Why is everyone smoking weed now?

199 replies

Thetepidstepper · 29/08/2021 00:40

I mean it's everywhere. My neighbour smokes it and stinks the block out with it. In addition I smell it very often just round and about, coming from people's gardens and in pubs and that.

I don't like it because I had a massive anxiety attack first and only time I smoked weed and it left me with PTSD, I mean it was severe. According to my therapist this is actually quite common. I mean therapists know that weed is nasty stuff that makes people feel bad, quite a lot of the time.

But still people are smoking it. And cops are turning a blind eye obviously.

I wish it was legalised really so that these stinky people would have to fit fans and vents and the like.

But until that happens loads of people are at it even though it makes them be boring cunts. Why!

@HateJudgmentalPeople

Shit I added a comment without quoting you so my comment before this is to you.
But you claim to 'hate judgemental people' Yet here you are, making a huge sweeping judgement about someone's mental health!

Honestly if it wasn't so shitty and unkind, it would be funny.

Everyone is different, my friend can drink 2 bottles of wine and feel fine the next day, the other has a glass and feels sick & anxious.
Everyone is different, hence the importance of us all for making no judgement and having an open mind.

I strongly suggest you change your username asap. It really is a joke.

HateJudgmentalPeople · 29/08/2021 09:48

I already answered you and said it sounds unbelievable that it happened, not that the PP made it up! I’ve just never heard of this before but clearly it’s an extreme reaction and not very common, I used to get a little anxious with the first joint (I smoke it at weekends only) but nothing like what the OP described.

brittleheadgirl · 29/08/2021 09:49

@vegas888

Some of us have had the most horrific things happen to us in life, beatings, rape, miscarriages, parents who have died in tragic ways so yes, when people say they’ve suffered 10 years ptsd from smoking a joint I do question it. *@brittleheadgirl*, yes dear, I do know it’s 2021.
So your mental health issues are more valid then because you believe the cause of them is more 'serious' Jesus, is there no limit on posters berating one another via the Mumsnets 'misery lottery'?

My mental health is very strong, I cope with things that seem to make others crumble. It doesn't mean I don't treat them with kindness and love when they aren't dealing with something that I might regard as 'nothing'

So yes, your attitude is very outdated and belongs back in the 50s 'love'

HateJudgmentalPeople · 29/08/2021 09:49

Also I don’t claim to hate judgmental people at all, it’s a Mumsnet name, where did I claim to hate it?! I had to make some name up and that day I did then I just so happened to hate judgey people, saying it sounds unbelievable to hear someone say that they have PTSD after a joint isn’t being judgemental at all!

OrlandointheWilderness · 29/08/2021 09:51

It's everywhere in our village. Horrible when taking dc out with the dog for a walk. Vile stuff, I can't stand the smell of it.

StevieNix · 29/08/2021 09:51

I personally don’t care if people smoke weed, the only problem I have with it is I hate the smell!
We live in a flat and we are unable to have our windows open on one side unless we want our flat to absolutely stink of weed, and it makes all my bedding/soft furnishings stink of it too! The neighbours downstairs stand directly underneath my bedroom/living room window and smoke it constantly- despite me asking nicely if they could just move away from under my window they’ve denied they smoke it Hmm despite me seeing them smoke it and the huge ashtray underneath my window - I’m a smoker (outside my flat and away from others) so I know the difference between normal cigarettes and a spliff! Lol
I honestly don’t have a problem at all with people smoking it (even though I choose not too) I just think it’s one of the worst smells in the world.

So you just hated 'judgey' people for a day? Ok... Confused
MyMabel · 29/08/2021 09:53

It reeks like cat piss.

I remember the first time I’ve ever smelt it, I was expecting it to smell like normal cigarette smoke.. so I was sniffing my clothes and asking my friends if I smelt like cat piss because I thought maybe our cat has had an accident on my clothes or something.. then it got more and more and I realised it was the weed some of them were smoking.

I have no idea why people do it but everyone that does it smells like cat piss and that’s enough of a reason to put me off.

HateJudgmentalPeople · 29/08/2021 09:53

Yes ffs! What part of my message aren’t you reading?! How many fucking times do I have to explain to you what I meant before you get it?! Ffs

BrentfordBee · 29/08/2021 09:54

@WorraLiberty

Honestly, I think if someone could invent something to mix with the weed that cancels out the smell, no-one would worry about it.
Yes. We had a dealer living next door for a while, which was awful because there was constant drama with various interesting visitors and criminal acts against him and other neighbours. He was crap at it and not very discreet. So am very much in favour of legalisation to avoid this sort of scenario.

