Eating our 10-a-day thread

Breathmiller · 30/07/2021 10:37

I would like to try to start a project of getting my 10-a-day of fruit and veg in every day.

Anyone fancy joining me? I find groups on here of support so useful.

I know lentils and beans and chickpeas are part of it too so I will up them. I'm vegan so I'm hoping that should make things easier as I eat lentils as part of my diet anyway.

This thread is for everyone who would like to focus on 'eating the rainbow' as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Or anyone who does this already who has any hints and tips?

If having mushrooms on toast for breakfast, I usually just gently fry in a bit of butter until they are soft, then I don’t butter the toast. If having for lunch, I would probably add some garlic or chives too.

Wildernesstips · 09/11/2021 18:09

I am absolutely stuffed after a Nando’s lunch (took DS at uni out for lunch), so can’t face any dinner.

So…😊

  1. Orange juice
  2. Coleslaw and Beanie patty (at a push)!
TwentinQuarantino · 09/11/2021 18:33

@ladybranstonpickle great to see someone else on here that does intermittent fasting. What hours do you do? I've been doing the 18/6 and TRYING to build up to 20/4 but struggling. So I eat around 10am and main meal is at 4pm.

Today I had

  1. Mixed salad leaves
  2. Cucumber
  3. Cherry tomatoes
  4. Carrot/half a pepper
  5. Sweetcorn
  6. Peas
  7. Onion/garlic/ginger

I struggle to eat fruit in my eating window as I find it really filling, whereas veg I can throw in as part of my main meal or have a big salad lunch.

That sounds lovely, especially with garlic and chives. I'll give it a go, thanks

I dabble with intermittent fasting or at least having a small green juice for breakfast and I am trying really hard not to eat in the evening which used to be my downfall.

My problem is that 2 days a week I work late and cant get dinner til 9 when I get home. Sometimes throws me off a bit. But I do think it helps my IBS if I fast a little.

KrispyKale · 09/11/2021 19:37

1 apple, blueberries (from frozen)
2 satsuma
3 Carrot
4 tomato passata
5 onion, mushroom, celeriac, red kidney beans, spinach all in the tomato sauce!
6 roasted beetroot
7 olives, fresh cherry tomatoes

I'm counting both portions of tomatoes as one was cooked one was raw which give you different nutrition.😄

TwentinQuarantino · 09/11/2021 23:47

@Breathmiller yes! I have a friend with IBD and she told me fasting really helps her condition. I've a bit of dermatitis on my hands and strangely when I consistently fast and eat healthy it clears up. Fasting helps many ailments and I wish there was more awareness made of it by health professionals.
Perhaps you could treat those two days as cheat days and fast the rest of the week? Working late is a PITA.

I ended up devouring some leftover birthday cake (ruining my fast), but ate some fruit to feel less guilty so can add apple (8), banana (9), and strawberries (10) to my list.

@KrispyKale I like your logic Grin but I read somewhere tomatoes release cancer fighting oxidants when cooked so they definitely deserve a special mention!

ladybranstonpickle · 10/11/2021 09:36

@TwentinQuarantino I do 16:8 or more often 17:7, plus try to throw in a 22-24 hour one when I can, for example if my husband is out for dinner, so I can skip mine. I eat lunch 1230/1300ish and dinner at 7:30 or so most days. I don't snack in between.

Yesterday's F&V count, definitely 10 portions but only 6 types.

  1. Red onion
  2. Yellow pepper
  3. Cucumber
  4. Potato (not sure this counts)
  5. Baby Spinach
  6. Peas

I felt a bit fed up this week with the toddler/work/home grind, so took myself out this morning for a cappuccino and a croissant after the nursery run. Opened my eating window really early, but once in a while I think its worth it. I drank my coffee in peace and read my book for 20 mins.

Wildernesstips · 10/11/2021 21:11

Yesterday I ate a satsuma and a pear after posting 😄.

Anyway

  1. Orange juice
  2. & 3. Summer squash soup
  3. Pear
  4. Leeks
  5. Cannellini beans
6.5 Roast parsnips
TwentinQuarantino · 10/11/2021 22:24

Today I had:

1 and 2. Mixed salad (carrot, pepper, sweetcorn, rocket, lettuce, cucumber but was a rather small portion so will only count as 2).

  1. Satsuma
  2. Banana
  3. Apple

Not a great day, I feel like I could've had more. Feeling peckish now so will snack on some nuts (if DH hasn't finished them all). I agree @ladybranstonpickle sometimes it's fine to open the eating window for our general wellbeing. I know if I don't eat something now I will struggle to sleep so sod the fast Grin

Breathmiller · 10/11/2021 22:46
  1. Tomatoes - 2 kinds
  2. Cauliflower
  3. Broccoli
  4. Carrots
  5. Leeks
  6. Sweetcorn
  7. Mushrooms
  8. Onion
  9. Kidney Beans
10. Aubergine Half portion cherries

Not sure everything was quite a full portion today but pretty close.

I am sticking to just not having breakfast and eating dinner at around 6ish or 9 on a late work day.
My digestion has always worked best without breakfast actually.

Morning all, had a lovely evening and morning today - the toddler went for her weekly sleepover at my in-laws, and they even picked her up last night. My husband and I took the opportunity to go out for dinner, so a lot of food but at least it came with a salad!

Yesterday (yes I had the same lunch two days in a row!):

  1. Potato
  2. Yellow pepper
  3. Tomato
  4. Cucumber
  5. Red onion
  6. Lettuce
  7. Chilli pepper
  8. Aubergine

I can see that I need more fruit in my life!

Breathmiller · 11/11/2021 21:33

Ladybranston glad you had a lovely time.

