Why is the Green Party not more popular?

I mean if there were ever a time that they should be relevant it's now, no?

Was talking to the DC about political parties and they asked why people weren't supporting the Green Party because of global warming.

I wanted to reply "Because people want what they've got" but resisted the urge to make a trite reply.

Wondered what other people thought? For myself I'm actually seriously considering moving my support to the Green Party but the ultimate concern is that the voting system that we have means that they're fighting a losing battle.

I voted Green for many years then they got elected in my home town and I cannot apogise enough for the utter shit show. Then they let the likes of Aimee Challoner make and drive policies and now I have no one but the Tories left to vote for or not vote which shames me more.

HarryBoa · 23/08/2021 09:33

@C8H10N4O2 no, and I'm not making an argument I'm asking a question. It does feel sometimes as though we call other parties out for things that we allow the Tories a pass on.

@GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman, yes good point although to be fair the last female leader they promoted to the top was treated appallingly by her party and blocked from doing anything useful. It was worrying how that was then reported in the media.

It feels as though media reporting - and selective media reporting - plays a big part in people's opinions. I wonder how many people are as well informed as the people on this thread.

@HarryBoa

I suppose the other thing I find interesting is that we seem to hold all other parties to account to a level that we don't the Tories. It sometimes feels as though they're forgiven anything and everything.
Really? There’s masses of anti Tory views on mumsnet.

I wonder what the answer is then. All I can see is years and years of us saying "They're all awful". We can't condemn our children to a lifetime of trying to choose "the least worst option". Surely that means that the model needs a rethink?

I completely agree. More and more news reporting is there to sell a view, not present a balanced selection of the facts to allow readers/ viewers to form their own views.

I have become incredibly cynical over the past ten years.

I'm not depending on "media reporting" so the "MSM are all evil and you sheeples are stupid" line is wasted on me.

I have direct experience of both parties and a lifetime of activism behind me and I find your attempts to deflect onto the Tories and dismiss quite serious points as media smears very telling.

MasterGland · 23/08/2021 09:48

The answer, if you live in the UK, is to move to an upland area. I don't mean this to sound alarmist, but it is just the way things are going to be. We are incapable of preventing climate change, we need to learn to live with it.

C8H10N4O2 · 23/08/2021 09:51

Oh and some of the misogynoir experienced with the Greens was even worse that Labour at its militant peak.

PickUpAPepper · 23/08/2021 09:52

Yes it needs a total rethink. It’s needed it for years! But the motivation and tools need to come from the top, and it needs to rebuild from the bottom starting with what is practically achievable for people at the bottom.

And that’s why it’s doomed. You need wealth to get anywhere. Not just figuratively either, transportation is a mess and geographical mobility has stalled.

Fact is Britain is a third world country with no infrastructure and what few communications are left are controlled by a bunch of mindless, highly egotistical, well-off people who have never had to face real practical constraints on what they can achieve, ever, and who are best served by maintaining the illusory ideology about nobody else being constrained either. Thus they block anyone who is and maintain and increase vast inequality. People at the top get there by exploiting people at the bottom and ensuring they have no real options. It’s how empires have always worked.

LynetteScavo · 23/08/2021 10:04

Because people don't want what the Green Party propose.

I don't judge the greens based on MSM reporting I judge them on their own actions. The challenor situation was entirely of their own making, they were warned, and the people who tried to flag this as a problem were silenced by one of the women now standing as co leader.
The other prospective co leader is on video nodding along while their wife describes women who are concerned about sex based protections as floating turds.

DevonTF · 23/08/2021 10:39

You are assuming that we are not intelligent enough, or have undertaken enough of our own research to make an informed opinion.

Suggesting we don't judge the Tories or just listen to the media reporting is insulting.

We know what is happening - we know how women are viewed.

We know what the Greens think of us.
We know what Labour think of us.
We know what the SNP think of us
We know what the LibDems think of us - they have a document full of reasons to keep us down and quiet.

SpindleWhorl · 23/08/2021 10:54

For balance, we also know what some Tories think of us, too, including Cabinet Members like Penny Mordaunt and Committee Chairs like Maria Miller.

It's scary to think that if Liz Truss wasn't holding the line, we'd have been fucked by now.

CBUK22 · 23/08/2021 11:01

@C8H10N4O2 - I love how the idea that we live in a patriarchy has become such a strong idiom that you state it without question, the belief is sacrosanct and must not be questioned.

It's exactly the same level/type of indoctrination which feminists are not pushing back about the trans issues about.

roarfeckingroarr · 23/08/2021 11:10

Because of their anti-women policies

Well I'm talking about the uk. Significant gender pay gap, women disadvantaged in healthcare, maternity still one of the commonest causes of women losing their jobs, rape is now largely a punishment free crime, misogyny not a hate crime despite sex being a protected characteristic, male violence just within relationships resulting in a domestic murders at the rate of two a week never mind survived abuse. I could go on.

All of the above are compounded further by ethnicity and class.

I wouldn't exactly call that a matriarchy

I cannot abide Boris, and I disagree with a lot of Tory policies, but they do at least know what women are.

Yes they are busy screwing women and children in every way they can but at least they know the biological sex of who theyre screwing over right? Fucking idiocy on this site at times Hmm

TheMarzipanDildo · 23/08/2021 11:29

I’ve joined the party and I’ll vote for them if Shahrar Ali gets in.

FWIW, I could never vote for the Tories for many, many reasons beyond their stance on women’s rights.

AlfonsoTheMango · 23/08/2021 11:45

Adding my voice to those who said "because the Greens hate women".

Rainbowshit · 23/08/2021 11:48

How can anyone take them seriously when they believe humans can change sex? When they call women non-men? When they protect the likes of Aimee Challenor? When they oust good men like Andy Wightman?

So I'm am idiot for disagreeing with their policies...?

Not sure of your reasoning there, bud. Given that the other three parties named are hugely screwing over the female sex by being terribly keen to wipe out our sex-based rights.

At a local level they are so anti-car and anti-lorries they make life more difficult for ordinary families at every turn.
Many of us live in suburbs, every day each family is faced with journeys to school and work at a fixed time. I say they should realise that this and plan for:-
Four people being needing to get to Four destinations between 7.30
and 9.00am.
They will all need to carry bags and bundles
They all need to be smart not in old jeans or wet trackies.
The convenient way to achieve this is by one or two cars.

Don't penalise us by phasing traffic lights to slow traffic down and cause blocks.
Instead of cycle ways that are not used give us more bus routes and some bus lanes.
