Eating our 10-a-day thread

Breathmiller · 30/07/2021 10:37

I would like to try to start a project of getting my 10-a-day of fruit and veg in every day.

Anyone fancy joining me? I find groups on here of support so useful.

I know lentils and beans and chickpeas are part of it too so I will up them. I'm vegan so I'm hoping that should make things easier as I eat lentils as part of my diet anyway.

This thread is for everyone who would like to focus on 'eating the rainbow' as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Or anyone who does this already who has any hints and tips?

😂that was the issue here. I baked them in a bit of water while other stuff was cooking in the oven. I do the same with apples if they have sat out too long unclaimed.
Somehow everyone is happy to eat them softened and warm with a bit of yoghurt or custard.

KrispyKale · 16/12/2021 12:33

The cranberries came into it as I'd bought a frozen bag for sauce at Christmas. That's literally an orange juiced, sugar and cinnamon added to them and boiled up a bit.
Usually however DH forgets and buys a jar anyway!

Pleasenomoreglitter · 16/12/2021 18:56

I've been lurking on here a while and trying to up my intake. It was ok to begin with, but definitely room for improvement. Can I ask though, did anyone else find their digestion took a while to adjust to the increase? I keep getting bloated and uncomfortable when I try and have higher fruit and veg days. Did this happen for anyone else and did it resolve if you stuck with it? I'm hoping my body will adjust, but it does make for some uncomfortable days!

@Pleasenomoreglitter I haven’t been doing this that long but DH has commented on the increased gas levels!

Ive been reading Michael Greger‘a How. It To Die and he mentioned a study where they got people to eat 43 servings of veg a day and consequently recorded the biggest ever bowel movement in a medical study!

And on that lovely note, today I’ve had-

  1. Banana
  2. Orange juice
  3. Pepper
  4. Hummus
4.5 Cucumber and rocket 5.5 Satsumas 6.5 Green beans

And will probably have a bowl of grapes later so 7.5

KrispyKale · 16/12/2021 20:02

Today:
1 apple
2 carrot
3 black beans
4 Onion, broccolli
5 lettuce, tomatoes, peas
Not doing so great on variety here.

KrispyKale · 16/12/2021 20:02

Ate a lot of carrot and beans basically!

Welcome. I feel the opposite now. I suffer from IBS and it has definitely helped. It did take a little while to adjust to and figure out which ones work best.

Including dates, prunes, and prune juice definitely helped. I've been doing this from the start of the thread but only feel I'm really getting in to it with more ease now.

I'm eating much more veg in general and I'm not bloated very often and I'm starting to slowly lose weight without counting calories or feeling I'm restricting anything. I'm definitely much more likely to reach for a carrot and homemade houmous than unhealthy snacks.

And i still allow for treats at the weekend. I'm also not over eating the crap because I'm full of the good stuff which I think is good for bloating but mostly good for my mindset.

Another couple of pages and we'll be at the end of the thread. Is everyone up for continuing on? I'm loving the accountability it gives me.

  1. Dates
  2. Apple and mango juice & green juice (carrot, apple, spinach, kale, ginger)
  3. Corn on the cob
  4. Houmous
  5. Carrots
  6. Celery
  7. Kale
  8. Broccoli

@Breathmiller I definitely think we should continue!

@Pleasenomoreglitter I've been doing it for a couple of months and the bloating has eased but I can get quite gassy depending on what I've eaten. Yesterday I had alot of cruciferous veg, as well as dal, which nade me a little windy. So today I focused on fruit instead and I should hopefully be okay by tomorrow. I'm not too bothered about it though as I know it's helping. Like @Breathmiller I can really feel the health benefits - my thighs and butt are visibly smaller. Also, I've had abnormal BT readings for the best part of this year, so GP requested monthly tests. December result came back normal and I've put it down to my intermittent fasting, healthy eating and cutting out (most) junk. It's all worth it however much we manage!

  1. dates
  2. apple
  3. pomegranate
  4. banana
  5. 2 satsumas
  6. mixed nuts
  7. onions/tomatoes/garlic/ginger (base of chicken curry) 7.5) peppers (added into curry)

I always eat the same boring fruit! I really fancy some warm pears Grin

NMC2022 · 17/12/2021 16:30

That's funny, my mate just gets a card from her local takeaway!
I like gherkins but get indigestion with pickles if I'm not careful.

KrispyKale · 17/12/2021 19:41

Yes please for another thread. Had a very stressful busy week with no time and fruit and veg intake has predictably suffered. However, now off until after Christmas and I’ve started my morning with an orange & kiwi fruit salad.

Loved that salad photo - looked so good.

KrispyKale · 18/12/2021 10:11

Enjoy your Christmas break Wilderness.
I'm happy to continue as it gives me focus to keep on week on week out. (Even though I think I may have reached 800g a day about twice!) To me it's the more veg and variety

KrispyKale · 18/12/2021 10:11

More veg and variety thread 😂.

NMC2022 · 18/12/2021 13:27

Planning for today

Banana
Sultanas
Avocado
Tomatoes x 2
Gherkins Grin
Mango
Salad leaves
Sweetcorn

Meals are
Porridge with sultanas and banana
Sourdough with feta, avocado and tomatoes
Chicken salad with gherkins, tomatoes, salad leaves and sweetcorn
I struggle with other stuff to add to salad, any suggestions? Don't like beetroot or radishes
Better!

KrispyKale · 18/12/2021 13:52

Grated carrot or celeriac in winter?
I like something like spring onions or right now I'll add a shallot or two.
Sliced peppers.

KrispyKale · 18/12/2021 13:58

I've also long liked a lettuce and garden pea salad with dressing.

Breathmiller · 18/12/2021 19:20

Great, I'll set up a new thread at the end of this one.

NMC2022 what about grilled aubergine? I had frozen garlic sweet potato chunks on my salad a few weeks ago. It was really good to have something warm. Just remembered that I have another bag in the freezer.

  3. Tomato
  4. Cucumber
  5. Houmous

Yesterday was a washout beg and fruit wise. I can feel myself tip into holiday mode.

Must try harder to keep on track through Christmas.

My paltry offering for Yesterday...

  1. Tomatoes
  2. Green beans

Woops. Must try harder.

I've not been good past couple of days. On Saturday we went out to eat at a great new African inspired restaurant. I managed 2 f&v portions of hummus and salad...
Yesterday was a leek and potato soup kind of day. I had a small salad too, 2 portions worth. Today I woke up full of a cold and don't feel like eating anything. I have some leftover soup but no motivation to make my usual salad. Will see what DH chooses to make for tea tonight.