Today I have had...

  1. Tomatoes
  2. Melon
  3. Grapes
  4. Beans
  5. Red pepper
  6. Mushroom
  7. Raisins
Onions (half portion

Had a sausage and bean casserole. Or posh beans as we call it. It was so good

OP posts:
ladybranstonpickle · 12/11/2021 10:23

Yesterday's count:

  1. Cucumber
  2. Tomato
  3. Red onion
  4. Peppers
  5. White onion
  6. Potato
  7. Satsuma

Could do better...need to go back to having carrot batons with my sandwich and I really need to eat more fruit.

TwentinQuarantino · 12/11/2021 14:46

@ladybranstonpickle I think sweet potato counts as one of 10 a day but not regular potato? Happy to be corrected!

Today I've had:

  1. Mixed salad leaves
  2. Cucumber
  3. Cherry tomatoes
  4. sweetcorn/half a pepper

For tonight it's a mixed veg curry so I'll be having

  1. Carrots
  2. Yellow/green peppers
  3. Mushrooms/Turnip
  4. Peas
  5. White onion/garlic/ginger

Forgot to buy the spinach for the curry (doh!)

Will also try and have a couple of pieces of fruit.

Breathmiller · 12/11/2021 17:44

Yes, sweet potato counts but not potato.

Aalsoany amount of juice regardless of the different ingredients is only 1.

OP posts:
TwentinQuarantino · 13/11/2021 23:29

Today I managed:

  1. mixed salad leaves with extra rocket
  2. sweetcorn/beetroot
  3. cucumber
  4. tomatoes
  5. broccoli
  6. cauliflower
  7. carrot/peas
  8. baked beans

Zero fruit :( I've realised my lunch salad is getting very boring and need to switch it up with different veg. I'm very fussy though and dislike olives, avocados, and a whole list of other things which limits what I can choose. My water intake is also quite low which is problematic as a recent bloodtest showed abnormal GFR results for the kidneys. So that's something I hope to focus on also.

KrispyKale · 14/11/2021 11:33

Would soup be a good option to up both fluid and vegetable intake that way?
I started my autumn soup making in earnest this week and had a huge tank of the stuff in the fridge for dinner and lunch this weekend.

Wildernesstips · 14/11/2021 12:14

Twentin what about adding some roast veg to your salads? I usually cook them alongside my dinner then add them cold to the salad the next day. I had completely forgotten about turnips until you mentioned them.

Yesterday

  1. Cooked tomatoes on toast
  2. Apple & ginger juice
  3. Baked beans on toast (seem to eat a lot of “on toast”)
  4. Pear
  5. Broccoli
  6. Sweetcorn
TwentinQuarantino · 14/11/2021 12:37

@KrispyKale I love soup in the wintry months. I'm quite lazy about making it though but will try and make more of an effort. DM dropped off chicken soup (with carrots) and bone broth for me recently when I was unwell and that was amazing. I repeat BT in 4 weeks so hopefully the increased liquids will help give a normal reading.

@Wildernesstips roast veg is lovely and a great idea. And I could switch up my salads with a stir fry on the days I'm home. It's my birthday today so cheat day Grin

Wildernesstips · 14/11/2021 20:35

Happy birthday @TwentinQuarantino!

  1. Baked beans
2 & 3. Ribollita (contained tomatoes, cannellini beans & kale) - a lovely filling but low calorie lunch
  1. Carrots
  2. Peas
  3. Brussel sprouts
Breathmiller · 15/11/2021 08:40

Happy birthday for yesterday twentinQuarantino

I also had a bit of a weekend off. Partially being busy and out of the house and partly just having a bit of a blow out of unhealthier things after a couple of manic weeks. Funny how I still see "treating myself" to sugary crap that makes me feel rubbish a treat. I don't drink but I properly had a sugar hangover on Saturday. Hey ho. It happens much less than it used to, partly because of this thread keeping me on the straight and narrow.

Still managed some healthy things in amongst the rubbish.

Peaches
Houmous
Carrot sticks
Olives
Tomatoes
Coleslaw with cabbage
Peppers
Spinach soup

But not sure what else.

Back on track today.

OP posts:
ladybranstonpickle · 15/11/2021 17:00

Didn't count over the weekend but it wasn't terrible!

Today:

  1. Cucumber
  2. Sugar Snaps
  3. Tomato
  4. Cabbage
  5. Celeraic
  6. Berries

10 portions but again, not enough variety...

TwentinQuarantino · 15/11/2021 22:20

Thank you for the well wishes. I had a fab meal at a nice Indian restaurant but ate far too much and had a poorly tummy last night. I'd like to think it's my body rejecting all the excess meat and fried foods I put into it. So, happy to be back on the veg today.

Banana
Innocent tropical juice
Mixed lettuce with extra kale
Red cabbage
Sweetcorn
Cucumber
Radishes/cherry tomatoes/1 jumbo spring onion
Broccoli/cauliflower
Carrots/peas
Brussel sprouts
Sweet potato

@Breathmiller I feel we are conditioned into thinking junk food brings us comfort and happiness, hence we need a treat/reward. When baby goes to sleep after an exhausting day all I want to do is curl up infront of Netflix and binge on chocolate etc. That's 'me' time and I told myself I deserve it. But now with intermittent fasting the cravings have thankfully stopped.

Wildernesstips · 16/11/2021 06:40
  1. & 2. Ribollita again (cannellini, kale, tomatoes)
  2. Apple
  3. Sweet potato mash
  4. & 6. Steam bag of veg (broccoli, green beans, broad beans, peas)
and probably a half portion of veg (peppers, carrots, onions) in my sausage casserole.
