Quirky London tourist attractions

Hey all
I know London very well and usually only visit family there but my 16 yo ds and I have a few days there next week and we want to do some stuff.
We've done all the usual tourist stuff, so looking for some hidden gems?!
DS loves anything geeky. He's obsessed with Japanese culture too. Art is good, museums if they're really engaging... Anything goes really!
Anyone got any good ones?

The Old Operating Theatre
18 Stafford Terrace (closed until mid-September). Fun as you get an in character guide.
Boat trip to Greenwich
Highgate Cemetery (west side)
Train trip in the postal museum (not cheap though)

Blankspace4 · 16/08/2021 15:55

I can recommend the Museum of Brands!

Do the mound by Marble Arch. It's free at the moment because everyone that paid, complained about how rubbish it is! I went yesterday and it was actually quite a fun experience, but only because people were chatting at the top and generally agreeing that it is, indeed, a waste of money Smile

The wellcome museum at Euston is interesting, John soanes museum. Not sure if it's still there but we used to go up to the huge Japanese supermarket complex in n London, mostly groceries but they had anime stuff cutesy stationery etc and a great restaurant

Bambooshoot · 16/08/2021 16:14

Now I want to go for a West End musical brunch followed by a Life-sized Monopoly game!

The Automaton Museum is great fun.

Saatchi Gallery

Someone has already suggested Japan House - looks fab - you can have Japanese-style afternoon tea there as well;

Dennis Severs is good - but you need to book in advance as they have weird opening times. But that's an interesting area (Brick Lane/Spitalifields) that would likely appeal to a 16 year old.

Sky Garden is great for a free fantastic view, also prebook

For general quirky background information about London, I like Jago Hazzard's YouTube videos. They have a definite bias to the Underground system, but he manages to make even that interesting for total non-train nerds like me.

Subeccoo · 16/08/2021 17:01

Will defo do the mound!
He loves the saatchi gallery, been loads of times.
Did sky garden last year, loved that !
We've been to Spitalfields loads of times and brick lane but he's never had a famous brick lane bagel so that's on the list too!

Marugame is stop number one when we get into Liverpool St. He's already talking about getting a job there when he leaves home Grin

Has anyone been to the Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities in E8? We're going to London soon and that's potentially on our list of we get time. Also the Orbit slide, Clink Prison Museum and hopefully Highgate Cemetary.

Leighton House is interesting, but seems there are only tours each Sunday in the summer but will reopen in Sept
