Copied from a FB post

Tonight not tomorrow tonight we desperately need the help of each and everyone.

Practical action please can everyone tweet Boris Johnson and your own mp and post on their facebook pages and instragrams with #Nowzad animal shelter Afghanistan, save its staff from certain death.

For those who don’t know Nowzad set up the first ever animal shelter in Afghanistan its has dogs, cats and even donkeys. It was set up by former royal marine Pen Farthing. It trains young women and has trained 500 young vets since it started. They will be seen as British collaborators and face certain death and for the women worse, if the 25 staff and their families are not got to the safety of the UK. Please act now as they Nowzad did for the Afghan people and our troops. Tomorrow is too late it has to tonight.

They have posted this video showing the chaos around the entrance of the airport:

www.facebook.com/nowzadrescue/videos/717078345818566

Not looking likely now that the staff, let alone any animals, will be getting out of there before the Taliban take back control of the airport in a couple of days.

Bloody awful, and I am disgusted with the UK and US governments (non) handling of this - unforgivable. Please keep tweeting/ emailing etc the following:

Rt Hon Wendy Moreton - #wendymoreton
Rt Hon James Cleverly - #JamesCleverly
Rt Hon Dominic Raab - #DominicRaab
Rt Hon Zac Goldsmith - #ZacGoldsmith
Rt Hon Lord Tarrick - #Lordtarric
Rt Hon Ben Wallace - #benwallace

Although Boris apparently mentioned this in the commons yesterday, Pen Fathing says that the has had no word or contact from anyone, they re still all stuck there and time is rapidly running out.

The most recent update is that Biden has blocked the banks in Afghanistan from issuing any money. The staff are now running out of food. Nowzad have asked that their supporters message Biden and those of influence in the US government to ask them to reverse this decision.

Errno · 21/08/2021 14:39

Yes it’s heartbreaking isn’t it. It doesn’t even look good for Nowzad now despite everything ready to go.

Dire situation out there for locals and everyone desperate to leave. No money. Fear of the Taliban and no way to get out. I wonder how Biden sleeps at night.

Wheretoeattweenandteen · 21/08/2021 15:03

The airport is turning very volatile, American citizens have been good not to go and unfortunately a member of the vicious haqqani family has taken over "security".

LaMagdalena · 21/08/2021 15:20

I've also been following this, I donated a tiny bit (I don't have much money but I wanted to do something). I'm constantly thinking about these people and animals, my mind doesn't want to entertain the idea that they won't get out Sad

If the Government can't get their act together to get the translators out I don't know how much chance they have but fingers firmly crossed that these people and their families are rescued very quickly.

Shanghaisprize · 21/08/2021 21:34

This is the latest video from Nowzad

Not looking good at all.

Meltinthemiddle · 22/08/2021 01:14

I can't stop thinking about them all. Pen is incredibly brave to say behind with them all. I'm literally praying for a miricle 🙏. Biden has completely fucked it up.

Smashedavacado · 22/08/2021 09:26

This is shocking. Find myself constantly checking the Nowzad Facebook page and elsewhere for news. The situation seems even worse today 😔

Smashedavacado · 22/08/2021 10:07

Great interview by Dominic Dyer. fb.watch/7xPiNsVcUA/

Needapoodle · 22/08/2021 10:12

I am hoping they get the people out. I can't get behind rescuing animals when there are children in mortal danger.

Shanghaisprize · 22/08/2021 10:45

I can't get behind rescuing animals when there are children in mortal danger

Completely get you, but the animals apparently would be leaving by a (privately funded) cargo plane which wouldn't be suitable for humans anyway.

Fferny1 · 22/08/2021 10:50

The news reports this morning state they plan to take a extra 100 Afghans as well as the animals & sanctuary staff.
I hope they can work out how to get to the airport safely.

Errno · 22/08/2021 11:08

@Needapoodle

I am hoping they get the people out. I can't get behind rescuing animals when there are children in mortal danger.

The Nowzad founder Pen Farthing was almost in tears explaining how many people had got in touch with him to help them out. He said he wished he could help everyone but couldn’t - that it was hard enough securing evacuation for his staff. Imagine their pleas weighing on your conscience when you are already putting your life on the line trying to help those you are in a position to. The fact is, he will be saving the lives of his staff and their family (and I think more) and this is a privately funded operation to help the animals he and his staff have loved and cared for and have formed relationships with. Those of us with dogs, well they are part of our family. Basically, these dogs are part of his.

There is no reason to not get behind the evacuation for all that need it, it’s not an either or situation. Those of us willing his mission to be successful are equally hoping everyone else gets out safely, and just as heartbroken at the plight of all those children and their families. We can feel compassion for all the victims in this humanitarian catastrophe.

Errno · 22/08/2021 11:09

In short, he’s certainly done more good than I have!

misscockerspaniel · 22/08/2021 12:14

I can't bear to look at the Nowzad Facebook page & I am also praying for a miracle. The poor poor people and animals of Afghanistan. What is happening is unspeakable. Why isn't the United Nations sending in troops - the country has been abandoned to its fate.

CausingChaos2 · 22/08/2021 13:12

Pen is asking us to lobby the US government. I have done this, and also my local MP, and donated. It’s not just Nowzad, there are other animal charities out there in this same awful predicament like the Kabul Small Animal Rescue a PP shared. These wonderful, selfless people have vowed not to desert the animals in their care.

Tuppity · 22/08/2021 13:49

His latest Facebook update looks more promising.

Tuppity · 22/08/2021 13:49

I think they have the go ahead now to bird a fight with animals. Just need to get to airport

Shanghaisprize · 22/08/2021 20:30

^This. Excellent post Errno.

Just need to get to airport

If only it was a case of 'just'. So many can't get to the airport due to the chaos and crowds and the Taliban actively blocking their route.

www.livemint.com/politics/news/taliban-block-routes-to-kabul-airport-hampering-evacuations-from-afghanistan-11629282634898.html

I'm just desperately hoping they will find a way to extend the time limit on people fleeing beyond Tuesday.

Does anyone know why helicopters couldn't be used to rescue people and get them to the airport (like they did for the embassy staff)? Would that be due to the threat from the Taliban/ an Isis attack or them forbidding it?

Tuppity · 22/08/2021 21:24

Yes I have no idea how they get to the airport through all the crowds. It seems an impossible task, especially with all the animal crates.

Shanghaisprize · 22/08/2021 23:36

It seems an impossible task, especially with all the animal crates

It really does doesn't it Sad. I keep hoping for a more positive update from them, but the situation only ever seems to get worse. As Pen says on his video, people there live day to day, how on earth will they manage for much longer with no income and no viable route out of there? The whole situation is just so horribly sad.

Tbh though, even if there is a 'happy ending' to this, it'll be a hollow one as so many other innocents will have been left behind.
