Why is the Green Party not more popular?

I mean if there were ever a time that they should be relevant it's now, no?

Was talking to the DC about political parties and they asked why people weren't supporting the Green Party because of global warming.

I wanted to reply "Because people want what they've got" but resisted the urge to make a trite reply.

Wondered what other people thought? For myself I'm actually seriously considering moving my support to the Green Party but the ultimate concern is that the voting system that we have means that they're fighting a losing battle.

because they're for open borders -

FourTeaFallOut · 23/08/2021 13:01

Aimee Challenger and the not-men bullshit, plus they were quite clear they didn't want the gender critical likes of me to vote for them.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 23/08/2021 13:01

Yes they are busy screwing women and children in every way they can but at least they know the biological sex of who theyre screwing over right? Fucking idiocy on this site at times hmm

It’s really not idiocy. Language is essential to form laws and protections for vulnerable groups. If the descriptors of those vulnerable groups become meaningless then there are no laws to protect them.
If anyone can be a woman, then women can no longer be a vulnerable group and can’t be protected in law.

Challenor - my autocorrect doesn't even like the name.

Dragongirl10 · 23/08/2021 13:06

Because they have no good policies other than green issues.

Ingridla · 23/08/2021 13:06

Because they're a bunch of cranks, basically.

HaroldMeeker · 23/08/2021 13:26

Aimee Challenor, the party's hatred of females and sneering dismissal of our concerns, their utter refusal to listen to anything but their own farts in their echo chamber. They're not alone, and I have absolutely nobody that I can vote for any more. I've been silenced. Censored. Pushed aside. Ignored. Deemed unworthy of consideration, unworthy of a space at the table, of being considered human, because I was born female. I see no difference with most of the parties, to be fair, but the greens are supposed to be science led. I have been disposed of, my vote is not wanted. I've never felt less represented in my life.

Snookie00 · 23/08/2021 13:27

It’s impossible to take a party seriously when they have such a misunderstanding of basic science. How can we believe any of their messages/ policies when they purposefully misinterpret biology to fit their political ideology? Party seems to be full of misogynistic white men using their particular brand of green politics to bully others. Such a shame.

And that’s before we even go into the green consumer issue which @MasterGland has summed up well. Making middle class people feel better by forcing us all to consume more expensive green products.

safariboot · 23/08/2021 14:02

Not read the whole thread.

People think they won't win and it's a wasted vote.

The major parties now say the same environmental messages. Which the Green Party could fairly claim some of the credit for.

The Greens are no longer a single-issue party. They've become a general left-wing and "woke" party and that puts people off, like the millions who disagree with their stance on women's rights.

Even their environmental messages could be argued with. For example opposition to nuclear power in our fossil-fuel-created climate emergency.

MaMelon · 23/08/2021 14:19

People think they won't win and it's a wasted vote

Quite the opposite here - 1.3% share of the vote and they’re in a power sharing coalition Angry

ididitsocanyou · 23/08/2021 14:23

I wld vote green but a put off by identity politics, their desire to erase womanhood and the fact that last time I looked they stood for open boarders and unchecked immigration.

APurpleSquirrel · 23/08/2021 14:50

Aside from the issues mentioned up thread about GC, for me, I do agree with some of their ideas but as others have said they don't live in the real world, especially one where there is little to no public transport so cars are essential. One of their manifestos contained promises to increase the cost of petrol/diesel etc to encourage people to use the car less. How is that helpful or practical in areas where there is literally no public transport?
Saying they'd spend the increased revenue on building new public transport infrastructure is useless as it's takes so long. You can't magic up new trains; train lines; buses; drivers etc overnight. In rural & semi-rural areas this is a major issue & for that alone many people here wouldn't vote for them.

teawamutu · 23/08/2021 14:54

I joined to vote for Shahrar Ali because I'm truly sick of spoiling my ballot. If he wins and manages to get them to realise what a woman is, I'll vote for them. If not, I'm out.

Don't respect my sex, don't expect my X.

Most people care more about the here and now than the long term future of the planet. They also care more about money.