But the smell is something else. Genuinely struggling to think of a smell I dislike more, and I admit I’m dreading a world where even more people smoke it.

Calm down. You made a horrible comment, aimed at a poster who is clearly struggling.

I noticed your username and questioned it.
You clearly don't like it.

OrlandointheWilderness · 29/08/2021 09:57

The biggest issue for weed smoking to me is the bloody smell! I don't generally waft my pint of cider under the noses of people who don't want to drink it, yet when I want to walk my dog I have to escort my ten year old child through disgusting clouds of weed smoke!
I have absolutely no problem with it - tbh I dont even care enough to have an opinion on it really, apart from the smell.

HateJudgmentalPeople · 29/08/2021 09:57

I never ever smoke it outside because of the reasons with the smell and tbh I rarely smoke fags outside now either because I feel that there aren’t many smokers these days compared to non smokers and I have lots of kids where I stay so don’t like to be being smoke when I walk past them.

I’m very lucky in that my neighbour smokes weed too and so he won’t complain if he can smell it on my landing as it’s only his abs Is landing but I’ve now started to put a towel down at my door so the smoke doesn’t seep out, it’s just something I do in my own home, or on the beach if I’m in my wee hiding location where nobody but me goes, I’ve did that lots in the summer, bliss.Grin

georgarina · 29/08/2021 09:58

@vegas888 you really have no idea how PTSD works and should probably stop commenting on it. PTSD is a stress reaction - it doesn't care that other people have it harder. That's like saying "I don't believe you were in hospital with a chest infection when some people have AIDS and cancer." And someone can go through something "worse" and not get it, then get it later for something seemingly less bad (which is what happened to me).

@Thetepidstepper totally agree on the weed issue. I hate it, and hate how it's become not only acceptable but seen as totally harmless and even a kind of cure-all. I had a similar experience with weed (not laced) as a teenager - I was in psychosis for three days. So scary. One person I know who has always been a heavy user now has schizophrenia. It can do serious damage.

userxx · 29/08/2021 09:59

Wow!
I can't believe there are people like you still but then boom - just like that you appear.
You do know it's 2021 dear?[/quote]

People like what? Questioning PTSD from smoking a joint? C'mon it's a fair enough question.

THisbackwithavengeance · 29/08/2021 10:01

I think its disingenuous to liken habitual weed smoking to people drinking alcohol socially.

Most people drink a glass of wine or a beer a few times a week or on special occasions. They don't get up, open up a tinny and then spend the rest of the day drinking. Or if they do, they are called alcoholics and have an illness.

If you buy weed from dealers then you are funding criminal gangs and human traffickers including child traffickers.

Katiebee008 · 29/08/2021 10:03

It doesn't bother me too much although I don't smoke it. My upstairs neighbour does and I often get a whiff through my windows of an evening but it doesn't linger. My boyfriend smokes it, anywhere between one or three small joints a night although he is trying to cut down. I think the reasons it doesn't bother me is that he holds down a decent job and is financially very secure, mortgage free etc and ensures he only smokes outside, washes afterwards and cleans his teeth. He never smokes when he comes to mine or out in public.

But this is the sort of Mumsnet myth I keep reading - that dope smokers spend all day getting off their heads on dope.

Of course some do (just like the alcohol scenario you describe), but more often than not, most people just seem to roll themselves small cigarette sized joints and smoke them sporadically throughout the day, or just to relax in the evenings.

In the same way some people might have a glass of wine with lunch and then one or two in the evening.

This is how normal it has become and people from all walks of life seem to be using it in this way.

@brittleheadgirl
I find you patronising and rude!

PicsInRed · 29/08/2021 10:08

@Siracha

I have noticed people are just willy nilly smoking it as they walk the streets like a cigarette
Same, and coming from NZ where weed is REALLY common but heavily enforced by police and therefore not smoked openly on the street...I find it totally bizarre that people are doing exactly as you say, smoking it openly on the street

What I do know is that the UK is potentially going to end up with a mental health crisis e.g. increased incidence of schizophrenia if this tend continues.

Plumtree391 · 29/08/2021 10:08

It doesn't smell like cats' piss to me (& I've had elderly cats). I quite like the smell. It's all a matter of taste. I'm sorry the one poster had such a terrible reaction first time, it must have been really strong stuff to do that but surely would wear off.

I've always found smoking a joint quite pleasant.

What about those who grow and use it for medical purposes.
