Quirky London tourist attractions

Hey all
I know London very well and usually only visit family there but my 16 yo ds and I have a few days there next week and we want to do some stuff.
We've done all the usual tourist stuff, so looking for some hidden gems?!
DS loves anything geeky. He's obsessed with Japanese culture too. Art is good, museums if they're really engaging... Anything goes really!
Anyone got any good ones?

I’ve just come across Urban Punks Axe Throwing, by chance. Might be fun? 😃

newnortherner111 · 19/08/2021 18:39

You could visit the Marble Arch Mound, something so bad that you can probably dine out on the story of visiting it for many years.

Egghead68 · 19/08/2021 21:05

I went to it today and can confirm it totally lives down to its reputation!

FenceSplinters · 19/08/2021 21:13

We really enjoyed the Curry Sark in Greenwich.

WouldBeGood · 20/08/2021 06:10

Oops, Whistle Punks is the axe throwing place

SquirmOfEels · 20/08/2021 07:58

@FenceSplinters

Is that a pun restaurant or a typo?
Terhou · 20/08/2021 10:04

I'm mystified by the Marble Arch mound. Why did anyone ever think it could conceivably add anything to what London has to offer?

I’ve walked past it a few times lately. It’s absolutely shit.
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 20/08/2021 10:25

@HelloDulling also I love how they're now pretending that they always intended it to be shit. Grin That line from one of the people behind it - something like, 'We had hoped it would divide opinion, but the important thing is that it gets people talking.' Not exactly that, but along those lines.

They wish opinion were divided!

FenceSplinters · 20/08/2021 11:05

@SquirmOfEels I wish that was a restaurant! Typo, I’m afraid.

SoupDragon · 20/08/2021 11:33

The Mound (or the Pile o'Shit) was meant to offer brilliant views from the top wasn't it? I think that was the point. Unfortunately there's a great view of a building site and some trees or something.

Egghead68 · 20/08/2021 11:37

You can see the road, some trees and the building opposite through wire mesh

Yes, exactly 😂

SoupDragon · 20/08/2021 11:41

They should have added a big slide to get down.

Completely agree. It's such a shit concept in the location to begin with.
SoupDragon · 20/08/2021 12:02

Thinking about adding a slide to the Mound made me think of the Helter Skelter at the Olympic Park.

Sophoclesthefox · 20/08/2021 12:18

Fab thread, blantantly place marking as though I live here, I never know what to do when I get some free time. Thanks, OP Grin

I’m never up in Marble Arch, and I totally forgot about the mound. I walked past it, and asked the person I was walking with “has that always been there?” I assumed it was some kind of earthworks from a building project 😂 it’s startlingly ugly.

WouldBeGood · 20/08/2021 12:39

Apparently there is also a restaurant called My Neighbours The Dumplings after an anime film. Anyone been?

Amaterasux · 20/08/2021 12:46

The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, Fine Art & UnNatural History - absolutely brilliant and full of weirdness.

Japan House London (Kensington High Street); always has some great exhibitions but the food is very pricey.

JP Books and the Kyoto Garden are also worth a visit.

Amaterasux · 20/08/2021 12:47

I've been up the Mound; it's not something I would pay for (but they have some free tickets for part of August).
