From the Sunday Times today, 😂

@makemeacake

Of course she has agency, that said, what I heard in the cafe was a man (her boss) being coercive and intimidating.

I know she has spoken of this, that's what made me connect the unnerving cafe experience and the time it happened with her revelation.

HmmmmmmInteresting · 01/08/2021 08:40

Second, I don't think it's relevant to discuss their age gap or BJ's age. Gordon Brown became a father for the first time over 50. Plenty of men have 2nd families in their 50s.

What's relevance got to do with anything? We're discussing a feckless deadbeat dad, not writing an English essay

merrymouse · 01/08/2021 08:51

Yes, there is an age gap. So what?

In this case the impression given is that if Carrie were a contemporary of Boris she would be less starry eyed about, as a pp said, ‘a deadbeat dad’.

medlenno · 01/08/2021 08:59

Carrie isn't starry eyed - she just wants a power position.

You must be reading some other thread.

Plenty of comments here are about his age (like he is the only men every to be father in his 50s.)

What the F has that got to do with an 'English essay'?

Oh do wake up.

PW has written about this many times. I suggest you google it and read what she said. I think the conception occurred in a taxi

She was a pretty switched on journo and I doubt she was bullied into doing anything she didn't want to.
You have NO idea what was being said or acted on, other than as another diner.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 01/08/2021 09:11
@JosephineDeBeauharnais You ae muddling things up. The point I made was the age of the fathers. Yes, there is an age gap. So what?

As for the 2nd point- well, it just shows how hypocritical some people are.

CJ speaks of being 'blessed' every other sentence, yet she clearly doesn't follow the rules of Catholicism.

Affair with a married man, pregnant out of wedlock, pregnant again for the when they married in a Catholic church.
You were trying to imply that Gordon Brown started a second family in his 50s with a much younger woman - equivalence. I see you.

Hemingwaycat · 01/08/2021 09:12

@Nettleskeins

At the same age as Boris (55) with grownup children I confess I find the whole idea of a complete new family (for him) incredibly odd. Like an impulse in his part, although clearly not on hers. She is driving this, nothing wrong with that if he is malleable enough to be sucked in and treats her well, but it is just.. odd. And I wonder if as the years go by he is increasingly like someone detached from the whole process or dare I say disassociating. There is obviously a traumatic association in his mind with family life . Children, siblings and mothers "good"...fathers...well, role model confused
Lots of men do this at a similar age. Other recent examples are Ewan McGregor and Jamie Redknapp. First long term marriage breaks down, children are adults/teenagers and they decide to procreate with someone at least 10 years younger, usually 20+ years. Suppose it’s because they don’t actually do much child rearing and their careers are unaffected.
medlenno · 01/08/2021 09:17

@makemeacake

I do have an idea. I was in there with my friend, the only other people downstairs were Boris and Petronella. She was distraught and he was shsshing her, then hissing at her, it was getting weird and threatending as he was hissing the same phrases about "having to" for example again and again. It got uncomfortable and she was getting more and more upset so we left.

He was her boss. Even as a streetsmart journo in her own right (who wrote extensively about it later but didn't write so much about the coercion I'd heard) he is still in a power position. I is also twice her size in body and personality.

If you don't think that has an impact maybe you need to wake up.

Insertdeadcatsnamehere · 01/08/2021 09:18

Some of the comments about miscarriage on this thread are awful. How many does a woman have to have before she's allowed to be upset? No wonder people don't feel like they can talk about it. So many people acting like it's a competition. "Attention seeking".FFS. Your struggles don't negate other peoples'.

medlenno · 01/08/2021 09:21

By the way, I am a journalist and because I'd been in the midst of this row I'd read her stuff with interest. I was also at Oxford just a little later that Boris and Petronella and had a position at the Union so my ears always pricked up when I read about them. Although not coeval , I'm friends with those who are.

So a patronising 'Google it' is a little off the mark.

merrymouse · 01/08/2021 09:43

Exactly, it’s not the same at all.

HmmmmmmInteresting · 01/08/2021 09:50

@MakemeaCake

You're not the thread police so you don't get to say what's relevant or not. If we want to talk about him being too old to be having a baby we can do

HmmmmmmInteresting · 01/08/2021 09:51

She was a pretty switched on journo and I doubt she was bullied into doing anything she didn't want to.

She doesn't sound that 'switched on' to me

HmmmmmmInteresting · 01/08/2021 09:52

She knows which way her bread is buttered. Hence the mad dash to get pregnant again so quickly

As i said, your assuming she actually did have a miscarriage.

Its not as if either them have any sort of relationship with the truth.

Miscarriage is incredibly common. It wasn’t talked about much in the past because it’s only relatively recently that women know they’re pregnant so early. Many of us who are older had miscarriages that we thought were late periods because it was impossible to get a test until you were about six weeks pregnant.

She can talk about her single miscarriage as much as she wants. It’s describing it as a “fertility struggle” that is tone deaf.

 • 'love children'- well, yes, carelessness by both parties involved.,

Really, you don't think it was accidentally on purpose om the gold digging, power grabbing, social climbingwomen's part?

It does seem weird that seemingly intelligent and 'switched on' women keep getting pregnant by this guy.
SoupDragon · 01/08/2021 10:14

It’s describing it as a “fertility struggle” that is tone deaf.

She didn't.

"Fertility issues can be really hard for many people, particularly when on platforms like Instagram it can look like everything is only ever going well.
"I found it a real comfort to hear from people who had also experienced loss so I hope that in some very small way sharing this might help others too."

SoupDragon · 01/08/2021 10:15

TBH, this thread is foul. Granted, Boris is a twat but there are two parents here.

OK. Describing it as a “fertility issue” is also tone deaf. My point stands.

Mr Johnson's attitude towards women in both his private and professional life is well evidenced.

I think it is unreasonable to compare a man who marries for the first time in his forties someone 12 years younger, with a man who has had children by at least three women and others have become pregnant by him.

And regardless of the circumstances of a pregnancy, I would hope we would all wish for a healthy baby to be born.
