A Thing You Don't See These Days

I found a picture of my mum standing on one of those big red coin operated weighing scales today. It had a big dial face. It was in our local shopping centre but I remember seeing them on piers, train stations etc too. Did you ever use them? Other than this picture of my mum I don't remember seeing one in use

Other things you no longer see include machines to stamp a name or message on a strip of tin, these were often at railway stations, and machines to X-ray your feet in shoe shops.

Public telephone booths.

The big weighing machines and tin label making machines used to be on railway platforms along with chocolate dispensing machines (Five Boys bars ). When we went on holiday in N Wales there were cold milk vending machines on the streets as I remember, maybe other cold drinks like orange juice as well.

Fire guards.🔥 All the houses where I grew up had fire guards. Big nursery ones with laundry on them, or smaller ones only put on if going out or to bed.

Those headphone stations in the music section of stores that sold cassettes and CDs where you could listen to tracks from new releases.

Actually.... music sections in stores full stop!

White dog poo
+1

I still have a milkman.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 10/08/2021 01:39

@tomorrowalready

But can you remember who the five boys were?!

swimlyn · 10/08/2021 01:43

Spangles.

They did various flavours. Loved the Old English assortment...

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 10/08/2021 01:43

Cigarette vending machines (not saying it's a bad thing!)

VeniVidiWeeWee · 10/08/2021 01:58

Tobacco pipes.

Miniestelle · 10/08/2021 02:03

Those charity collection statues outside shops of a little boy wearing calipers or a girl with a guide dog with a money slot in them.

swimlyn · 10/08/2021 02:06

Parking lights that you clipped onto the car window with a lead going to the battery.

My first car had a Starting Handle. I actually used it too!

I trust you avoided the broken thumb!

Do you mean they were suposed to be particular characters? I just remember pictures of a grinning boy's face about 9 or 10 stamped in the chocolate. I remember the cigarette machines as well and the collecting boxes in all the shops, for the blind as well.

I even remember phone boxes with a button B which would return unused coins so sometimes they had been forgotten and you could get 2d or something back. The boxes also had racks of phone books to look up numbers.

swimlyn · 10/08/2021 02:27

Blue twists of salt in crisps.

(both thumbs intact thank you) Smile

Wishingwell75 · 10/08/2021 02:55

Those ornate glass bottles filled with brightly coloured liquid in Boots and other pharmacies. Why? Did they ever have a purpose other than decoration?

Wishingwell75 · 10/08/2021 02:58

Also, those tall plastic ash trays. Ashtrays every where in fact, trains, pubs, cafés. Glad that's over tbh.

PurpleSapphire · 10/08/2021 03:04

Yes, whatever happened to white dog poo? Those metal roundabouts on parks where you just climbed on top and held on for dear life until you eventually flew off and hit the gravel.

StormInAGinGlass · 10/08/2021 03:06

@Wishingwell75 it’s so funny you say this I actually googled this exact thing the other day. I thought it was a false memory because I couldn’t find anything about those bottles with the coloured liquid in!

Miniestelle · 10/08/2021 03:07

Porno magazines in hedges

Wishingwell75 · 10/08/2021 03:11

@storminagincup ha! That's exactly why I mentioned it, I was having a conversation with someone about those bottles the other day! Must be something in the air! 😁

WeAreTheHeroes · 10/08/2021 03:11

Stamp machines on post boxes or in the wall outside Post Offices. My memories from the 70s are that they often didn't work properly.
