Somewhat inspired by the 9/11 thread. You can probably estimate my age from this.

I remember:

The Cuban missile crisis
JFK assassination
Apollo 13
Princess Diana's wedding and her death
9/11
Robin William's death
The first time I read about Covid. My heart sank.

I can tell you where I was for each one.

What about you?

Cuba
JFK
Aberfan
Biafra
Ethiopia
Dunblane
Hungerford
9/11
Boxing Day tsunami
Princess Di

Cattenberg · 07/08/2021 21:59

Princess Diana’s death
Beslan school siege
Boxing Day tsunami
7/7 attacks in London
EU referendum result

I didn’t hear about 9/11 for a while, as I didn’t watch the news that day. When a colleague mentioned it the following day, I had no idea what she was talking about. I didn’t hear anyone else talking about it at work, either.

SingingInTheShithouse · 07/08/2021 21:59

Very vague memories of JFK, Aberfan, & Bloody Sunday

Marc Bolan
Elvis
John Lennon (I was in the pub next door to the Cavern Club, owned by his old friend, so that was a particularly weird one)
Princess Diana
Kings X fire
The London Bombings
9/11

LoveFall · 07/08/2021 21:59

You have reminded me about the moon landing and the Iraq war which was on TV in the boardroom of the firm I worked for.

SingingInTheShithouse · 07/08/2021 22:00

Oh yes, moon landing, Iraq war & Kurt Cobain for me too.

LoveFall · 07/08/2021 22:00

And Berlin Wall and Boxing Day tsunami. I was lying in bed when I heard about the tsunami.

OP posts:
Norugratsatall · 07/08/2021 22:03

And so many other, less high profile events

Herald of Free Enterprise disaster
Kings Cross fire etc

TulipVictory · 07/08/2021 22:04

Princess Diana's death
I remember being young and looking for a solar eclipse in the garden with cardboard glasses with funny coloured lenses in, I was young I have no idea what year this was
NYE into the new millenium
9/11
Manchester bombing (driving back from the airport following a holiday and it came on the radio)

careerchangeperhaps · 07/08/2021 22:06

Hillsborough disaster
Lockerbie disaster
Dunblane shootings
Princess Diana's death
9/11

Sakura7 · 07/08/2021 22:10

Berlin Wall (very vague memories)
Diana
Omagh bombing
9/11
7/7
Brexit vote
Trump winning US election

9/11 was the most shocking and I remember it so clearly. That evening I was working at my student job in an airport, there was such a horrible eerie atmosphere around the place. Americans who were due to fly home had their flights cancelled, many of them were just hanging around in a total daze. A lot of other passengers were clearly very nervous. It felt a bit surreal.

PatchworkElmer · 07/08/2021 22:13

9/11
7/7
Heath Ledger dying
Princess Diana dying

TSSDNCOP · 07/08/2021 22:13

There are some odd coincidences on this thread;
JFK died on my birthday 5 years earlier
It was my christening on the day of the moon landing
I had walked through Victoria Station about 30 minutes before a bomb went off
Margaret Thatcher resigned on my birthday
I was on a flight on 9/11
I was in Liverpool Street station on 7/7 when all the police radios went crazy and everyone started running
I was in Cyprus flying the night the Iraq war started, but closer to a major base than you'd want to be

waltzingparrot · 07/08/2021 22:14

I remember hearing the challenger space shuttle disaster on the radio.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 07/08/2021 22:14

The first one I remember was John Lennon when I was 12.

SunSeaSurfGin · 07/08/2021 22:25

Princess Diana's death - I was 4 or 5. Tv was black thought it was broken
9/11- I was 10
Boxing Day tsunami & the relief effort afterwards - it had already been a weird Christmas
7/7- it was sports day at school
Kate & Williams wedding - I was at uni went to a friends house had one to many tequilas
Most recently was Duke of Edinburgh's death - sat on a beach having a coffee when my phone newsfeed went mental.

louisvillelou · 07/08/2021 22:25

One of my main WWYW moment was Grenfell. I stayed awake hours refreshing the news and watching and praying in increasing horror.

