I've recently started painting as a hobby. DMIL is so lovely and has been saying how good I am but she sees me as her own child and has that 'everything I do is amazing' attitude that us mums often have about their DC. She's asked me to paint something for her friends birthday in purple to match her bedroom.

I've done it but I don't know if I should give it or not. I think it's very amateur. I dont want to embarrass myself. She won't feel obliged to hang it as its for her bedroom so MIL won't know of she just shoves it under her bed!

Very honest opinions please. (Her name begins with L)

That's so lovely and framing it just completes it as a gift. So thoughtful. No different to knitting something for someone or gifting them homemade jam - do not cringe!! Xx

LadyCatStark · 18/08/2021 19:43

I like it, it’s not my style but it would suit an older lady or a little girl. Surely the whole point of the L is that it has nothing in it, so I wouldn’t do anything to it.

Robinkitty · 18/08/2021 19:45

I really like it, would look perfect in my bedroom actually I would hang it on my wall for sure (wrong initial mind)

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/08/2021 19:46

I think you've definitely got talent. It's not my style but presumably it's to the taste of the person you're painting it for? Definitely good enough to frame and give as a gift!

hamsterfacee · 18/08/2021 19:46

I'd absolutely love one if you're wanting to practice! More than happy to pay Smile it's the kind of style that doesn't need to be 'perfect', it's charming just how it is.

itsgettingwierd · 18/08/2021 19:46

Don't alter it. It's gorgeous as it is.

I can't see any fault with it but the whole idea of personal gifts is also the time taken to do it. No one expects professional - just look8ng good and this more than meets that requirement.

Allusernamesalreadyused · 18/08/2021 19:46

It's really lovely. Well done

1forAll74 · 18/08/2021 19:50

It's good, and pretty, but would have put the initial a bit smaller, in one of the corners of your art work, so as to admire the well painted flowers more. Perhaps sign your signature on the back.

Gingerkittykat · 18/08/2021 19:52

Can I ask for the L stands for?

It's lovely but like others have said the L could do with being softened a bit.

It is suitable for a gift as long as it is the type of thing the giftee will like.

dontgobaconmyheart · 18/08/2021 19:53

It's nice OP, the flowers are very prettily done. I do think the concept is a bit overdone (these things are all over etsy, I also know someone that makes them). I think it would be nicer without the L entirely, although I appreciate this was specifically asked for so not criticising!

Ultimately these things are a matter of personal taste rather than talent aren't they. If I were gifted it (or similar) I wouldn't really want it and wouldn't put it up as it's not in keeping with my decor tastes but that doesn't mean it's bad and I'd be certainly appreciative of the effort taken. You'll never really know when gifting things like that whether the recipients like them so may as well just not worry yourself too much.

There's nothing wrong with putting yourself out there either. Have you considered digital drawing? I can see things like that working well done on an iPad or drawing pad and printed. You could then use the image for greetings cards or repeat prints etc. IRL you do tend to notice things like cheaper paper and the way watercolours lift on it.

babouchette · 18/08/2021 20:00

I love it! You are very talented!

I8toys · 18/08/2021 20:05

Its lovely

Boopeedoop · 18/08/2021 20:07

Don't change a thing. It's really lovely!

Loveitloveitloveit · 18/08/2021 20:10

Love that op! If you need practice at doing a ‘w’ I’d happily take it off your hands Wink

Phyllis321 · 18/08/2021 20:13

It’s lovely OP, very pretty and unusual.

Dontwatchfootball · 18/08/2021 20:15

Someone made something for her. Actually, 2 people put effort into having something made for her. That is priceless to me.

GreyhoundG1rl · 18/08/2021 20:17

Can I ask for the L stands for?
Why do you want to know her name?!

KilljoysDutch · 18/08/2021 20:17

Winsor and Newton are great paints for a beginner! They're my absolute favourites and learning to mix so many colours yourself is a great idea. It's much better to mix your own than buy the different colours. If I was to line the L I'd use a really thin paint brush and probably winsor and newton gold metallic ink.

The only other tip I can think to give right now is one I wish I knew at the beginning - White gouache is the most amazing thing ever, gouache is like watercolour but it's not transparent so you can use white gouache over your watercolours to add back in highlights or fix mistakes. It can even be mixed with your watercolours to make pastel colours.

Keep going! Your work is lovely and honestly I love how loose and relaxed your florals are.

Wrenna · 18/08/2021 20:17

Gorgeous!

Toddlerteaplease · 18/08/2021 20:24

It's lovely. I'd absolutely put that on my wall.

Boombadoom · 18/08/2021 20:26

I also paint and never like my own work. You’re better at flowers than me and I’ve sold lots of art. Well done.

YogaLite · 18/08/2021 20:28

I love it and it's unique, maybe just add the artist's initial in the corner?

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/08/2021 20:29

Flowers are lovely. Don’t like the L (but I don’t like anything with initials/words so probably best to just ignore me).

Winenota · 18/08/2021 20:30

I agree with bimblybomblyeyelash! It’s lovely cos it’s made with love by someone she knows. ( it’s also lovely because of the colours and the loose way you have painted the flowers!
) I have a portrait a friend drew of me and a friend, and while you could never call it a ‘ good’ painting, whatever that is, I love it because it’s all a bit odd and because someone I care for drew it and that makes me smile more than any slick, proper picture. She will love it I am sure x

TheTempest · 18/08/2021 20:30

I think it’s lovely. I’m an L and I’d happily have that on my wall- and tell everyone about the very talented person who painted it! Well done!
