Do people use umbrellas these days?

Well, of course some do, I'm not that daft 😁. Just idle musing. My son just asked me where the umbrella was and I said we haven't got one. Then I thought I can't remember the last time I saw anyone using one.

I win dullest most pointless thread of the day of course, but it's either that or do my paperwork. 🤷‍♀️

You clearly don't live in the North then!
I own about 6 brollys. I'd hate to be without one...

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 06/08/2021 13:08

No, I don't. I'm in the peak park.

In the NE here, I have one permanently in my bag Grin

MedusasBadHairDay · 06/08/2021 13:12

I see loads of people using them, especially at school pick up and drop off. I wouldn't be without mine, I've got one of those that pops open at the press of a button.

cctvrec · 06/08/2021 13:12

Mine lives at the front door. (SW Scotland). I have a few but my favourite one is a Resident Evil merchandise "Umbrella Corp". umbrella.

Only one person ever recognised it but I did get a smile and finger guns. Grin

Hillbillyhotel · 06/08/2021 13:13

We’ve got about four and the only person in the house who uses one is my four year old DD who treats it as an accessory to her outfit. Too much faff trying to stop them flipping inside out.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 06/08/2021 13:13

Yes, how else do you stay dry when it's not coat with hood weather?

Is the peak park somewhere that it doesn't rain, I don't know where in the country that is

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 06/08/2021 13:13

SE here and i have an umbrella in the car and by the front door i use it all the time

Moonface123 · 06/08/2021 13:14

Yes, l walk to work, so l do need an umbrella at times.

DramaAlpaca · 06/08/2021 13:15

I'm in Ireland. I have an umbrella to hand at all times.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 06/08/2021 13:16

I'm in Norfolk and it rarely rains here, I think our umbrella is in the car but I tend to leave it in there and forget about it and then end up soaked though.

thenightsky · 06/08/2021 13:17

I always buy coats with hoods or carry a cagoule if it looks like rain. I like the idea of umbrellas, but have never found one that didn't need wrestling with when there's a breeze.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 06/08/2021 13:17

I used to live in Buxton in the peaks and frequently got soaked because it was often windy and the umbrellas just flipped inside out so I gave up and just wore a waterproof with the hood up.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/08/2021 13:23

Of you haven't got an umbrella how do you prod people out of the way in order to get on the bus first?

crochetandcoffeebreaks · 06/08/2021 13:23

I we moved from SE to NW at the start of last year and still haven't gotten around to buying any umbrellas 😂 both DH and I get cold hands very easily even with gloves on, so I'd rather go out with a massive coat with a hood, hands kept warm in my pockets than having to switch hands to hold an umbrella everytime one hand gets frozen over.

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 06/08/2021 13:24

I used mine yesterday for the first time in a while, it blew inside out, broke and ended up in the bin prompting a debate between myself and DP on the rest of the rain soaked walk home about whether I should buy a more expensive one that would last longer in future. It was from Wilko's Grin

MondayYogurt · 06/08/2021 13:29

My most ideal present is always an umbrella. Best cheap ones I've found are Uniqlo.

FlatteredFool · 06/08/2021 13:31

A what? Certainly not. We live in the north west and an umbrella would be akin to being viewed as not northern Grin

iklboo · 06/08/2021 13:33

I live in Manchester. Never use a brolly. I hate the things with an absolute passion. 'ood up & gerron with it' 😄

pinkcattydude · 06/08/2021 13:38

I have them by the front door and in the car I even have 2 umbrella stands (although one holds wrapping paper). I still miss my black sparkly one that broke. I think it’s having my hair done the. Waiting in the rain for a bus once that makes me obsessed with them.

Polmuggle · 06/08/2021 13:52

Where's the Peak Park?

Umbrellas pretty prolific in London!

penguinwithasuitcase · 06/08/2021 13:56

I've got a see-through one that's sort of bucket-shaped - it comes down much further than a normal umbrella so it doesn't fly inside-out.

You can't walk fully inside it the way I'd hoped (you'd need windscreen-wipers for that) but if you tilt it it almost feels quite cosy.

I live somewhere we rarely need them, but when it rains it POURS, so it's a real treat for me to get it out.

Gertie75 · 06/08/2021 13:57

I only use them on the school run because that's the only time I have to stand out in the rain.
If I'm waking the dog it's a faff to hold the lead and an umbrella so just use my hood and get wet.

penguinwithasuitcase · 06/08/2021 13:58

A DOME umbrella, it's called, apparently. Just looked it up. Highly recommend.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/08/2021 13:58

I have one small one in each handbag plus a spare in the car and a Liberty one for special occasionsSmile
