Anyone in hospital/been in hospital recently and has pictures of their meals? Let's compare!

Here's the roast dinner I was given when I was having DD last month. I couldn't cut the slices of beef with a knife and fork because I was breastfeeding and only had one arm free so I ate with my left hand Blush

And of course, the obligatory tea and toast.

I was in hospital for a week last month but I felt crap and so I didn't use my phone or think about taking photos of my food.

I had a caesarean a few months ago to have my twins, and I stayed in hospital just over a week after the operation. The food was generally pretty good, lots of school dinner type meals. I loved the puddings, which mostly consisted of some type of sponge cake with custard. There were some meals where I really didn't fancy anything, so I just had a cheese sandwich on those occasions.

Here are a few photos. The lentil curry was the first meal I had after my caesarean. It was delicious!

I've had a few stays in the same hospital and had different experiences each time, with my appendicitis I was put in a side room and forgotten about so after being nil by mouth for 48 hours (operation kept being pushed back) I eventually got a packet of Crisps. When I had an ectopic pregnancy I actually don't remember the food at all but I do remember a wonderful woman who I think was a HCA holding my hand and wiping my tears trying to encourage me to eat something Blush, after having my eldest was born the tea and toast was the best thing I have ever eaten but the food for the rest of the 4 days was gross and there wasn't much choice but then with my youngest there was loads of choice and the food was great the all day breakfast was brilliant....but I was nil by mouth for 24 hours after she was born and was only allowed something like 30ml of water every hour very carefully measured with a syringe so I appreciated the food.

I'm worried about the hospital food! I'm due next month and I'm vegan I don't know what they will serve me! And it's my 2nd so I'm gutted about the tea and toast I will have to take some vegan butter and my favorite milk in Grin
Don’t panic you’ll get Flora and soya milk

I had been sick/nauseous for the entire pregnancy and it suddenly vanished part way through labour.

I was exactly same with DD. She's 17 next month and I can still remember the roast pork dinner I had on the day I was taken in to be induced. It was the first time I'd managed to eat cooked veg since I did the pregnancy test.

My late dad spent 7 weeks in hospital in early 2019. The food was adequate rather than spectacular but some of it was good, and actually the pureed meals were particularly impressive. There was plenty of choice when he was able to manage more solid food too.

I must admit I wasn't convinced that the staffing was adequate for him to get the help he need to eat though (4 broken vertebrae and a cracked rib so horizontal and then in a full back brace). Fortunately I work near the hospital so was able to re-jig my hours so I could go in for lunch and dinner and feed him.

I was last in hospital years ago and it was a bit rank tbh, I absolutely loved breakfast though and took a bit of everything on offer. It took me ages to get through it Grin.
My Dad was in hospital for 4 weeks last month, he has cancer and no appetite until he went onto steroids and started eating everything in sight. His favourite was the curry and cake and custard. He was disappointed one day to realise the potatoes with the dinner was roasties, he'd ordered something different. Because they were anxious for him to eat he was given a big bowl of roast potatoes too.
The day I picked him up to come home he had ordered cottage pie, it was like a burnt offering.

I had a lovely curry when I was having my daughter in January. Tasted like heaven after working so hard!

I'd have rolled the beef up and used my teeth. I'd object more to the peas. Round buggers, they are.

Oceanblue042 · 23/08/2021 00:19

These are some of the meals I had whilst in the maternity ward at a NW hospital. Wasn't too bad actually. Roast pork dinner, some sort of chicken curry with jacket potato, sausages and mash.... That first and last pic show the menus for that day 😊

I had my boys with 2 different hospitals, in the days before smartphones. First was boring but tasty - lots of "plain food" all smothered with instant gravy. Second was dire. I did attend that hospital regularly as an outpatient, a few years later, and the food in the canteen was much nicer.

My mum was in hospital in another part of the country, recently, and the food was dire. She ordered a veggie menu, as she's pescstarian. One day, they didn't have the egg sarnie she ordered for lunch, so they gave her ham, instead.

