Well you know they’re +1 or -1 away from being the same number, so from that you know that there’s only a difference of two between the original number of birds on each branch.

Sorry one more comment to help @NigellaSeed … you also know that a change of 1 makes one branch double that of the other I.e. an even number. So it must originally have had an odd number of birds. And cos the other branch is two less, that is an odd number too.

So odd numbers that are two difference.. work from 1 up.
