One small way to help Afghanistan

Copied from a FB post

Tonight not tomorrow tonight we desperately need the help of each and everyone.

Practical action please can everyone tweet Boris Johnson and your own mp and post on their facebook pages and instragrams with #Nowzad animal shelter Afghanistan, save its staff from certain death.

For those who don’t know Nowzad set up the first ever animal shelter in Afghanistan its has dogs, cats and even donkeys. It was set up by former royal marine Pen Farthing. It trains young women and has trained 500 young vets since it started. They will be seen as British collaborators and face certain death and for the women worse, if the 25 staff and their families are not got to the safety of the UK. Please act now as they Nowzad did for the Afghan people and our troops. Tomorrow is too late it has to tonight.

Thanks for posting this - I've been following this story on SM, it's just heartbreakingly sad and it's looking less and less likely that this is going to end well. Apparently they haven't been able to get to the cargo plane Pen (the ex Royal Marine who set up and runs the charity) had arranged to get him, the staff and the healthier dogs and cats out of there (They've had to let the donkeys and horses go, and PTS the older and less well cats and dogs as that was the kinder option than leaving them there now the Taliban are back in control.

On his last update, Pen reported that the Taliban have now occupied the building next door so things are not looking great. Pen, as an ex military, was apparently offered the chance to get out of Afghanistan, but he is refusing to go and leave his amazing team of staff and volunteers behind, they will likely be captured and killed for 'helping the enemy'.

It takes a LOT to get me, but this really has, I'm desperately hoping it's not too late to get Pen, his staff and the animals to safety. Please consider following this story, raising awareness of it and even donating if you can.

I have been really moved by this story, and a similar one by Kabul small animal rescue too. I have donated to both. Really hoping for a ray of hope for them all Sad

The RCVS have made a statement, just an awful situation.

Trump, and now it would seem. Biden have a lot to answer for

Shanghaisprize · 17/08/2021 01:29

It's just bloody awful isn't it - I mean to see a former Commando in tears like that, all the good they have done and tried to do only for it to be wiped out in such an awful way. They do seem to have some public figures speaking up for them now (in link) which may hopefully get Pen and his staff to safety, but I can't see how they will now get out the cats and dogs they were hoping to fly to safety. The whole situation is beyond awful.

Yes, pleased to see the RCVS statement, I'm hoping it will help. Whatever happens, it's looking like any rescue now will be a people only one - bloody awful to think of the staff there, their skills and dedication have nursed those poor animals back to health, even found homes for many only for them to have to euthanise them now they are well and happy as it's the better option than the alternative they're now faced with. Just desperately sad.

Marmite0nToast · 17/08/2021 03:25

Thank you for sharing. Saw the interview with Pen on BBC this morning here in Australia. Just heart-breaking. Have donated, shared and tweeted as much as I can over here. Here's keeping everything crossed that Pen, his team and at least some of their rescues are able to get safe passage out of Kabul.

Please also help these guys if you can. They are even now still rescuing animals!

Thank you OP for highlighting this. All my thoughts and prayers are with the people who do good in this world. We owe it to humanity to try and help however we can.

Oh my goodness - these latest updates are horrifying. What the hell is going on? Why are they not letting them through the gate? Please, please do what you can people - spread the word about this.

Second link (if they work) explains the situation very well.

I've not read the full thread but wanted to come on to share this link, it's template letter which is sent to your MP, takes seconds to complete.

Sorry, this link..

FreshFreesias · 17/08/2021 21:21

It’s horrifying.
Nowzad is a fantastic charity and now all those great people and equipment will go to waste.
I despair.
I have no words to share the disgust I feel for Biden.
He must resign!

Henrynextdoor · 17/08/2021 21:26

Emailed my MP with the template given in above link.
Donated to Nowzad with the above link.
So pleased I can do something, thank you.

FeralMeryl · 17/08/2021 22:35

Emailed MP & those listed above, donated and bumping

Ethelfromnumber73 · 17/08/2021 22:44

I've been aware of Nowzad for years - amazing charity. Have followed the recent posts with horror and thought that Pen looked worryingly although understandably on the edge earlier today. Just hoping they can all get out. What a shitshow. Don't know how Biden is sleeping

BringMeTea · 18/08/2021 07:42

Bump bump

WTF475878237NC · 18/08/2021 07:50

I've just donated and will contact those above and my MP too although he doesn't seem to be human.

Shanghaisprize · 18/08/2021 15:20

Hopefully some better news from there today. In his last video Pen said he's still hoping to get some of the animals out (after the staff obviously) - I so hope he still can.

Shanghaisprize · 18/08/2021 15:22

he doesn't seem to be human

I suspect that may be one of the criteria Wink

Keep up the shouting though all, not many things we can make much difference to in life (sadly), this one we can.
