How to sleep comfortably at night when camping?

Newchallenge · 29/07/2021 13:08

Inspired by previous threads - I like camping, we are camping for a whole week this year Shock

How am I going to sleep - 2 nights nearly broke me! What camping equipment should I get?

Currently using selection of roll mats, quilts and a self inflating (tiny) air mattress. I still hurt my hips lying on my side!

Zopiclone! ShockGrin not what I was expecting!

Noooo I am sure there must be a magic mattress or something (yes I am the gullible fool that bought one from a Facebook and; yes it rustles and is crap)

Plenty of red wine at night ensures I sleep like a drunken baby GrinWine

This is what's known in the game as a liquid roll mat

Where from?! Will doctors just prescribe?
ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 29/07/2021 13:21

A caravan

ReviewingTheSituation · 29/07/2021 13:22

Eye mask
Airbed (with blanket underneath for insulation)
Sheet, duvet (thin), blankets - so you can layer accordingly
Warm socks
Hot water bottle

Making sure you don't go to bed cold is key. Once that box is ticked, I have no problem sleeping in a tent.

sandycloud · 29/07/2021 13:22

Yep. Lots of red wine. Plus I put my pjs on under my clothes so I don't have to put them on cold and damp.

kittykarate · 29/07/2021 13:23

Booze. That seems to be the only answer. Though I keep toying with those 10cm thick self inflating mattresses www.vango.co.uk/gb/sleeping/424-comfort-10-single.html , as I'm ok on a standard self inflating one for a night or so, but could do with more comfort for longer holidays.

Never share a double air mattress, it's like sleeping on a bouncy castle.

rosesandsalvias · 29/07/2021 13:24

Camp bed, at least 5cm SIM on top, sleeping bag.

Hotdogsforsale · 29/07/2021 13:25

I have these with the 6.5cm Decathlon SIM on top, and sleep really well www.decathlon.co.uk/p/inflatable-camping-bed-base-camp-bed-air-70-cm-1-person/_/R-p-309887?mc=8595949&c=BEIGE

Out of stock right now but they come in and out regularly. They're recommended a lot on FB camping groups and much better than anything I've had before..

Sooverthemill · 29/07/2021 13:26

I wear thermals to bed when camping in UK. I take my proper duvet and use sheets and a blanket on top of air mattress. I also use a hot water bottle. In France I need none of this

RedToothBrush · 29/07/2021 13:27

A charged phone and details of a nearby b&b you can book in emergency.

OohMrDarcy · 29/07/2021 13:27

Best night's sleep I ever had camping was after a(nother) airbed collapsed. I ended up moving to a reclining sun lounger chair thing, with my duvet folded in half so it was under and over me.... Reclined it back and soundo....bliss

RedToothBrush · 29/07/2021 13:27

No i am not joking.

Pedallleur · 29/07/2021 13:28

As others have said, a caravan preferably a large static one as big as you can afford.

fantastaballs · 29/07/2021 13:29

Op, what you need is a fishing bed. 6 leg is ok, 8 is better. If you can afford it for the memory foam xl ones. The pic I've posted is a starter/mid level one. They are AMAZING!! Add a tent with black out bedrooms, ear plugs, a eye mask and it's the best nights sleep you will ever have.

ISeeTheLight · 29/07/2021 13:30

I have a problem with my back. We go camping but I invested in a vango shangri-la double self inflating mattress. It's not cheap but it's AMAZING. Feels like sleeping on a proper bed. Highly recommend.
I also take my own pillow.

Newchallenge · 29/07/2021 13:30

Couple of airbed suggestions upthread - airbed rather than camp bed?

@Hotdogsforsale that's interesting - how do you stop the SIM on top from moving around? I have visions of waking up entangled!

OP posts:
Newchallenge · 29/07/2021 13:31

@fantastaballs that does look comfy!

OP posts:
Newchallenge · 29/07/2021 13:34

@ISeeTheLight that was the kind of review I was looking for!

It's expensive though... Arggh camping is supposed to be a cheap holiday! But a good night's sleep - invaluable.

OP posts:
ISeeTheLight · 29/07/2021 13:37

@Newchallenge yes it's not cheap... but then I saw it as an investment over the long term - we also bought an inflatable tent that hopefully we can use for many years to come. And I just can't risk it with my back - we did it with a normal air mattress for a weekend once and I told DP if he wanted to go camping again it was with the caveat that we'd get a very decent mattress. I was in so much pain from the other one, xoudnt go through that again.

Newchallenge · 29/07/2021 13:42

True - every time we go camping we get an extra bit of kit!
