Do people use umbrellas these days?

Well, of course some do, I'm not that daft 😁. Just idle musing. My son just asked me where the umbrella was and I said we haven't got one. Then I thought I can't remember the last time I saw anyone using one.

I win dullest most pointless thread of the day of course, but it's either that or do my paperwork. 🤷‍♀️

I hate umbrellas there a pain to hold . The wind catches them. And they are a pain for people near by as well.

Mogloveseggs · 06/08/2021 16:37

Northerner here
Only time we use them is stood at sport training with the dc

Actually haven't for a few years - they often break due to high winds plus had quiet a few years not that long ago when hands were full of pushchairs, children's hands then later school bags.

I have a good winter coat - long warm and dry and that seems more flexiable - though the macs I have for warm wet weather have gone missing or don't have good hoods.

At the moment, I have two. One at home, one at work. And huge stock of waterproof clothing! But I don’t have a,car, and walk or cycle everywhere, so I need stuff for all weathers. Also have some ice spikes to fit on my walking boots in the snow, and walking poles!

FreeBritnee · 06/08/2021 16:56

I never owned one before I started the school run 🙄

Cheshirewife · 06/08/2021 17:05

I find umbrellas too annoying if I have bags. However, I absolutely love using a rain bonnet and never go anywhere without one, even though I’m still in my 30s!!!

HarrietSchulenberg · 06/08/2021 17:18

I hate umbrellas with a passion and would rather get drenched than use one. They just blow inside out then you have to dry them off, and other people poke you in the eyes with theirs.
Yuk. I just wear decent waterproof coats with hoods or accept getting wet.

StCharlotte · 06/08/2021 17:27

I have (and regularly use) one that lights up. I'm quite jealous of my colleague's umbrella that opens and closes at the touch of a button.

zukiecat · 06/08/2021 17:40

I can't be doing with an umbrella.

I haven't used one since DD1 was born in 1991, and it was too much bother to push her Pram and hold a brolly.

I just get wet Smile

MsSquiz · 06/08/2021 17:44

I have 2 hanging in the coat cupboard, 1 in DH's car & 1 in the basket under the pram.

I'm in NE England so it has been drilled into me from day dot to be prepared for rain on any day of the year!

TigsytheTiger · 06/08/2021 18:10

Highly recommend this one, doesn't blow inside out and gives good cover, needs a pair of windscreen wipers though!

I don’t like them so don’t use one and am now officially old as I have a rain hat which is awesome🤣 I look slightly ridiculous but it’s waxed so keeps the rain off and is so much better than a hood as you can see when you turn your head.

HundredMilesAnHour · 06/08/2021 19:01

Gosh, I use umbrellas all the time. Whenever I get chance!. I'm slightly addicted to them I think lol. It started during lockdown when I used to meet a friend for walks and we'd go out regardless of the weather. He had the most beautiful but sturdy (£200) umbrella - whereas my much cheaper one broke in the wind. So we'd both shelter under his but I was inspired to do some research on the best umbrellas (handmade, solid wood, Malacca handles etc) and now I have several stunning ones that I will use forever. I love them so much that I look forward to using them lol.

Remember those clear plastic ones for kids where they were like a bowl and you could rest them on your shoulders and still see?

Not only do I use an umbrella for rainy days, but I've recently bought a parasol for sunshine...

shinynewapple21 · 06/08/2021 19:28

I use umbrellas but only if I am going out or going to work . If I'm walking dog or going shopping I would just use waterproof jacket . And of course there are many times I would like to use umbrella but it's too windy .

JustMeAndWheatley · 06/08/2021 19:34

I used one today, and it is a clear one that you can see through.

Was very annoying having to carry it round all afternoon once the rain had stopped.

Onlinedilema · 06/08/2021 19:38

Yes I've got several.

RuthW · 06/08/2021 19:47

I have one in my handbag, one in the car, one in my partner's car and very small one to fit in my small going out handbag.

sanityisamyth · 06/08/2021 19:49

I don't think I've ever owned one, and I hate using one. I'd rather get wet! People seem to have no spacial awareness with them and either poke me in the eye, or cause a bloody river of rain and aim it at me as I was walking past!! Horrible bloody things.

Herja · 06/08/2021 19:51

I bought a relatively lightweight, really waterproof coat with an excellent hood. It is not beautiful, but you can literally chuck a bucket of water over it and stay dry. I hate umbrellas, just lose or break them.

NigellaSeed · 06/08/2021 19:53

I use a rain coat and a baseball hat. Way better

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/08/2021 20:05

@nigellseed
I read that as 'baseball BAT'!
And thought you must have been constructed your own umbrella out of the two! Blush

MindyStClaire · 06/08/2021 20:18

I think it's a lockdown thing - I know I'm more likely to use one on my commute in nicer clothes and makeup etc than at home in casual gear and a scruffy ponytail.
