Eating our 10-a-day thread

Breathmiller · 30/07/2021 10:37

I would like to try to start a project of getting my 10-a-day of fruit and veg in every day.

Anyone fancy joining me? I find groups on here of support so useful.

I know lentils and beans and chickpeas are part of it too so I will up them. I'm vegan so I'm hoping that should make things easier as I eat lentils as part of my diet anyway.

This thread is for everyone who would like to focus on 'eating the rainbow' as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Or anyone who does this already who has any hints and tips?

Loving the pics! I always plan to take one of my meals and then forget as usually juggling it with trying to keep crazy 13 month old alive.

Today I had:

  1. mixed salad - rocket/kale/lettuce/white cabbage
  2. half tomato/radishes
  3. sweetcorn
  4. spring onions
  5. cucumber
  6. leeks (leek and potato soup)
  7. carrot

No fruit today :( I've bought some dates @Breathmiller I always see them on your list and think that's an tasty snack or an easy portion I can add to my breakfast. Will start with them tomorrow!

@cantbereal DC definitely do pick up on it Smile my older 2 ask to take tuna or egg salads as part of their packed lunch. Middle DC now enjoys eating mushrooms. Older DC (year 7) told me most days he is the only one of his friends to take any fruit! He got teased a little at the start about his healthy packed lunch but wasn't bothered thankfully.

Yes, dates are great. I get the medjool ones from Tesco. Because I've been eating so much more veg and much less sweet stuff they seem so sweet and toffee-ish. Coffee, dates and a few nuts and seeds are a great breakfast. I've been having my half an avocado too as a first course with lemon juice and pumpkin seeds. Add in a small glass of fresh juice and that's 3 down for breakfast.

Although in the essence of honesty I am having carrorcake for breakfast this morning. 😆 we often have breakfast cake on a Saturday but I was working so as I have a day off today I am going to enjoy every bite.

Yesterday my lunch out was a bit disappointing as they have been bought over and gone downhill so not such a big plate of veg as they used to do. But...

  1. Houmuss
  2. Babaganoush (aubergine)
3.&
  1. Veg ratatouille thing
  2. Small side salad

Sorry to those that add gherkins to your list. They don't count because they usually have too much salt and/or sugar. I just checked so I could up my number today. Boooo

But having said that, the same article said olives weren't either for the same reasons. So, lets ignore that one 🤣🤣.

Also wondering if Christmas pudding counts? Saw 2 different opinions. Personally I think it's a bit of a stretch but if not then I am all up for getting my 10 a day in plum pud.

  1. Salad
  2. & 3 Spicy Chickpea & veg soup
  3. Mango
  4. Corn on the cob
  5. Avocado
  6. Grapes
(8. Christmas pudding Xmas Smile)

OtherPlans · 13/12/2021 19:16

Yes I'm not counting pickles of any kind (or I'd indulge constantly. Such a salt fiend).
Today 7
Hummus (always on the table: I have mixed European heritage)
Tomatoes
Carrots
Leeks
Green beans
Apple
Blueberries

TwentinQuarantino · 13/12/2021 19:49

I agree @Breathmiller Medjool dates are really tasty. Ajwa variety are a little pricey but also a great choice. I've bought the latter from Morrisons before but not seen them for a while.

Today:

  1. mixed salad leaves
  2. cucumber
  3. tomato/radishes
  4. sweetcorn/spring onion
  5. pepper 6 and 7) veg stir fry (carrot, onion, two types of cabbage)
  6. chana chaat (chick peas, cucumber, tomato, red onion in yogurt and masala)
  7. banana
riotlady · 13/12/2021 20:10

Hi, is it ok to join in? I’m really trying to up my fruit and veg intake atm

Today I’ve got

  1. Orange juice
  2. Cabbage and leek
3 and 4. Hummus, cucumber, roasted pepper and rocket
  1. Satsumas
  2. Pear
  3. Green beans
Wildernesstips · 13/12/2021 20:46

Absolutely Riotlady, do join us.

  1. Orange
  2. Roast beetroot
  3. Tomatoes
  4. Leeks
  5. Peppers
And a very small portion of rocket (homegrown to boot!).

So hard to know where to stand on the olives/gherkins debate. I get that they are salty but at least they look like the original thing. Personally I would vote for gherkins over tinned spaghetti which is also supposedly a portion😁. Everything in moderation?

I feel that Christmas pudding must count - there must be tonnes of dried fruit in that.

Breathmiller · 13/12/2021 21:03

Welcome riotlady

I don't always reach 10 and still have some very low count days but generally speaking I think I definitely eat more fruit and veg, particularly veg since the thread started. I always think if I at least make 5 I'm doing okay.

They're staying either way Grin
I get the crinkle cut sainsburys own brand and they taste like McDonald's ones. Weirdly I wasn't a giant salad fan until I started putting a few in and I don't know whether it's the gherkin or vinegar but it improves a salad very much!

Not a great day today, it's before my food shop so

Raspberries
Banana
Apple
Sweetcorn
Do baked beans count?

Wildernesstips · 14/12/2021 07:07

If they make you eat salad, they need to stay NMC 😀. Yes, baked beans count. Beans/pulses can count once if you’re doing 5 a day (but we think twice if doing 10).

KrispyKale · 14/12/2021 13:23

Glad to see others joining in! Welcome.🥬
I find this a useful thread as irl noone I'm around is remotely motivated to eat f and v!

I haven't posted in a bit but so far today I've had an apple and carrot sticks and have a beetroot salad lined up as a late lunch. 🍎🥕🥗

KrispyKale · 14/12/2021 13:24

NMC2022 · 15/12/2021 23:28

Oh that salad looks lovely
Shocking day today

Soup - 1 portion (was a veg/chickpea thing)
Banana
Pasta bake - counting as 1 (onion, sweetcorn, cherry tomatoes and passata)

riotlady · 16/12/2021 08:26

Yesterday I had

  1. Smoothie (banana, orange and frozen berries)
  2. Pepper
  3. Leeks
  4. Grapes
  5. Pumpkin and tomatoes
KrispyKale · 16/12/2021 10:35

Twentin I like that photo. I could manage to eat that salad even in winter when I'm not feeling much salad love.
Yesterday:
1 baked pears
2 onion - red and white
3 prunes
4 broccoli
5 Carrot
And potatoes which don't count. Darn it! Oh and a part portion of cranberries in with the baked pears.
Overall I ate by weight more than 5 as my portion sizes on both the pears plus cranberries and the broccoli were large.
So that's a positive I'm taking from it!

Breathmiller · 16/12/2021 12:01

Ooh, I've got to huge pears (now now) but they aren't ripening. I might poach them now that you've suggested that.
