One small way to help Afghanistan

Copied from a FB post

Tonight not tomorrow tonight we desperately need the help of each and everyone.

Practical action please can everyone tweet Boris Johnson and your own mp and post on their facebook pages and instragrams with #Nowzad animal shelter Afghanistan, save its staff from certain death.

For those who don’t know Nowzad set up the first ever animal shelter in Afghanistan its has dogs, cats and even donkeys. It was set up by former royal marine Pen Farthing. It trains young women and has trained 500 young vets since it started. They will be seen as British collaborators and face certain death and for the women worse, if the 25 staff and their families are not got to the safety of the UK. Please act now as they Nowzad did for the Afghan people and our troops. Tomorrow is too late it has to tonight.

'I’ve read some nonsense on here, but janiie’s posts take the biscuit. Refusing to back down after clearly being told that no animal is taking a human’s place, the argument now seems to be that it looks bad or is ‘tone deaf’.

'Nonsense'. Right.

Look this is a highly distessing situation. I want Farthing and all his staff out of there. My issue is with 'Operation Ark'. If we find out they have delayed any rescue or evacuation to save animals then that imo is very wrong. They will be putting other people at risk while doing so, they need to run and sadly forget the dogs and cats harsh though that sounds.

SueSaid · 24/08/2021 08:19

'It’s now being prevented by the ministry of defence, who seem to want to prioritise rescuing cars'

I really wouldn't believe everything you read on twitter. There will be plenty going on behind the scenes but hey guess what they won't want to give the taliban a blow by blow account. Why would they 'abandon' a high profile ex marine?!

FedNlanders · 24/08/2021 08:31

What is going on? I was in tears with the latest update. It sounds heartbreaking.

SueSaid · 24/08/2021 08:48

He is risking his life and his staff's life. Wallace has just been on the news saying they haven't been cut off from the MOD. It is concerning that Farthing is digging his heels in prioritising animals over his and his staff's welfare. He needs to get out with his staff and stop this Operation Ark hysteria. The inevitable special services rescue mission when he leaves it too late will put lives at risk.

Meltinthemiddle · 24/08/2021 09:05

I'm heartbroken for all the people left behind but have especially been following this story and long for a happy ending.

Errno · 24/08/2021 09:14

I really wouldn’t believe everything politicians tell you.

SueSaid · 24/08/2021 10:05

Why would they cut off contact though?! He will be a prized target for the taliban, the MOD will not want to send in special forces after the 31st to rescue him, risking more lives.

Desperate people have left family behind! mothers handing over babies as they know what is coming yet he is adamant his pets and rescue animals are getting through checkpoints. He is deluded and putting his staff's lives at risk.

Kendodd · 24/08/2021 10:53

Reading this thread and a bit more into it, it sounds like the animals may actually be the ones rescuing the people. In that, if it wasn't for these animals, the people around them might have no route out (although they still probably won't have). I've changed my mind a bit, in that I had just thought , leave the animals and just get the people out, put the people in the hold if necessary. I think if any people get out of this horror though, it will be by clinging to the animals backs as their only escape.

SueSaid · 24/08/2021 11:09

'In that, if it wasn't for these animals, the people around them might have no route out'

They have a route out, all his Afghan staff have been given rights of passage they just need to get their arses to the airport without trying to get 200 odd animals through checkpoints too. It is an emergency yet he is wasting time and fannying about. The time to rehome 200 pets was months ago. Now Ricky Gervais has joined in on twitter calling people counts for pointing out the animals should be left and he is wasting precious time.

SueSaid · 24/08/2021 11:10

Cunts*

Kendodd · 24/08/2021 11:27

Well presumably the staff can just go ahead (if they can get through Taliban checkpoints) and Pen Farthing can stay behind with the animals. I very much doubt he's preventing them leaving. If they leave in convoy with the animals, the world will be watching, this might, hopefully give them extra protection on the journey to the airport.
Without the attention these animals have brought I would bet the people would have no escape route although admittedly they may not have been in as much danger.

notimagain · 24/08/2021 12:26

I gather from elsewhere Mr Farthing is really really starting to *** a lot of people off (current military, ex-military, some of those his ex-colleagues,and the odd politician, as I think was obvious this AM) with frankly what appears to be a complete lack of awareness or perhaps it’s just a severe case of “look at me”…frankly the media need to stop giving him air time because it is not helping anybody.

