Anyone in hospital/been in hospital recently and has pictures of their meals? Let's compare!

Here's the roast dinner I was given when I was having DD last month. I couldn't cut the slices of beef with a knife and fork because I was breastfeeding and only had one arm free so I ate with my left hand Blush

And of course, the obligatory tea and toast.

Cheese and onion pie
Pink bowl is jam roly poly and custard
Ice cream
Orange juice
Mug of tea (there were two)
Bread roll
Yoghurt
Cake

Apparently if you like the food, they REALLY feed you Grin I also got hot chocolate with cream at 3am (I can't sleep after GA)

I was in with influenza A about 4 years ago. I felt grim but I'm a massive foodie and never lost my appetite. The mushroom soup was inedible, like mushroom jelly. I thought I was playing it safe with the veg pasta but nope! Completely awful. I couldn't even keep it on my table it was knocking me sick. I stuck to the cornflakes.

I work on maternity in the same hosp and the food is lovely! They're all ready meal style but they smell and taste delicious and there's loads to choose from. The puddings are also nice.

I’ve had mixed experiences of hospital food. The worst is always the day of admission when you get whatever the previous occupant ordered. Once I got a plate of carrots and a satsuma. It was very ... orange!
I think one problem is the fact that if you are in a long time it tends to be a week (2 if lucky) rolling menu, so you could keep track of the day by the dinner.

The funniest i had was after I’d been chatting to an hca about the sandwiches. They were always just one ingredient. So ham. Cheese. Tuna. I’d said to her that I really missed tuna and cucumber. She told me to just write it on the menu and I’d get it. When it turned up my sandwich came in it’s usual 2 triangles, one had just tuna, the other just cucumber. That kept me chuckling to myself for days! (To be fair hospitals are pretty dull places!)

I'm worried about the hospital food! I'm due next month and I'm vegan I don't know what they will serve me!
And it's my 2nd so I'm gutted about the tea and toast I will have to take some vegan butter and my favorite milk in Grin

Had my daughter 40 years ago...you ordered on day one what you wanted on day 2. For day one you got what ever the person previously in your bed had ordered the day before. This was way before different diets were catered for.

I really hate gravy, so I would hate some of the food

BastardMonkfish · 22/08/2021 21:31

@LakesLover

One of those pictures is lasagna, mash and baked beans. Very Italian.
Bellissimo 👌🏻

I’ve given birth in three different hospitals, all with varying standards when it comes to meals…

The first hospital was particularly memorable as I had ordered jacket potato with beans and cheese. Apparently they had run out of beans and cheese so I was just given the jacket potato…ended up eating it like an apple as I was so ravenous and also trying to get to grips with breastfeeding DC1.

Second hospital…the food was fantastic. Loved their cheese and potato pie and their lentil shepherds pie in particular.

Third hospital…their hot meals were okay, but their salads always looked old and grey.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/08/2021 21:32

None of those meals look appetising, and I like gravy.

DP works in the music industry and is on a facebook group called crap crew catering, sharing their experiences of food providers who haven't heard the saying 'an army marches on it's stomach'.

When I was in hospital the food looked absolutely awful BUT tasted so much better. We can't complain though, it's free and they're doing their best. The tea and toast in the mornings with rice crispies and then the dessert of warm apple sponge with custard was amaaaazing.

Did they have to roll you out of hospital when you were better Grin

I've had four hospital stays in the last two years. OK food: ham sandwich, porridge, penne with tomato sauce, beef lasagne. Terrible: toast, coffee, tea, ice-cream. Most of the time I was hardly eating, so I didn't get to sample the whole menu.

NotMyCat · 22/08/2021 21:37

@BastardMonkfish I live alone so anything that's cooked for me I treat like a top restaurant Grin
They kept turning up with two mugs of tea and asking if I could manage "a little jam slice or some Victoria sponge"
I did eat that entire lot in the photo 2hrs after waking up and got side eye off the nurse who said most people are nauseous

Millionaireinthemaking · 22/08/2021 21:37

Can someone actually tell me what those yellow squares was I had? 🤣

No photos, but I had a magnificent cottage pie last time I stayed in. I’ve actually tried to recreate this thing many times at home since and failed miserably!

MumsWordRules · 22/08/2021 21:42

This is what a family member was served a few years ago. My stomach still churns looking at it 🤢

HappyWipings · 22/08/2021 21:44

When I was in hospital a few years ago I had the most amazing sticky toffee pudding with custard. I couldn't eat much of it as my meds were making me nauseous , my husband was happy to step in though.

SimonJT · 22/08/2021 21:44

I had to stay in a few years ago due to a ruptured appendix, I can’t have dairy, kiwi or strawberry. My first three meals after being nil by mouth for 12 hours were plain white bread and these little pots of orange juice, I’m a type 1 diabetic! Even if you were given the food ordered it wasn’t possible to get anywhere near your five a day, you’d think the diet of ill people would be a priority, especially in older patients.

I discharged myself early, my first proper meal was amazing.

Couldn't fault my hospitals dinners. Chicken Balti with chips and rice! The puddings were just like old fashioned school dinner ones! Delish! I was gutted to miss supper on Friday as it was mixed grill!
