Is this good enough to give someone as a gift? Genuine opinions please.

I've recently started painting as a hobby. DMIL is so lovely and has been saying how good I am but she sees me as her own child and has that 'everything I do is amazing' attitude that us mums often have about their DC. She's asked me to paint something for her friends birthday in purple to match her bedroom.

I've done it but I don't know if I should give it or not. I think it's very amateur. I dont want to embarrass myself. She won't feel obliged to hang it as its for her bedroom so MIL won't know of she just shoves it under her bed!

Very honest opinions please. (Her name begins with L)

That’s gorgeous Smile
She will be so pleased

morepatiencerequired · 18/08/2021 17:37

Love it! Definitely a great present

Enko · 18/08/2021 17:37

Beautiful i would Appreciate a gift like that

Ponkypig282 · 18/08/2021 17:37

A close up of the 'flowers'. I'm cringing just posting this!

I think it is charming, I'm sure she'll be very pleased.

MotionActivatedDog · 18/08/2021 17:38

It’s beautiful, I’d love it.

Edmontine · 18/08/2021 17:39

Honest opinion?

The flowers are sweet. I’d much prefer them without the initial at the centre. (But obviously other people will feel differently!)

GreyhoundG1rl · 18/08/2021 17:39

Absolutely, it's lovely.

Ponkypig282 · 18/08/2021 17:39

But the close up isn't great. I do think I've got potential but I need much more practice. Will she think I'm an absolute knob for having the nerve to frame it and give it as a gift?! I mean she won't cause she's lovely but that's how I feel.

I wouldn't want it on my own wall 😆

Cringing? You need to give yourself some credit, it’s a really lovely unique gift .

RickOShay · 18/08/2021 17:43

I would definitely have that on my wall

LanisHouseLot · 18/08/2021 17:45

I think the painting is good enough to give as a gift, yes. If she doesn't like it then it would be down to taste rather than your work being too amateur. If I was being super critical I might say the L being left blank looks slightly unfinished and might look nice with some detail, maybe a gilded pattern on something. That's minor though, not a deal breaker in terms of gift suitability.

Is it painted on professional quality paper? That can make the difference between looking good enough to give as a gift Vs not.

HeddaGarbled · 18/08/2021 17:45

I think the flowers are lovely but the completely blank L looks odd. Could the flowers or foliage spill over onto the L a bit? Or the L be decorated in some way?

MoreRainThanAnyYet · 18/08/2021 17:45

Not my taste, but it’s not bad at all.

Arrowheart · 18/08/2021 17:46

It's absolutely beautiful!

Ponkypig282 · 18/08/2021 17:50

Thanks everyone, you've been very kind!

It's on watercolour paper from the works so I don't think you could call that professional paper.

I'll have a think about how to add something to the L.

It's a lovely gift.
I'd be very pleaed to receive it.

Ignore everyone with their 'helpful' how it would be better if...comments.

Ponkypig282 · 18/08/2021 17:51

MoreRainThanAnyYet it's not my taste either 😄

I wouldn’t have it on my wall, but my mother would love it, especially if it was Painted by someone that she knew, and she’d be forever pointing it out “do
You remember Sharon who I used to work
With at Wilson’s, who had the giant poodle, and whose husband ran off with her neighbour, well her daughter Rebecca painted that, isn’t it beautiful?”

CiaoForNiao · 18/08/2021 17:54

I think it's beautiful and would put it on my wall (if my name started with L Grin)

Ponkypig282 · 18/08/2021 17:54

Bimblybomeyelash your mum's birthday isn't next week is it? Linda? 😆

Very pretty, and I was gearing up to politely say it was shit. I'd be happy to receive that.

I wouldn't add anything to the L. Or it'll no longer be recognisable as an L!
EishetChayil · 18/08/2021 17:57

That's absolutely gorgeous! I'd be delighted to receive something like that.

DeadButDelicious · 18/08/2021 17:57

I think that's very nice! Well done you! I'm sure she will love it!
