Quirky London tourist attractions

Subeccoo · 16/08/2021 15:17

Hey all
I know London very well and usually only visit family there but my 16 yo ds and I have a few days there next week and we want to do some stuff.
We've done all the usual tourist stuff, so looking for some hidden gems?!
DS loves anything geeky. He's obsessed with Japanese culture too. Art is good, museums if they're really engaging... Anything goes really!
Anyone got any good ones?

I haven’t had a chance to go yet but I really want to visit Dennis Severs house. Sir John Soane’s museum is interesting and a bit different as well

Ylvamoon · 16/08/2021 15:27

If he likes museums I'd suggest the John Soane Museum, it's the house of the founder of the British Museum.

If nothing else, it just shows him all the wird and wonderful places a collections can be stored!

Japan House on Kensington High St?

P0gM0Th0in · 16/08/2021 15:28

Do a mudlarking lesson with Thames Discovery.

Terhou · 16/08/2021 15:30

Sir John Soane's museum in Lincoln's Inn.
London Museum of Water and Steam in Kew.
The Postal museum
The Foundling Museum

HelloDulling · 16/08/2021 15:31

This is an interesting exhibition at the V&A. www.vam.ac.uk/collections/design-1900-now

It’s not huge, but if you’re down it that part of town it’s worth a look.

Plexie · 16/08/2021 15:32

I was going to suggest Dennis Severs' house too - it has now reopened:
dennissevershouse.co.uk/
It's in Spitalfields which is an interesting area - a mix of new City buildings and pockets of 17th century buildings. Plus a market and shops.

Also Japan Centre, a Japanese supermarket just off Leicester Square:

Subeccoo · 16/08/2021 15:33

We've done sir John soanes but def adding the Japan centre to the list!!
Been reading about Denis severs, might do that !

Get the book secret London for about fifty ideas

FrankiesKnuckle · 16/08/2021 15:34

A bit out of the way over in Walthamstow but worth it.

MayContainNits · 16/08/2021 15:35

Museum of the Home (was the Geffrye Musuem) in the East End - a row of almshouses which has been divided into room sets, showing how domestic life has changed from the Tudor period until now.

Subeccoo · 16/08/2021 15:37

We're going to God's own junkyard on the Friday eve as my cousin lives over that way!
The big one I forgot to mention is FOOD.
We lovvve Borough Market and Mercato Metropolitano, done Spitalfields, seven dials and brick Lane but any other suggestions would be great!

Has anyone been to the Canal Museum? I saw a sign pointing towards it from Kings Cross once and was intrigued.

Certainly around here (Yorkshire), there's a lot of history surrounding the building of the canals, but it's likely that the tunnelling that was required through the hills here made it a much more arduous undertaking.

FizzyPink · 16/08/2021 15:38

Camden market is also great for food nowadays. Lots of TikTok trends around there if he’s into that

ChessieFL · 16/08/2021 15:39

I haven’t been there yet, but I want to go here: museumofbrands.com/

Bambooshoot · 16/08/2021 15:39

Have you been to Dennis Severs House? It’s quite quirky - dennissevershouse.co.uk/ I went during the day but they also do candlelight tours which would be pretty spooky.

Subeccoo · 16/08/2021 15:40

Museum of the home looks brilliant!!

Im not keen on Camden and thankfully he's not interested, but we went last year so done it recently!!
