Do people use umbrellas these days?

Well, of course some do, I'm not that daft 😁. Just idle musing. My son just asked me where the umbrella was and I said we haven't got one. Then I thought I can't remember the last time I saw anyone using one.

I win dullest most pointless thread of the day of course, but it's either that or do my paperwork. 🤷‍♀️

I don't have one. I don't have enough hands. They're always full of toddlers, dog leads or work bags. Good rain coat 🧥

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 06/08/2021 15:22

My car comes with an umbrella that fits in a cubby hole in the drivers’ door. I usually have a coat or jacket with hood though.

herecomesthsun · 06/08/2021 15:23

The Prime Minister has one

Babdoc · 06/08/2021 15:25

I think there’s a telescopic one in the car somewhere, but I don’t use it.
I like to have my hands free, so I have a warm winter coat with a cosy waterproof hood, and a thin waterproof hooded summer jacket.
I don’t use handbags either, same reason, so all my coats have nice deep pockets. I won’t buy a coat unless I can fit my keys, phone, wallet and a tissue in it. I don’t need anything else.

36degrees · 06/08/2021 15:26

@iklboo that's my approach, too 🐝

Tiis · 06/08/2021 15:35

I don't use one or have one, I find them a faff, hate having to carry them afterwards and it's often very windy when it rains here and I cba battling an umbrella, I'd rather just wear a rain jacket or get wet.

PlasticEgg · 06/08/2021 15:43

@SirenSays that's really funny! Although maybe he really was being filmed and the last laugh is on you.

Bigtoejoe · 06/08/2021 15:46

Can agree if you live in Edinburgh, you will own an umbrella!

LubaLuca · 06/08/2021 15:49

God, yes. Today it was pouring down but too warm for a coat so I used my brolly.

I keep one in each car, I have one that fits in a bag and a couple of golf umbrellas as well. We're a family that hates getting wet.

Redshoeblueshoe · 06/08/2021 15:50

Another Mancunian here. I hate them.

MissCruellaDeVil · 06/08/2021 15:57

I have a few, I keep the main one in the car though, I figure I need it more when I'm out, and 9/10 times when I'm out I have the car! It's a bloody overpriced land rover umbrella and I wouldn't be without it.

Mochudubh · 06/08/2021 16:01

I think umbrellas are the work of the devil. Why would I want to walk about in the rain holding a stick above my head? That's what hoods or hats are for.

I'm relatively tall which means that I'm regularly poked in the eye
or scraped on head by shorter people with umbrellas. Don't get me started on people who leave them lying around open indoors (in offices etc) "to dry", it won't rot before you go out again and I don't want an injury from tripping over the bloody thing.

Throwntothewolves · 06/08/2021 16:02

Literally used one today, but only because it's too warm for my waterproof coat. Can't live in Scotland and not own a brolly

ExpressDelivery · 06/08/2021 16:05

I haven't used one since DS1 was born (20 years ago) and I could hold it at the same time as pushing a pram.

I go out in all weathers, always have a coat with a hood and a hairstyle that can't come to too much harm Grin

trappedsincesundaymorn · 06/08/2021 16:05

I've never owned or used one in my life. My mother on the other hand had 14 of the things.

Whenwhy · 06/08/2021 16:07

I live on the coast and no I don't use one very often. Mainly because with rain comes wind. My umbrellas last very little time.

Grellbunt · 06/08/2021 16:11

Disagree as Edinburgh is too windy for umbrellas
Marcee · 06/08/2021 16:14

NW here.

We might have one somewhere in the house. But I just always buy coats with hoods.

Umbrellas are too much faff. Having to carry it around
I've got enough to carry with 2 young kids. And the wind always blows it away, it goes inside out. Then it breaks.

Too much hassle.

RobinPenguins · 06/08/2021 16:16

I have one in my bag all the time. I walk and take public transport though, if you drive everywhere I can see why you wouldn’t really need one.

Datsandcogs · 06/08/2021 16:18

I have a lovely birdcage umbrella, it’s kept in the car. Sometimes I’d rather get slightly damp than use it, but if it’s pouring then it’s brilliant.

HiGunny · 06/08/2021 16:19

I used to always have an umbrella on the go but stopped using them when I had a baby as I couldn't hold one pushing a buggy. My youngest is now 7 but I still haven't gone back to umbrellas, I just buy coats with hoods instead. Maybe if I went back to commuting to an office wearing smart wool coats I'd dig them out again 😁

randomsabreuse · 06/08/2021 16:21

I do occasionally use one if by some miracle it's raining and not windy, but they're useless for horizontal rain and I have a wide variety of waterproof coats.

HeronLanyon · 06/08/2021 16:25

Yes I do ! Sept onwards have one with me whenever forecast is iffy.
I also spend a lot of time coastal where the rain is usually horizontal so don’t think I have ever used one there - either huge waterproof hooded coat or don’t go out.

pinkcattydude · 06/08/2021 16:28

Seriously why haven’t they invited a clip to hold an umbrella onto a buggy like they do with the baby parasol onesGrin

pinkcattydude · 06/08/2021 16:28

Invented not invited
