I'm off to town today to check a dormant account.

I've had a letter from Santander to say I have q dormant Instant Saver account so I am heading into town to find out how much is in there.

Anyone want to help guess?

For background, I opened the account over 15 years ago and at that time was earning about £28k.

I drove a new car and saved up enough to travel the world, but what is left in this forgotten account.

Did I stash a cheeky grand. Or £100 to open it. Or is it empty or maybe containing £4.36.

I'm quite excited.

What do you all think?

You're not just going to town to check the account are you OP?

Going by this thread, the money in the account is unlikely to cover the bus fare for you all let alone school shoes and foreign holidays.

Howmanysleepsnow · 20/08/2021 12:07

£1.89. I’ll take chocolate as my prize please!

Prompted by something in the media, or possibly on MSE, I thought I'd check a building society where I knew I'd had a savings account at one time.

Went into a branch with ID - couldn't find the passbook - and they were very helpful. I eventually got a cheque for less than £2 and letter confirming that they were closing the account. Hey ho.

Abraxan · 20/08/2021 12:11

We had one for a while. Iirr it had less than a tenner left in it when we got round to closing it. It had been opened for a specific reason, used and then just left and forgotten about as it wasn't our main bank accounts.

We did 'accidentally' sign up for a wine account once though. When Dh did eventually follow it up after ignoring calls etc we had about £500 of wine money to use :) That was quite nice to discover. We still pay into now but do use it regularly as well!

Definitely pennies, quite simply because you will have known about it at one time, couldn't be arsed to traipse into town and close it because it was in a passbook and cost more to get there than was in it.

So you left it, for years, and forgot how little it had in it.

Following because I am invested in the result! haha

Gonna guess £38.97

icedcoffees · 20/08/2021 12:12

This happened to me once. I had a grand total of £2.08 in there - I spent it on an ice-cream Grin

DoubleTweenQueen · 20/08/2021 12:12

A couple of hundred at the absolute most.

Hope it’s bit more though!

Bouledeneige · 20/08/2021 12:13

£1.

Thats what I found in my dormant Barclays account. But the hope was fun!

2020nymph · 20/08/2021 12:13

£263.43 Smile

PeaAndHamSoupFromAChicken · 20/08/2021 12:14

I had the same with an instant saver. I opened it in 1988 with £2 then put another £2 in a month after. That £4 sat there until the late 90s when I found my book and went to check. It ended up being just over £10 in there by then. Grin

I'm going to guess generously for you and go for £512.48 but fingers crossed for more.

Mummyme87 · 20/08/2021 12:16

AffableApple · 20/08/2021 12:16

Is this like guess the sweets in the jar? If we're the closest, do we get to keep it? Grin

SirVixofVixHall · 20/08/2021 12:17

£232.

Gonnagetgoing · 20/08/2021 12:17

A few years ago, my dad (divorced from my mum for a few years) was speaking to his parents - and his mum told him they'd been putting aside money for me and my DB (as well as other half siblings) for a few years. Didn't expect much as they weren't well off. Turned out we both had £10,000 in some savings account! We were 18 and 16 at the time so didn't touch the money apart from a holiday abroad. Nice surprise especially as my grandad was a miserable old bugger and we hadn't seen them since I was about 5.

Other savings accounts like Post Office etc - checked when I got to a certain age and pennies or a few quid in there!

Gonnagetgoing · 20/08/2021 12:18

I will guess £999.99 on a positive note and £9.99 on a negative one.

ButterflyBitch · 20/08/2021 12:19

£35.18

EllieStartingOver · 20/08/2021 12:20

Oooh I hope it’s a nice surprise for you OP!

Pompom2367 · 20/08/2021 12:20

17.83 is my guess

DifficultBloodyWoman · 20/08/2021 12:20

I’m watching with interest. I wish this would happen to me. Ideally, with enough money for a house. But I dream and then I wake up.

JaneJeffer · 20/08/2021 12:22

£40.01. Make sure they do close it. I had an old account that I had asked to be closed and they forgot and it went into the red because of banking charges so I ended up owing them money!
