Somewhat inspired by the 9/11 thread. You can probably estimate my age from this.

I remember:

The Cuban missile crisis
JFK assassination
Apollo 13
Princess Diana's wedding and her death
9/11
Robin William's death
The first time I read about Covid. My heart sank.

I can tell you where I was for each one.

What about you?

I have very vague memories of the death of JFK, I do have memory of the funeral being on TV. All the others you mention after that, yes absolutely. Also the moon landing, Birmingham pub bombings, the murder of Earl Mountbatten, the.Bradford fire, Zeebrugge disaster and Hillsborough.

devildeepbluesea · 07/08/2021 21:31

Charles & Di
Live Aid (1985)
Kurt Cobain
Princess Di's death
Millennium
9/11
7/7 (was actually in London working, first an only time something actually affected me). Also the day before was the day they announced that the Olympics were coming to London.

9/11 I remember - was at school, my mum was at GP surgery for joint injections; GP , physio receptionist and mum just sat listening to the radio instead
7/7 I remember seeing news flash on computer
Very vaguely remember Dunblane - I remember the changes to security at my primary school
Remember Princess Diana’s funeral I think - not convinced
MJ dying - was at swimming pool and they played MJ nonstop
Millennium night - remember my mum spinning me around the room at midnight
Also Jill Dando - my mum sat watching TV in disbelief for hours

StillWeRise · 07/08/2021 21:43

Aberfan
moon landings (although strangely my memory doesn't match that of someone I thought was with me)
Thatcher being elected
Princess Diana dying
Mandela walking free
9/11
Dunblane- I remember very clearly going with DC in the buggy to a church run cafe, very shaken, and saying to the ladies serving there, i've just heard this terrible thing..and they said, oh no, you must be mistaken, that couldn't have happened.

Howshouldibehave · 07/08/2021 21:45

John Lennon being shot is an early memory.

PivotPivotPivottt · 07/08/2021 21:46

First thing I remember was Princess Diana dying I was only about 5 or 6. Its more my mum's reaction to it that I remember. Actually that reminds me I vaguely remember when Dunblane happened as well as my mum lit a candle and sat it at the window. I'm sure she done that on the anniversary for a few years after as well.
9/11
Queen Mother dying
7/7
Michael Jackson dying
Bataclan terror attack. I remember it was my daughter's 4th birthday and lying in the bath during a thunder storm reading about it on my phone.
Manchester terror attack. Happened a couple of weeks after I had given birth and I was pretty much a zombie so I didn't really understand what was going on. Same with Grenfell. I knew 2 terrible sad disasters had happened but I was too sleep deprived to follow the news so didn't get the full stories until a while after.

RosieLeaLovesTea · 07/08/2021 21:46

Yes princes Diana’s death - I was 19
And on holiday in Spain with a friend.

Also Milennium - a group of us went to Paris for a few days and stayed with some of our uni friends who were doing a placement there. A great experience although a I really only remember the NYE part and watching the fireworks by the Eiffel Tower.

Oh and 9/11. I was actually unwell from work on that day. My first full time proper job after graduating from Uni. I was at home with my parents and I remember watching all of the news coverage as it was being reported - watching in disbelief.
