Somewhat inspired by the 9/11 thread. You can probably estimate my age from this.

I remember:

The Cuban missile crisis
JFK assassination
Apollo 13
Princess Diana's wedding and her death
9/11
Robin William's death
The first time I read about Covid. My heart sank.

I can tell you where I was for each one.

What about you?

HarebrightCedarmoon · 07/08/2021 23:58

I remember where I was for Princess Diana's death and 9/11. Not a clue for the other two, I don't even remember when that was.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 08/08/2021 00:04

I remember 7/7 as I was heavily pregnant and overdue, and we lived in London. No idea exactly when Dunblane, Lockerbie, Hungerford, Hillsborough etc were, or even Bataclan or Manchester Arena more recently, though remember them in the news. The Herald of Free Enterprise sinking I can date fairly accurately as my lovely grandma died just afterwards.

17CherryTreeLane · 08/08/2021 00:11

I clearly remember where I was for:

Diana's death (driving home from a rave!)
Dunblane
911
7/7
Grenfelll

I vaguely remember Lockerbie and a few others mentioned.

Gingersay · 08/08/2021 00:12

Hillsborough- I vividly remember watching this with my Granpa and him being so upset.
Lockerbie
Dunblane - we live not far from Dunblane and I remember watching it on the news, when I came home from school.
Diana
9/11
The attempted terror attack at Glasgow Airport- these things just don't happen here!
The Clutha vaults helicopter crash
Covid stay home announcement
The Duke of Edinburgh death announcement

PizzaPiePizzaPie · 08/08/2021 00:19

Remember lots of these to add:
River Phoenix’s death
Berlin Wall coming down
John McCarthys release

DulciUke · 08/08/2021 00:25

John Lennon's murder
Princess Diana's death Sadly, I was cross and thought, "Dang, does the news have to go into a frenzy every time this woman has a fender bender?", only to realize that it was far worse than that.
9/11 I work on a New York State campus--lots of students frantically trying to call home that day
Tom Petty

CoastalWave · 08/08/2021 00:35

God loads

Zeebrugge
Dunblane
Princess Diana

Mammyloveswine · 08/08/2021 00:40

I can remember..

Dunblane..

tony Blair becoming pm...

Newcastle united throwing away a 12 point lead at the top of the premiership..(I was only young and football was my huge interest! I hope it doesn't sound superficial!)

Princess Diana dying

Jill dando getting shot

September 11th..

The Iraq war (and then Afghanistan)

The tories being voted back in (the year I could vote for the first time)

The London Underground bombings..(I'd been in London the year before, the same time, same station on a trip with my politics class and it gave me chills).

Brexit (was sat breastfeeding my baby and horrified...)

PizzaPiePizzaPie · 08/08/2021 00:50

Oh yeah. jill Dando big time.
Tony Blair became Pm the same week we won Eurovision. Was massively pissed that week.

Reloxa · 08/08/2021 10:35

@LadyCatStark

Same. I remember the others that have people have mentioned but not in that visceral, remember the moment I was told it was happening kind of way. 7/7 I was on the tube network at the time so obviously a different set of memories to being told about it.
thesnailandthewhale · 08/08/2021 14:47

Most of the above, also when they found Jamie Bulgers body and when the two girls from Soham went missing. Awful times :(

loopylindi · 08/08/2021 15:23

light bulb moments in my life. Why is it that for so many, (inc me) these involve death and disaster?
9/11 obviously
Grenfell
Pacific tsunami
Micheal Buerk's report on famine /Live aid concert (still brings me out in goosebumps) That event stopped me spending so much on food at Christmas for years. (for ever really!)
Royal weddings and the sense of optimism they bring
Diana's wedding, life and death. Her funeral (service esp)
Death of Elvis, John Lennon, JFK
1999/2000 where I was - enjoying stupendous firework display abroad
Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris/Windsor castle
Death of Lord Mountbatten
First walk on the moon/eclipse of 1999 - a bit of a washout here though. Too many clouds
Trump's election (regrettably) and him losing the election and the aftermath.
Finally of course - Covid - breaking news, lockdown and the sight of totally empty roads for weeks Like scenes from a dystopian film

loopylindi · 08/08/2021 15:24

oh..and the 2012 Olympics in London. A moment to be cheerful

LER83 · 08/08/2021 15:28

The only ones where I can actually remember exactly where I was/what I was doing are Princess Diana's death, 9/11, boxing day tsunami, and Michael Jackson's death. Obviously I remember other events, but not what I was doing at the time.

PolytheneRam · 08/08/2021 15:28

Diana's death

9/11

Milennium

7/7

Michael Jackson's death (not sure why!)

Geamhradh · 08/08/2021 15:30

Moon landing
Mountbatten assassination
Manchester IRA
Harrods bombing
Diana wedding/death/funeral
9/11
London bombings
Berlin Wall
Nelson Mandela release.

Various earthquakes due to where I live. I can remember various famous people dying but the only "where were you when" would be Diana. The Millennium was probably the biggest anticlimax of its namesake tbh.