@saraclara

Barnsley hospital, late December 1999. I slipped on the ice and broke my wrist. While I was sat on a bed in A&E waiting to be plastered up, I went really shakey, and someone decided I was going into shock and needed feeding (it was mid-morning and I hadn't had breakfast). They brought me the best hot buttered toast I've ever had in my life. The perfect colour, the perfect half melted butter, and the best, perfect strength mug of tea. I still remember it. A Michelin starred restaurant couldn't have done it better.
Sometimes I wonder if nurses and midwives are taught at uni about making toast. When to produce the toast, how to make the perfect toast. And do they realise before qualifying how much of their time will be spent making toast? Do they ever get fed up of the smell of toast?

Can any hospital workers clarify for me please Grin

Oh yes forgot toast! This wasn't an admission, I just had to hang about after a medication for a few hours in case of anaphylactic reaction. It was early so they gave me toast and two brews

@Woolver23

I'd be interested to see what vegetarians are offered
My first night in hospital I got veg soup and a stale cheese sandwich, the following day cold toast which was way over done for me so I had a couple of mouthfuls and left it. Then because I hadn't gone onto the ward until 11:30 that night and wasn't given a menu to choose from I ended up with dry roast potatoes and stuffing, the veg didn't appeal and they weren't sure if the gravy was vegetarian or not. The 3rd day my exH fetched in a margarita pizza from Pizza Hut. The next 3 days seriously ill couldn't lift my head more than an inch so didn't eat much apart from a couple of Kitkats and watsits once my morphine kicked in and then I spent most of the day throwing everything back up. Lived on coffee to try and help the post lumbar puncture headaches I was getting. Final night in hospital and still unable to sit up my Mum had to feed me tomato soup by dipping little pieces of bread inside it and the next day a lovely cheese and onion flan with chips and beans which would've been lovely had they let me eat it whilst it was hot. I had to wait because we discovered the reason why I had spent 7 days constantly throwing up everywhere was because they hadn't told me the painkillers and anti sickness tablets should be spaced out by 20 mins and I was taking them together so the sickness ones weren't working. In all fairness the food there isn't that bad, I've had it up in the hospital restaurant a few times when I've gone for appointments and to visit people. It used to be absolutely shite though until James Martin came in and devised a new menu with them. There was a tv show years ago about it

In hospital last week with my toddler and was confused the mini pot of orange juice they provided him with. Should it have come with a straw? Do you drink it from the tony pot or do you pour it into a cup and then drink?

IncyWincyGrownUp · 23/08/2021 00:58

I don’t know about nurses, @BastardMonkfish, but my son goes to a special school, and most classrooms have a toaster hidden in the store cupboard. Many a trauma is solved with judiciously applied toast :o

When my youngest was in hospital at a month old, they always forgot to feed me (breastfeeding, so supposed to have three meals a day) but I was always on the tea round. Those cups of tea were a blessing. I managed with a snack bag and a daily run to the canteen for ten days.

Nelia5 · 23/08/2021 01:03

A grey dry Pork chop and potato croquettes was the worst. After that meal the ladies on my ward let me into a secret, always order food with a sauce or gravy, that way you don’t end up with a plate of fry food. Also order from the Indian or Caribbean menu if you are sick of bland food. I followed that advice and had lovely meals for the remainder of my 2 week stay.

Bloody hell, that pork chop Shock

Voicefancier · 23/08/2021 01:20

My 85yo mother with dementia went into hospital for 3 days. I thought she'd be traumatised. I rang to see speak to her but she declined to speak to me because she was eating her tea. She said it was nicer meals than she gets at home...which I blinking cook for her! Cheek. She was really happy with the food.

Emmelina · 23/08/2021 09:41

Blimey, that pork chop isn’t dinner, that’s a weapon. Perfect for frisbeeing across the ward to stop others from snoring.
I wonder with a little tweaking if you could make it boomerang back? Grin

I had THE BEST hospital food after having my daughter 10 years ago. My midwife found out that it was also my birthday and said she needed to find me some cake to celebrate. She came back with this full sized cake from the kitchens that we shared with the other midwives. it tasted amazing after a 3 day labour! I think it actually made me cry as it was so kind, plus I was also a little confused that there was just a spare full sized cake lying around!!

I actually like hospital food. And airplane food. All the food that people moan about, I like.

I was kicked out 12 hours after my c section last summer. I’d just had sausage casserole and the lady had just come round with dinner options and I chose a lamb roast and apple crumble.

I was most put out that I would be missing dinner when they turfed me out.