The SARS outbreak, because my best friend at school was Chinese and she got such hostile treatment (even though she’d not been back home since it started, not that that should have made a difference!)

Spike Milligan's death is still a vivid memory for me. I was a mega-fan since my youngest days and I cried when I heard the news.

SunSeaSurfGin · 07/08/2021 22:26

Oh yeah the solar eclipse- it was rather cloudy didn't see much. Had a wash out of a bbq

memberofthewedding · 07/08/2021 22:32

Im 76 tomorrow so I look back on a long life with only three of these moments:-

Assassination of President Kennedy - I was in work and someone came rushing in.

Death of Princess Diana - I went to an early car boot fair and there was a crowd gathered around the stall of a guy who sold TVs

Nine eleven - I was in work and one of my students came rushing in

55378OO8 · 07/08/2021 22:36

Berlin wall falling was the first major news event I remember watching

Kurt Cobain's death - I was a young teen and cried

Labour getting elected in 1997 (?), it was such a hopeful moment in time

Princess di's death - the news didn't bother me much, I was a student and very hungover when I heard, but then went into work and a lot of colleagues and customers were very upset

9/11, I was on holiday at the time, I watched the news in a foreign language and it gradually dawned on me what happened

PPCD · 07/08/2021 22:36

Dunblane
Princess Diana's death
Columbine school shooting
9/11
7/7
London Olympics opening ceremony

ReviewingTheSituation · 07/08/2021 22:41

The Berlin wall... I was at school, and my German teacher (who was German) had been a nurse in the war, and had family in East Germany. The tears rolling down her face as we watched the TV footage in our German lesson... seeing the human impact was something very special.

OddBoots · 07/08/2021 22:47

The Utoya (Norwegian island) massacre

Chicchicchicchiclana · 07/08/2021 22:47

Death of Elvis Presley
Death of John Lennon
Death of John Smith
Death of Diana
Death of Queen Mum
9/11
Boxing day Tsunami
Death of David Bowie
Grenfell

Scarby9 · 07/08/2021 22:48

I remember where I was for:

First moon landing (woken and got out of bed by my dad to watch on TV)

The Munich Olympics massacre (at home with parents, watching TV)

The first news report of the Ethipian famine ('a famine of biblical proportions'. About to have special tea with my mum - trout - which neither of us could then eat).

Seoul Olympics Ben Johnson doping scandal (watched on TV with kids at school and had to shift from 'how fabulous a runne' to 'what a cheat' overnight)

Apollo 13 (again, watched with kids. All the excitement of the build-up, then the tension)

Challenger shuttle explosion (as above, but with a worse outcome)

Diana's wedding ( with a friend. Diana was our age and we watched in disbelief at someone like us marrying into that)

York Minster fire (walking through London with a friend from York. We saw the newspaper billboard and silently went to buy a paper)

Diana's death (camping in Wales. The news flew round the campsite)

Heysell disaster (watching with my SIL, waiting for my brother to come out of a meeting)

Diana's funeral (again with my SIL, after the weirdest week ever)

9/11 and 7/7 (posted about on the other thread)

Yorkshire Ripper conviction (he was a large part of my university experience in a Yorkshire city)

So many, mostly traumatic events.

CallMeNutribullet · 07/08/2021 22:50

I remember Hillsborough vividly even though I was only 9. Watching the news breaking and my mum being disgusted at the "hooliganism" which is how it was reported that day.

The Dunblane massacre. I was in high school and a teacher came in to break the news.

Diana's death - I was 17 and hungover in bed and my younger brother shouted it up to me.

9/11. Watched the 2nd plane hit as it happened in college on my lunch break. Our lecturer had family working on wall st and was very upset. She sent us home early