The troops and some politicians are up to their ears and beyond trying to extract countless numbers of people from Kabul , they don’t have time for this carp, so putting it bluntly Mr Farthing needs to get his head out of his backside, do whatever he can do to disperse the animals in his care and then get himself and those that are entitled to evacuated to the airport PDQ (as in today)..

SueSaid · 24/08/2021 12:38

'Pen Farthing can stay behind with the animals. '

He may well be murdered by the taliban after the 31st, ex military and a westerner do you really think they'll welcome him and his animal shelter? People have such short memories on how brutal the Taliban are. If he delays any longer and him or his staff don't get out and come to harm he will have no one but himself to blame. It is sickening to watch him bleat on every 5 mins on the news, if he didn't get his arse out months ago then now is the time to go. Without his pets.

I'm surprised people like Ricky Gervais are so stupid, living in cloud cuckoo land. Does Gervais really think 100 animals (or whatever, numbers vary on reports) magically appear at an airport and magically get processed onto a plane without using the scant resources that are under pressure already processing people?! I feel sorry for Farthing but he has cocked this up totally and instead of attacking people he should be apologising and getting his staff out.

SueSaid · 24/08/2021 12:40

'so putting it bluntly Mr Farthing needs to get his head out of his backside, do whatever he can do to disperse the animals in his care and then get himself and those that are entitled to evacuated to the airport PDQ (as in today)..'

Indeed. I think he thinks it's a Hollywood blockbuster and he's got the lead role.

Berkeys · 24/08/2021 12:55

The staff and Pen LOVE their animals. They would as soon leave them as they would leave their children! I would be doing the same in his position.

Scare resources but NOT too SCARCE to save a BLOODY CAR!!

snowballer · 24/08/2021 12:57

So patronising.

Needapoodle · 24/08/2021 12:57

Scare resources but NOT too SCARCE to save a BLOODY CAR!!

An armoured car which could be used by the taliban if they get their hands on it.

snowballer · 24/08/2021 13:00

@Needapoodle

Hahaha - the amount of kit that's been left behind far exceeds one armoured car! Multi million pound helicopters, humvees and shed loads of weaponry. To prioritise a truck at this stage is madness.
SueSaid · 24/08/2021 13:09

It isnt just about private chartered planes and 'pets in the hold aren't taking people's places!'. It is about processing at the rammed airport. They can't process animals when women &children have been waiting days. Farthing seems to think they'll be ushered in a special VIP ex military person's side door. The cut off is the 31st. Why tf would he bring strays home when our own rescue centres are already full. For an ex marine he really doesn't seem to be able to think logically. A military person rather than a politician needs to get on the news and tell him and Dyer to stfu and get his staff out now.

'An armoured car which could be used by the taliban if they get their hands on it.'

Exactly.

SueSaid · 24/08/2021 13:12

'To prioritise a truck at this stage is madness.'

To prioritise pets at this stage is madness, to put his life and his staffs life at risk is madness. He will end up getting airlifted by special forces all because of this attention seeking reckless behaviour for a 100 or so animals. On the news now they are saying people are getting executed yet he's on about pets in holds. Utterly sickening.

notimagain · 24/08/2021 13:31

To prioritise a truck at this stage is madness.

Depends on what was in the truck.

SueSaid · 24/08/2021 13:51

Update they'll be in the airport tonight, including pets apparently. Good I hope they thank the many officials who have helped them and I hope this is the last we hear of it.

Berkeys · 24/08/2021 14:29

@JaniieJones and I hope that this is the last we hear of you on this thread too.

Needapoodle · 24/08/2021 14:43

Prioritising a truck makes as much sense to me as prioritising animals. It's NOT about the space in the plane. It's about the resources needed to get them on the plane and process them at other end. In this situation, humans should be the absolute priority.

FedNlanders · 24/08/2021 15:58

I have a horrid feeling kng this will end terribly :(
