Why is everyone smoking weed now?

I mean it's everywhere. My neighbour smokes it and stinks the block out with it. In addition I smell it very often just round and about, coming from people's gardens and in pubs and that.

I don't like it because I had a massive anxiety attack first and only time I smoked weed and it left me with PTSD, I mean it was severe. According to my therapist this is actually quite common. I mean therapists know that weed is nasty stuff that makes people feel bad, quite a lot of the time.

But still people are smoking it. And cops are turning a blind eye obviously.

I wish it was legalised really so that these stinky people would have to fit fans and vents and the like.

But until that happens loads of people are at it even though it makes them be boring cunts. Why!

Like most drugs, it's fun and it feels nice.

FindingMeno · 29/08/2021 01:10

I don't like it. I don't like the smell, and when I smell it I'm figuring I'm breathing it in.
I'm generally live and let live otherwise though.

Thetepidstepper · 29/08/2021 01:11

I don't think people have off the scale reactions to alcohol that make them think that they're really dead and they've invented everyone around them and nobody else knows the truth and they need telling urgently.

I've spoken to the stinky neighbour loads; sometimes he denies it, other times he says he'll put his kitchen vent on. We're all in a housing association so I don't want to be a cunt and make some guy precarious housing wise and honestly it's obvious his life is a bit shit with the way he never goes anywhere and just gets stoned all the time so again I don't want to make it worse, but it's just not very nice.

*I couldn't disagree more to be honest.

I live in a very poor London borough and weed is definitely the most common choice over alcohol, as it's much cheaper and as a PP said, alcohol isn't really that popular with youngsters anymore. Well nowhere near as much as years gone by.*

Interesting. I'm out in the sticks so it's a bit of a reversal out here. The only people you ever see in and outside of the pubs are the local tradies etc. Hippies tend to get stoned at home instead.

LoveFall · 29/08/2021 01:45

In Canada it is legal and has been for a few years. Honestly, I have not seen or smelled more pot smoking than before.

The only exception is that there is a guy who sits in the little green space across from our building and chain smokes cigarettes with the odd stinky pot in between.

Thetepidstepper · 29/08/2021 01:57

Maybe Canada is a more socially flat society?

Because really it's the neds in neddy areas where use has shot up ime. When I smell it here I think there's a guy with no job and an attitude problem, and usually I'm right.

But maybe in Canada it's different. Is it?

OP posts:
LoveFall · 29/08/2021 02:34

I don't know if Canada is different. I have never thought we were much different than England really and I am fairly comfortable saying that as DH is English and my DS, his wife and two grandkids live there. I have spent quite a lot of time in England. I love it.

It might be my neighborhood, or it may be that legalization did not spike usage because the law was ignored anyway. It could also be that smoking of any kind is very frowned upon now and people buy edibles instead.

I have never been a user. I tried it twice as a 20 something but it made my heart race so I didn't try it again. But I know many people who have smoked it for decades.

Themeparklover · 29/08/2021 02:36

I hope it is legalised, if it is I hope to open a regulated and legal dispensary for those with dr's prescriptions of medical conditions. I think you would be surprised of how many medical conditions it helps and is non lethal in overdose.

LoveFall · 29/08/2021 02:36

I do think it may be more socially acceptable than alcohol now.

HirplesWithHaggis · 29/08/2021 02:37

Would your neighbour be amenable to using a weed vape rather than smoking spiffs? They can be bought for around £30, use "bud" (actually the flowers, but probably what he's smoking if it stinks) and don't smell, so wouldn't affect you.

Themeparklover · 29/08/2021 02:38

I'm trying to be polite but clearly you didn't smoke just 'weed' it was quite evidently laced with something hence why it needs to be regulated and legalised.
Thetepidstepper · 29/08/2021 02:45

Naw it was just weed. Fucked my entire life up though, that's the truth. I know that's not a nice message. I don't care.

OP posts:
Thetepidstepper · 29/08/2021 02:47

But yeah agree it needs to be legalized and legislated for. Need some way of keeping the neds and losers under control so they're not fucking things up for everyone else.

OP posts:
Yellowbowlbanana · 29/08/2021 06:18

I agree with you OP. People minimise weed so much. I used to smoke a lot whilst at uni. It made me lazy and anxious.
I now work with vulnerable adults and there is a huge incidence of MH problems and cannabis use. My experience is anecdotal but there seems an obvious, clear pattern.

grapewine · 29/08/2021 06:28

Life is shit for a lot of people. Some have gin or wine several times a week and some smoke weed. If it didn't smell, many wouldn't care.

Whatever gets you through at this point, honestly.

newnortherner111 · 29/08/2021 07:33

Police have limited resources, in London largely because of reduced numbers brought about by the previous Mayor, Mr Johnson.

Nandakanda · 29/08/2021 08:08

Speaking as a former semi-regular smoker, it seems the strength has greatly increased over the years, and that related psychotic episodes have increased too. Drug-induced psychosis seem to be very common among the psychotics l meet - one of the results of the increase in popularity.

The op’s experiences do not surprise me at all - this is very powerful stuff for a first time smoker.

I don’t drink, smoke or anything these days, and feel much better as a result.

GiveMeAUserName123 · 29/08/2021 08:11

It’s just stinks though doesn’t it. Like cats piss!

HurryUpAndWait23 · 29/08/2021 08:18

It's because no one can get hold of solids/puff/whatever you're region or age calls it.

And to be honest, when you think of the damage alcohol does, I think it's the lesser of two evils.

It's not my cup of tea though. I have always liked the smell!

Deathraystare · 29/08/2021 08:24

Like most drugs, it's fun and it feels nice.

Until suddenly it isn't fun anymore. Like for my friend whose son was a regular user and ended up waving an axe around, threatening everyone and ended up in a psych ward.

I work in psychiatry albeit on the reception desk but see and smell enough weed users almost on a daily basis being escorted on to the unit.

Miseryl · 29/08/2021 08:32

I couldn't care less what consenting adults choose to put in their bodies (illegal or legal) unless it impacts on me, so yes if the smell was coming into my home regularly that would annoy me.

Positivelypatient · 29/08/2021 08:32

Ugh yes my next door neighbour... we have conjoined porches and the smell seeps through into mine. Sometimes when i open my internal front door its unbearable. I worry that the postie thinks it's me... have to keep my porch window open all day to let the stink out.

What's worse is that it's just a mum, 2 teen DD and primary aged DS. I wonder if the little DS goes to school smelling of weed. I think its the mum and DDs that smoke it.

Absolutely rank smell and I don't thin it should be legalised. Its a gateway drug to harder stuff.

QueenAdreena · 29/08/2021 08:36

I used to be a weekend weed smoker, and probably still would be if I hadn’t had children. I’ve always had awful reactions to alcohol and can’t bear the taste anyway, whereas smoking a small roll up on a Friday and Saturday evening at the end of my garden to relax was a pleasure. It was enjoyable and social amongst my friends, no one got rowdy/abusive, I wasn’t sick, I didn’t have a hangover the next day, it was the perfect relaxant. Personally, I had no addiction issues, I never tried anything ‘harder’ as a result and had no problem giving it up when the time came either.

I know that’s not everyone’s experience, but it’s not fair to lump everyone in together. Personally, I see much more anti social behaviour in our town due to drinkers than weed smokers.

Farwest · 29/08/2021 08:39

Smoking is antisocial. Smoking anything where some unwilling victim will have to breathe it in, have their clothes and carpets and curtains stink of it - it's just fucking antisocial. Sorry it's happening to you, OP.
