Brazen and Strange requests on NextDoor

Eastie77Returns · 14/08/2021 17:52

I don’t know if it’s just a reflection of the people who live in my area or if Nextdoor just attracts strange people in general but some of the posts on my neighbourhood page are a just a mix of brazen entitlement and weirdnessGrin

Today a man has posted a long message explaining he desperately needs someone with a car to pick up his relative from Heathrow. He is not willing to pay but has offered to buy the driver a Costa coffee by way of compensation. For context, it would be a 40 mile round trip. Residents have responded asking why he cannot meet his relative himself or take the Heathrow Express/tube if he doesn’t have a car. He has replied that he doesn’t want to travel on public transport, his relative cannot take the Express as the ticket is “not in her budget”. When a (male) respondent offered to help the poster replied no thanks, the driver must be a womanHmm

Another woman has written an abusive message criticising people who offered to help fund her 5 year old’s birthday party and then backed out. She posted a week ago stating she needed several hundreds of pounds to buy a bike and organise a party. Apparently someone sent her a PM offering to meet her outside Morrison’s to buy her a birthday cake and didn’t show up. Another offered to transfer her money and didn’t. A third person offered something else and didn’t follow through and so it went on. Obviously sad if true but…who goes onto a public site and makes these kinds of requestsShock

Last week someone drew an intricate picture of a missing shoe. They lost it in a park whilst sunbathing(!) and said they were willing to pay compensation as the shoe had sentimental value (why they didn’t just post a picture of the surviving shoe is anyone’s guess).

I admit I just go on ND for the LOLs now!

This made me laugh so hard!! Especially the sunbather?! I wish I lived in your neighborhood Grin

TheProvincialLady · 14/08/2021 18:01

We just get endless Can someone please lend me a floor sander/pressure washer/drill/some other tool you can hire at the tool hire shop half a mile away.

TillyTopper · 14/08/2021 18:02

Your local page seems quite exciting - topics on ours are potholes, bin collections and who is going to plant up the local flower tubs.

TheProvincialLady · 14/08/2021 18:02

Often with the addition “Don’t mind paying for the sandpaper” etc. Which is obviously incredibly generous of them.

NoSquirrels · 14/08/2021 18:03

Mine’s full of bonkers too, OP. They usually start off reasonable but then the crazy comes out.

Complaints about tractors going past their house - and replies agreeing. It’s a rural area at harvest time and they live in houses on a main road… Confused

A missing cat, multiple posts from worried owner over a week or so - then hooray! The cat is home. All good. But then they post again “offering a 20% discount on my online shop in celebration of Kitty’s return” Hmm

Then all the usually thinly veiled xenophobic and prejudiced ‘a man knocked on my door offering to sell/buy/looking suspicious’.

Mad, the lot of them.

Autumnchill · 14/08/2021 18:09

Just registered on ours and it's rather boring! Very disappointed

Mrsmchammer · 14/08/2021 18:12

Ours is most amusing with the brazenness as is Freecycle. I will never cease to be amazed at the things people just ask for. Mac books, garden furniture which must be like new, cookers in working order and bizarrely there's always someone looking a wheelie bin lid.

Vinorosso74 · 14/08/2021 18:13

You must be near me OP. I read the 5th birthday one. Makes a change from the LTN moaners!
It has changed since I joined, there used to be a lot more useful posts and I managed to sell/give away stuff without time wasters.

EBearhug · 14/08/2021 18:14

Ours is mostly missing cats and missing bin collections, plus recommendations requested for cleaners, plumbers, electricians decorators and gardeners.

FreshFancyFrogglette · 14/08/2021 18:16

On our local Facebook page there was a lady swearing blind that "an air con unit was a completely different thing to an air conditioning unit", therefore her boyfriend had not scammed someone out of £100 for what was essentially a fan. The post was both hilarious and infuriating at the same time!

Rogue1001 · 14/08/2021 18:20

Mine is full of people trying to blag stuff for free. Always amuses me.

And foxes

Haha yes the LTNs dominated for months, it all got a bit unpleasant! I actually feel sorry for the 5th birthday woman. She sounds genuinely upset and said she offered to do odd jobs in exchange for help. I just can’t get my head around her expecting randoms to fund her child’s party.

@Autumnchill - My page started out normally and then went batshit. Give it time…

mineofuselessinformation · 14/08/2021 18:24

I have these too, but also have a relative who has no shame in asking for free stuff (that they can afford to buy, actually).
And then there's the FB 'friend' who asks at least every other month to borrow a tenner / have some nappies or formula, but then 'raffles' off probably knock off designer gear.... Confused

Iloveginger · 14/08/2021 18:26

I got into an argument with someone that had took to Nextdoor to accuse his neighbours of stealing his parcel, after it had been wrongly delivered by the driver. He hadn't bothered to knock to get it back before adding 2 + 2 getting 15 and posting about it. It's made me realise many thick people live within a 5 mile radius of me. Scary.

Always baffled by people who live in or move to a rural area and then complain about the ‘noise’ from farm machinery.

We have reports of about a dozen missing cats a week. There was an outcry recently when a woman posted a picture of a stray she had adopted. Apparently it clearly wasn’t a stray and she had effectively kidnapped it..

Our ND had a bonkers woman who practically filled the screen every day with her very limited obsessions. You can block posters so you don't see them.

AnonymousCheerleader · 14/08/2021 18:28

I've never heard of this!

AGirlCalledJohnny · 14/08/2021 18:36

You think you've got crazy, check out @bestofnextdoor on Twitter. Oy vey!!

I'm in SE states, mine if full of maskholes and election fraud and strange noises. Also a fair smattering of "Know where your kids are because if they knock and ditch on my door again I WILL BRING MY GUN OUT" 😳

nameyourshorta · 14/08/2021 18:37

Mine is usually just people advertising their nails business or someone asking for recommendations.

My old one was based in a more, ahem, area, and once a woman asked if she could get some money raised to take her DD to the cinema? Said she'd never been

The thank you gesture? A drawing from her DD

My ND had a frequent poster, who randomly once asked for several tens of thousands of pounds as a bridging loan for his house sale/purchase. He got really angry at the next poster who thought he was joking and posted a Grin

I keep getting invites.

This thread is making me tempted to join when I get the next one Grin

Mpsister · 14/08/2021 18:58

Mine is dominated by one poster who is convinced that the reason he can't get a girlfriend is that he doesn't smoke

Eastie77Returns · 14/08/2021 19:05

@AGirlCalledJohnny I just checked out that Twitter account and I was not disappointed. My favourite is the vegan runner who asked his neighbours to please keep their windows closed when cooking meat so he doesn’t have to deal with the offensive smell when out joggingGrin

Ours is usually quiet but recently there's been posts from a very strange man about his cat.

The cat keeps wondering off for a few days at a time. It's an intact Tom, I'm not a cat person but apparently they have a tendency to do this particularly at this time of year. It's also not chipped and doesn't have a collar.

Anyway, whenever the cat fucks off he bombards the page with DEMANDS in CAPITAL LETTERS that whoever has stolen his cat MUST return it immediately or there will be CONSEQUENCES.
Any attempts at explaining to him that his cat is behaving normally (and honestly I think the cat does it to get some peace from it's lunatic of an owner) are immediately shot down because he KNOWS his cat better.

I feel sorry for the cat.
