Don't know whether to go to hospital.

My went over on my ankle. Put other foot down quickly and my big toe bent underneath me. All my weight went on the folded big toe. Heard a distinct crack.

Big toe twice the size of the other.

Shooting sharp pains.

Can't place any part of foot on the floor.

DH says elevate and ice - which I've done.

Not sure if it's broken. 🙄

For a possible big toe break you need to be seen. Phone up your local minor injuries unit and you’ll get given an appointment time to turn up. Big toe fracture are treated as they affect your walking, other toes not so much but they will see you for this. Sorry your DH is not supportive.

BadgeronaMoped · 14/08/2021 19:44

Maybe give 111 a ring for advice, you could also go to your local walk-in centre tomorrow morning when it opens (quieter then), that's if it has an x-ray dept.

Don’t wait until morning. Phone tonight.
NHS advice is clear that if it’s your big toe then it’s A&E/minor injuries. Other toes you can stay at home like DH suggested but not big toe

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/08/2021 19:46

Don't bother with 111, I'm still waiting for a call back from them from FEBRUARY 🙄

You fell, you heard a crack you need an x-ray, go to A and E.

And ...OUCH!!!Shock

WetBench · 14/08/2021 19:46

www.nhs.uk/conditions/broken-toe/

Scrol down to where it says attend A&E for big toe

WrongKindOfFace · 14/08/2021 19:46

I’d go for a big toe, especially as you can’t weight bear at all.

RobinPenguins · 14/08/2021 19:48

The NHS advice is A&E / minor injuries for a potentially broken big toe. I was just reading the website the other day as I’ve broken one of mine (not big toe so just ice and rest and hobbling at home for me). Sounds really painful, hope you can get sorted soon.

SpringRainbow · 14/08/2021 19:48

Since it’s swollen and you cannot put any weight on it then that to me says that you should probably get someone to take a look at it.

Bonmonkhouse · 14/08/2021 19:48

I would go to minor injuries, and did when I did something similar.

SuzyDaarling · 14/08/2021 19:50

I’m no expert but from your description I’d say it needs checking esp if you heard a crack. We were always given the mnemonic PLUSDICT to assess possible fractures - Pain, Loss of movement, unnatural movement Swelling/bruising, Deformity, Irregularity, Crepitus (grating sound), Tenderness.

Sounds like you have a lot of these.

msbevvy · 14/08/2021 19:52

Definitely go to A&E if you heard a crack and can't weight bear.

I was able to hobble on mine despite the pain. I even went to a pottery class the next day before giving in and finally going to the hospital.

I ended up with a plaster cast on my foot and unable to weight bear for several weeks.

NanaPorsche · 14/08/2021 19:55

Oh no.

That'll throw a spanner in the works.

I'll ring now.

Lindy2 · 14/08/2021 19:55

It does sound like you might have broken your big toe. I also think the fact you can't weight bear also means you need it looked at.

I would phone 111 and tell them what's happened. They'll let you know the best place to go to get it looked at. I've also found that calling 111 can help reduce the waiting time. DH was sent to a walk in centre a month ago because he couldn't weight bear on one leg after twisting his hip. When he got there he went straight through as they were expecting him.

I hope it's not too painful and you get it sorted soon.

Alternista · 14/08/2021 19:57

Definitely go. I’m pretty sure i broke mine five years ago but stupidly didnt get treatment and now it hurts constantly.

Houseofvelour · 14/08/2021 19:58

As others have said, definitely get it seen to.
I hope it's ok xx

Floralnomad · 14/08/2021 20:00

If you go now you will hopefully be at the end of the ‘injured at football ‘ crowd and before the ‘fell over pissed’ crowd in A&E . I broke a big toe several years ago and couldn’t get my foot in proper shoes / boots for weeks .

AustinPowerful · 14/08/2021 20:04

Yes definitely get it seen to.

I broke my toe- the Dr said with toes you usually just need to rest and try and not walk about on it but with big toes it needs examining and probably strapping or a boot.

babyyy1926 · 14/08/2021 20:06

I would get it seen. I don't really know what they do for a big toe break but i can imagine it is painful and needs at least looking at by a professional

lannistunut · 14/08/2021 20:08

Yes the A&E page clearly says to go is there was a snapping noise at time of injury.

lannistunut · 14/08/2021 20:09

Sorry, the NHS page: www.nhs.uk/conditions/broken-toe/

Pieceofpurplesky · 14/08/2021 20:17

Just to say that sounds bloody painful. Hope
You get it sorted

NanaPorsche · 14/08/2021 20:41

Just sat down at A&E.

111 advised to go.

6 hr wait.

I could do with something to put my leg up on.

Really painful when leg is down.

OP posts:
SuzyDaarling · 14/08/2021 20:55

Oh gosh 6 hours 🙁. Can you ask if there’s some way of supporting your leg while you wait. 6 hours is a long time with it down.

lljkk · 14/08/2021 20:57

If OP's toe is broken... what will A&E do for her?
