London off the beaten track

Hope you'll forgive me for starting two London threads in quick succession, but I'm spending a fair bit of time there over the summer.

Things I have done, like and would happily do again:
Wellcome Collection
Geffyre (I think this has just re-opened?)
Hunterian (still closed, I think)
John Soanes
Walking from St Katherine's Docks, through Wapping and Limehouse and checking out the old pubs
Highgate Cemetery.
Kings Cross to Camden or Angel along the canal
Primrose Hill (not really off the beaten path but very lovely)
William Morris house
Greenwich stuff, and walking from Greenwich to Deptford

Anything either pretty, or with good historical interest would particularly appeal!

Dennis Severs' House?

Any of the tours run by the Cemetery Club are great.

The Bank of England museum is surprisingly fascinating.

Museum of the Docklands is good too

My dad spent most of lockdown doing blue plaque walks through bits of London that he didn't know that well and really enjoyed it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/07/2021 20:19

Thank you. The Cemetery Club sounds very much up my street! Grin

The Geffrye is now called The Museum of the Home.

Postman's Park near St Paul's is lovely - there's a wall of ceramic tablets commemorating self-sacrifice and it's really moving and lovely.

This is exactly the kind of thing I love! Have done blue plaque walks around: Chelsea The area near the Imperial War museum Bloomsbury The area behind Selfridges/Marylebone etc

Any he'd particularly recommend?

I think he did one around Hampstead which he really liked

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/07/2021 20:21

Ideally I'd like to be in an area with a few things to do:
eg: we've booked Sky Garden, so will probably check out some of the Wren churches etc at the same time

All Hallows by the tower is an interesting visit. Hopefully it's open again!

The wonderful thing about London, you can live here your whole life & still find new things!

Angliski · 25/07/2021 20:25

There’s a circular walk you can do around London’s green spaces. Part of it is in Trent Park/ welsh harp reservoir area near where I grew up. Apparently it’s a full circle of north south eastern and west london.

Brockwell park lido is nice, Columbia road flower market, the Chelsea physic garden.

BatonRouge · 25/07/2021 20:26

I found the Line Walk really interesting and engaging. It's a sculpture trail and public art walk focusing on nature and heritage, following the Greenwich Meridian through to the Olympic park taking you through some quirky places.

oldoperatingtheatre.com/

I also fancy this.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/07/2021 20:27

So glad I started this thread. Have done the Old Operating Theatre a couple of times. Would recommend if you're in the area with a spare hour.

Also , this museum.

The feminist Jack the Ripper tour is definitely worth it. Not quite sure what its official name is but basically it doesn't glorify him but tells the history of his victims and humanises their lives

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/07/2021 20:35

Thanks so much for all of these.

I'm happy to read up on things and be my own tour guide, if I can choose an area to focus on. Am not very good at 'organised groups' things (anti-social old cow).

Green Chain walk from Nunhead Cemetery to Beckenham Place Park.

onemouseplace · 25/07/2021 20:38

One of my favourite things to do is just to walk in central London, so leave myself extra time and walk instead of jumping on the tube. I used to work near Selfridges and one of my favourite ways back was to walk to Green Park through Mayfair, going a slightly different way each time through the back streets, just keeping my eyes open.

Maybe there might still be some good ideas on this old thread I started a few years ago:

Thanks for this. I tried to revive your wonderful thread once, but didn't get many takers.

If the Cemetery Park Club us your sort if thing, then go to Abney Park Cemetery.

It's on the Capital Ring - a long distance footpath round London, which is you have the time/inclination will take you past all, sorts of things you never knew were there.

I'd also recommend Leighton House museum (Kensington) and the lesser known UCL museums such as the Petrie.
