I've recently started painting as a hobby. DMIL is so lovely and has been saying how good I am but she sees me as her own child and has that 'everything I do is amazing' attitude that us mums often have about their DC. She's asked me to paint something for her friends birthday in purple to match her bedroom.

I've done it but I don't know if I should give it or not. I think it's very amateur. I dont want to embarrass myself. She won't feel obliged to hang it as its for her bedroom so MIL won't know of she just shoves it under her bed!

Very honest opinions please. (Her name begins with L)

Goodness! I like to think that I'm quite arty but I wish I could produce something like that. Have more faith in yourself and your talents. I would be thrilled to get this as a gift.

Ineedmoreguineapigs · 18/08/2021 20:41

I think it's lovely & would leave it as it is.

TheMamaYo · 18/08/2021 20:50

Don’t be daft. It’s gorgeous.

Edmontine · 18/08/2021 20:54

@LadyCatStark

I like it, it’s not my style but it would suit an older lady or a little girl. Surely the whole point of the L is that it has nothing in it, so I wouldn’t do anything to it.
Why would it suit a - did you mean middle aged, or elderly woman, in particular?

Surely, like everything else, it would suit someone who likes that sort of thing?

The flowers and leaves are beautifully rendered, but even without the initial it is absolutely not the sort of thing I would want as a gift. I am probably what you would describe as ‘an older lady’!Grin

Di11y · 18/08/2021 20:55

It's lovely and I'd not touch it. Next time perhaps try a more loopy?

godmum56 · 18/08/2021 21:09

wow i wish i could do that

RoSEbuds6 · 18/08/2021 22:00

I think it’s lovely too.
I love the sound of your MIL by the way, you hear such horror stories on here it’s lovely to hear of a lovely loving MIL.

Knitwit101 · 18/08/2021 22:02

If anyone would like one I'd be happy to post one

Aww that's a lovely offer. Good luck op, I hope you are successful in your painting career

honeybeetheoneandonly · 18/08/2021 22:52

I wouldn't do anything to this one but if you are worried about giving it to DMIL why not do another one with thin outline or ombre background or whatever you want to play with and then let DMIL choose the one she prefers for her friend.

Being honest, the painting isn't to a very high standard although it is very pretty. If my daughter painted it for me I'd love it but it's not high enough quality to charge money for. It's got potential though, I love the idea.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 18/08/2021 23:02

If you fancy doing a C I'd love one for my daughter. I think it's really pretty. You need to believe in yourself.

Megameg56 · 19/08/2021 06:12

My honest opinion: the L is awful and distroys the picture.it is almost as if you wanted to cross out your flowers.have more self confidence and dont self destroy your ability to paint.best wishes

I get that it's not your cup of tea but it's quite a well known trend to have the blank initial

I like it OP, and would absolutely say if I thought it was tat!

Glitterandmud · 19/08/2021 08:49

I think it looks nice, my dsis sells similar at Christmas time locally. Happy to do a craft swap with you if you want to practice.Smile

Milomonster · 19/08/2021 09:11

I’d be absolutely thrilled to receive this as a gift. It’s lovely!

Dogoodfeelgood · 19/08/2021 09:12

I think the blank L is trendy. If you filled it in it would look twee! The flowers are great and it’s absolutely good enough to be a gift.

lifehappened · 19/08/2021 09:18

I got one for my daughter and I thinks it's lovely. Very thoughtful too

stevalnamechanger · 19/08/2021 09:18

Well, op has a buyer ready and waiting. In fact; it's been specially commissioned Smile
Pbbananabagel · 19/08/2021 10:27

It’s beautifully done and totally on trend OP. Anyone’s confused just needs to google minimalist florals Hmm
Would make amazing wedding stationery designs actually

OverweightPidgeon · 19/08/2021 18:30

I’ve just looked at Van Gogh’s sunflowers and that doesn’t look like a very high standard to me , and if I didn’t know it was a masterpiece, I’d say it was a bit rubbish tbh Grin
