I've had a letter from Santander to say I have q dormant Instant Saver account so I am heading into town to find out how much is in there.

Anyone want to help guess?

For background, I opened the account over 15 years ago and at that time was earning about £28k.

I drove a new car and saved up enough to travel the world, but what is left in this forgotten account.

Did I stash a cheeky grand. Or £100 to open it. Or is it empty or maybe containing £4.36.

I'm quite excited.

What do you all think?

@Peanutsandchilli

11p.

Not sure how you forget about a bank account though...

I did, because I thought I had closed it when I did a transfer current account thingy but as it had a tiny bit of credit in they didn't close it. I didn't get paper statements so I ended up with the account for years before they finally closed it. It was only a couple of quid!

Me and DH's dormant account has about £1 in it I think so I'll guess similar to that.

I recently tidied up my dormant accounts (I used to chase all the introductory offers and regular savings accounts but sadly it isn't worth the effort any more - I had £2.5k in a Nationwide current account for a year that earned enough interest to offset about 80% of the interest on my mortgage, happy days).

A few of the banks are fully in the 21st Century and transferred any remaining balances to my current account automatically, although I wish for pennies, they just collect all their dormant account dregs up and donate them to charity.

Anyway, one of the banks insisted on sending me a cheque, which is currently floating round my car for reasons that I don't remember. DP keeps picking it up and asking why I have a cheque for FOURTEEN PENCE floating round my car.

Fingers crossed OP, that you get the school shoes, if not the Carribbean holiday, or at least a takeaway for you all tonight.

Mammyloveswine · 20/08/2021 11:54

Santandar got in touch with me several years after my DF died. I did ask how much it was and got a non committal "relatively small value". I was still so excited. It was £15! I gave it to my DS as my DF would have wanted. I hope it is more than that!
