Just went down a YouTube wormhole watching Borderline and Dress You Up, thought they were the best but then the Blonde Ambition songs like Vogue and Express Yourself followed...

The Immaculate Collection is one of the best albums ever in my humble opinion.

TakeTheStingOut · 01/02/2023 12:03

Get Into The Groove and the Desperately Seeking Susan era. She was so cool.

And Vogue. I went to her Blonde Ambition tour and she was phenomenal.

I was OK with Ray of Light, but not a proper fan like I was in the 80s and early 90s. After that, I can’t think of anything she has done that I enjoyed. Maybe a track or two from the Music era. She really declined when she started doing lame duets and features with ‘young’ artists. I find it hard to look at her these days.

Frozen is her best song, I think

Agree with this.

Also my favourite!

Anything up to Confessions. But listening to her back catalogue, I realised that there's a Madonna song/album for every major stage in my life until now. I'm swamped with memories, and then it all suddenly stops.
I don't recognise her at all any more. Not just the way she looks (why why why) but her behaviour seems stuck. She was always new and interesting. The most shocking thing she could have done is got older gracefully. Instead she got weird and boring.

Shekissedagirlandshelikedit · 02/02/2023 10:46

One of my fave videos of Madonna. I loved this song and her look and her amazing charisma that lit up the screen.

I feel so sad that she seems to have lost herself now. As a woman I get it, getting older totally sucks, but at least no one really cares what I look like. It must be am awful pressure to be a celeb to feel the need hold back the years and remain 'relevant'. I think she would have looked amazing with just a little bit of 'work' here or there as she's blessed with good bone structure. Her face shape has completely changed, her lovely eyes are disappearing and she's starting to look 'mask' like. Look at Patricia Heaton who is the same age as Madonna for an example of good cosmetic surgery. She still looks like herself.

Wow great thread, reminded me how awesome she has been, True Blue was the first album I got one Christmas and I vividly remember disappearing into my room with a selection box to play it on a loop and memorise every word from the lyric sleeve,

Also adore Take a Bow,Rain, Like a prayer.

Actually it's quicker to name the ones I don't like.

But yea, her music contributed massively to the soundtrack of my formative years.

Special mention to Little Star which I think she wrote as a tribute shortly after Lourdes was born. The words are beautiful and make me think of DD. It's a bit hard to listen to actually without getting emotional.

I love every album up to Ray of Light then I lost interest. I've got them all on lp and cd and a few on cassette and a few 12 inches - Dress You Up 12 inch is fabulous. Gambler is a great song that seems to have been forgotten.

If I had to pick a favourite album it would be True Blue. Papa Don't Preach, La Isla Bonita, Open Your Heart, Live to Tell - they all still sound so amazing and fresh.

Oooh Open your heart is ace, love her voice on that. Live to Tell was very grown up.

Everything up to and including 'Confessions' - depends what mood I'm in.

Anyone else hate 'Holiday' though?

Actually, yes!

SiobhanSharpe · 02/02/2023 11:10

I loved the song 'Take A Bow' when I first heard it, then I saw the video -- wow!
So powerful and sexy and the bullfighter is steamily gorgeous.

WomanFromTheNorth · 02/02/2023 11:15

Into the groove era - thr early days. God, I loved her so much!

Zipps · 02/02/2023 11:32

I like the early stuff in the 80's. I remember seeing her first appearance on Totp.
Favourites are:
Cherish
Material girl
Like a virgin
Holiday
Papa don't preach

I was actually a rock chick and a huge heavy metal and sock rock fan and Madonna was the only other genre in my record collection.

hothands · 02/02/2023 12:10

Loved Madonna's earlier pop stuff (Borderline, Like A Prayer etc). She was my idol when I was at school but I couldn't get into her stuff from Ray of Light onwards. I don't really 'get' her these days. A lot of the early stuff seemed like it was a bit tongue in cheek whereas she seems to be taking herself a lot more seriously these days and she's virtually unrecognisable with all the plastic surgery. I feel like she's trying to keep up with artists like Gaga, rather than paving the way like she used to (obviously Madonna was a huge influence on loads of the artists she's now competing with).

theycallmestacie · 02/02/2023 12:13

Borderline. Superb song. With Cherish a close 2nd.

Potterbore · 02/02/2023 12:16

The Immaculate Collection - all my favourite Madonna songs.

Like a prayer is my absolute favourite though - the song, the video, fantastic look.

Zipps · 02/02/2023 12:34

Soft rock not sock

Meredusoleil · 02/02/2023 12:35

Agree with pp about both Take a bow and Little star being emotional songs. Love them!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 03/02/2023 17:31

Ok so im Spotify-ing Madonna now and I'm reminded that Ray of Light had some belters ... Nothing Really Matters, Substitute for Love, and of course my favourite sob fest Little Star. Of course there's some duds too!

Aaah, Rain has now been shuffled on. Happy days.

I've a long-ish car journey by myself tomorrow, I'm going to dig my Madonna cds out and have an amazing karaoke day Grin

Mary46 · 03/02/2023 18:38

Great thread yes early music great. I love Live to Tell.

Vitriolinsanity · 03/02/2023 18:55

Crazy for You is my all time banger.

But I still listen to Erotica and Confessions.
