I did something daring today... do you think I'll get a reply?

I was at the Drs. waiting room today and a gentleman came in and sat by my side. We looked briefly and smiled at each other. I thought he looked like a really nice person, not gorgeously handsome but there was something in him that made me want to know a bit more. He was well dressed and was wearing a name tag but I did not find the way to properly read it without being very obvious. I was trying to find an excuse to talk to him when I was called in to my appointment.

When I finished he was gone. I was just about to leave myself, when I stopped and thought: "What the hell, what do you have to lose?". So I asked the receptionist: "Excuse me, I'm going to be cheeky but, if I pass you a note would you be able to give it to the gentleman who was sitting by my side about 20 min ago?". She smiled at me looking amused and said that it could be arranged.

So I quickly scribbled this on the back of a receipt: "Hello, I am the lady sitting by your side at the waiting room earlier. I was wondering, would you like to go for a coffee one day? If not, I just hope this note made your day. Aurynne, 555-3453", and a smiley face.

I can't believe I did that!!! I'm 45, no spring chicken, but I am feeling quite excited. I have no idea whether the man is married, has a girlfriend, is gay or celibate, but even if I get no answer I am enjoying imagining his face when he gets the note. Which I really hope he gets. I want to know where he works, and why he was wearing a name tag. And what his name is. And most of all, whether he thought he'd like to know me too, or if it was all in my head only.

Do you think I'll get a reply?

Has anyone else done something like this? Please tell me what happened while I nervously wait for a message that may never arrive!!!

It's not that long ago that any note passed to anyone would have to be quarantined for 3 days before reading it. Grin

TheVolturi · 16/08/2021 08:32

If he got the note, I bet it made his day!

NautaOcts · 16/08/2021 08:33

Anyone else really wondering what he was seeing the doctor about?

Sparklingbrook · 16/08/2021 08:35

Be funny if his wife came in to pick him up just as the Receptionist was handing the note over. Grin

lljkk · 16/08/2021 08:35

GDPR is about access to identifiable personal data in digital formats, it's not about giving out hand-written notes to strangers! Clue in the name.

I hope OP has a nice interaction with the fellow.

DD is a bit of man-eater would have batted eyelashes at him until he asked for her number. None of this note malarky.

Shirleyphallus · 16/08/2021 08:37

@Lumpwoody

It makes me feel *@Shirleyphallus* that I need to ask at my doctors what their policy would be.

I have ptsd and anxiety due to past experience and it’s making me very anxious. Yes.

You’ve posted almost every 2nd or 3rd post on this thread, perhaps if it’s that triggering then it might be worth stepping away
JustJustWhy · 16/08/2021 08:37

What makes me laugh is that if we were watching this as a TV programme or documentary about a couple in their 80s or 90s telling us the story of how they met this way I don't think anyone would think it was creepy at all.

AlmostSummer21 · 16/08/2021 08:38

@christmascrazylady

If I went to the doctors and the receptionist gave me a note from a man sitting next to me I'm not sure I would be impressed that a professional medical centre would take part in this attempted hookup. Sorry but if you where s man it would come across as creepy
No it wouldn't, we'll, not to your average, balanced person.
Sparklingbrook · 16/08/2021 08:40

I am an average balanced person, and find it a bit odd and creepy, maybe it's my age. I mean I find the idea of OLD terrifying.

God that's grim. 'A bit of a man-eater' 'batted eyelashes'. I thought we'd moved on from this, in 2021.

(And it's not a Jilly Cooper bonkbuster).

Eviebeans · 16/08/2021 08:41

Hope the receptionist got a clear view of who you were sitting next to and knew who to give it to...
I don't think it's a bad idea but can't see it working at my gp surgery

AlmostSummer21 · 16/08/2021 08:44

@Lumpwoody

Passing the note wouldn’t be a gdpr breach but it would be the wrong thing for the receptionist to do.

It’s not for a receptionist to judge an interaction and decide if it’s safe or not for a note to be passed. I would expect they have a blanket rule.

Give it a rest.

It's a note, not a bomb.

WhatIsThisPlease · 16/08/2021 08:48

If I'd done that to my GP receptionist, she'd have sighed, asked what it was about then told me she couldn't pass it on until two weeks on Thursday Grin

ninja · 16/08/2021 08:50

A university friend and I got back in touch exactly like this when she saw me go at the doctors - I'm very grateful the receptionist passed on the note

Lumpwoody · 16/08/2021 08:52

My Anxiety means I can’t step away but thanks for the suggestion.

Lalliella · 16/08/2021 08:54

Exciting! Update us OP if you get a call!

lockdownvino · 16/08/2021 08:58

Many years ago someone did this to me on a bus journey. We had been looking and smiling until his stop approached. He passed me his bus ticket with his number on it. I text him and we went out for dinner but as lovely as he was I didn't "feel" it and so it became nothing more. But it made my day and was a lovely experience. Good for you and I hope you get a reply!!!!!

KidneyBeans · 16/08/2021 08:59

@SquirryTheSquirrel

What personal data would she need to access to pass on a note exactly?

It isn't clear whether the man had left the building - if he'd left the building the receptionist would need his address to pass the note on.

No she would need his address to post the note out to him. Not to literally pass it along which is what the OP asked.

As accessing his personal medical information is illegal and a breach of medical ethics I think that we can take the info the op has given us at face value and not extrapolate to imaginary illegal scenarios that she's not alluded to

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 16/08/2021 09:01

Oh for God's sake, genuine bad past experiences aside, what a pity something like this has lead to all the 'It's creepy' responses Hmm You'd report the receptionist? Fgs. If I got such a (kindly written and not a bit pushy) note from a man in similar circumstances I'd just laugh if not interested/unavailable - not in a mean way but in a it would put me a smile on my face way. I got an admiring note left on my windscreen once. Again, laughed. Fingers crossed you hear back OP.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 16/08/2021 09:02

DB had a woman from his regular blood downing session leave him a note suggesting a meeting. He’s been married for decades and wears a wedding ring.

He thought it was a bit creepy.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 16/08/2021 09:04

Your anxiety means you can't step away?! With all due respect, it sounds like you need to speak to someone. You are in charge of your behaviour, not your anxiety. You absolutely can, and sounds like should, step away. Luckily this situation doesn't concern you in the slightest.

Lumpwoody · 16/08/2021 09:05

I am medicated and receive therapy for my anxiety so I am already “speaking to someone”.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 16/08/2021 09:09

Good I'm glad. I doubt they would agree with 'I can't step away because of my anxiety'. This is the type of situation when you have to take charge.
