19:11

Leggings, layers, thick jumpers/hoodies, sheepskin/fleece lined slippers and socks.

We had no heating at all last winter (except the fire) and it was bloody freezing in the mornings, lol.

Madcats · 30/08/2021 19:13

The key is keeping your wrists, ankles and neck warm. And wear a vest!

My Gumbies boot slippers were a game-changer (look out for sales), but aren't pretty. You can probably find something similar/cheaper on Amazon etc,

YukoandHiro · 30/08/2021 19:13

Agree with PPs saying start with socks and slippers - cold feet are a nightmare

MaMelon · 30/08/2021 19:15

Oh - and tuck your vest into your knickers/tights/trousers/whatever. Basically just tuck it in!
